Work had always come first for Maes. Even when he'd been at home, he was always at Central, trying to finish up his work or he was out investigating a case. Test City proved to be no different in regards to that. Maes spent much of his time at the precinct, going over paperwork - which he loathed - and bothering his co-workers. It had nothing to do with the fact that he was sharing a space with a woman that was not his wife, they had separate bedrooms, but it was the fact that he was, at his core, a workaholic.
Gracia had never commented on that fact except for right before their daughter was born. Maes had done all that he could to spend as much time with them as possible. Sometimes were easier than others, but with the State Alchemist killings, and the search for Scar he'd not been home that often.
Maes regretted that now, but there was little he could do to fix things.
He'd taken the day off, done a bit of shopping and then returned back to the apartment. He wasn't that great of a cook, but he could make do and so he started making something simple. It didn't take a genius to fry chicken, mash potatoes or boil a can of green beans. Maes was just putting the the meal on the table when he heard the door to the apartment open. "Yo!" He greeted Claire with a bright smile, and wave of his hand.
"I know we haven't gotten to talk much since being thrown in here together, so I figured we could have some dinner and do that if you'd like." Maes wouldn't be offended if she didn't want to sit down to eat with him, or talk to him for that matter. He knew that he wasn't everyone's cup of tea, and it suited him just fine.
