They'll give us a talking to-
Characters: Nick and Alex
Setting: The Cocoon
Content: Nick Fucking Fury
Summary: Despite the horror of the zombie apocalypse, Nick still finds time to acknowledge his favorite kidnapped god's birthday
Topside was nothing short of hell and it was almost a relief for Nick to get below street level, down into the depths of the Cocoon. The silence here was unnerving, knowing that half his old caterpillars were out in the world somewhere, beyond his reach or help. For half a second her thought of her, but banished it from his thoughts. Kids or not, they were still warriors. They'd manage on their own just fine. At the moment he just had one kid to worry about.
He'd checked in now and then and when things were looking pretty grim told Alex to stay below, he'd let him know if he needed him. There wasn't much Fury could do to keep Wicked holed up, so he wasn't surprised to find her here or gone whenever he stopped in. He just hoped she kept herself alive, but that was really all he could hope for anyone with bodies rising from the dead and sick motherfuckers taking bites out of everyone.
It was worse than New Orleans had been. Even the evacuation of the city the week before hadn't helped much, too little too late. S.H.I.E.L.D. was pretty locked down, though they'd lost the Raft (big fucking surprise) and communications were already getting shaky with outposts the world over. Hell, it was a miracle now if they could even get through to Chicago or L.A. Not unexpected since fewer people alive to run shit meant less of it to use, just inconvenient. Everyone was on their own, whether they knew it yet or not, whether they were still holding onto hope. Fury'd figured that out already, accepted it, moved on. There was really no other way to survive and he had back up plans and places like the Cocoon to retreat to if he had to. He wasn't as worried for himself as he ought to have been, maybe, because he'd expected some kind of shit to go down for months and probably this was that shit. Paranoia could pay off. It'd kept him alive so far and Alex, too, so long as the kid listened and stayed put. Nick was about to find out whether he had, anyway.
