Mission 011

The latest body was found in the deep, cold and dark waters in the shadow of the Basilica di San Marco. The sun shone brightly on the plazza, where the tourists gathered and marveled at the sights, squinting up at the glittering domes and going quiet with awe as the bells began to ring and their song echoed down the narrow canals and along the water's surface. Behind the church, away from the stunning sights, the sound of the calling bells halted the investigation, sounding less like a celebration than an ominous warning, thundering oppressively down on the detectives and making the yellow tape that cordoned off their crime scene shiver. The body had been pulled from the water and laid on the cool stone walkway to be carefully examined before the coroner took her away, but the cause of death that was suspected when the police station had first received the call was obvious at first glance; even bloated and blue-white, the puncture marks down her heavy limbs and up her neck were obvious, entrancingly dark points like the emphatic end of a sentence. Her skin hung loose, beginning to settle even as she sat on the pavement awaiting transport, like thin silk.
Two detectives stood by her, one crouched to count the wounds he could see without disturbing her, and the other standing behind him and peering up towards the sky and the source of the bells. The Basilica that towered over them was thick and solid and laid with gold, from its heart to its great walls, looking imposing and eternal. Inside the doors, a guard watched suspiciously, not trusting this group inside the church without a chaperon, but they weren't so interested in the inside. This wasn't the first of the murders, and none of the other bodies had been discovered anywhere nearby; they dotted the city without discernible pattern or purpose. Above, the walls curved out as balconies, covered in the same delicate golds and elaborate mosaics as the domes, where another man watched, intent on the investigation below with a furrowed brow, flanked by more of the bronze horses that watched over the church's doors.
