Week 38: Toon Town | Day 2
Well, this is certainly interesting. (Of course, being a horse was also interesting.) It's nice being able to see the sun as a human. I must say, the jacket is not a bad touch. At least the rest of the clothes aren't too bad.

The Terminal Station Bar reminds me of some of the dives we'd go to in San Francisco when we were cadets.

Since we're in Southern California, I was thinking of taking a trip out to the Mojave. It's only a few hours drive and I thought it might be nice to get out of the city for a day or two. (And I confess, I want to see what the stars out there look like in this time. I asked around and there's a handful of motels out there if folks aren't interested in sleeping under the stars. Anyone interested?

Bucky

I believe I owe you a drink. Or at least, I promised drinks and stories. Still up for it?

Yelena
I'm glad you're better. (Is that the right word?) Hopefully it wasn't too painful.

I've been looking for a place to ride out to, so count me in.

Excellent. Probably not a lot of buildings out there, but the bartender was telling me that there's a fair amount of mines.

If I remember my history right, I doubt I'll get much in the way of the buildings I want out this way. Besides, this is more of a 'let me stretch my motorcycle legs' sort of thing. I'm not going to look a gift Derleth in the mouth and I'm taking advantage of this bike as much as I can.

And ha, I'm going to pass on the mines. I got enough of those in the fantasy world.

Well, there is a lot of open space in this decade still I think. Especially out in the desert.

Fantasy world?

I would never have thought it would be such a relief to merely be human.

Are you continuing rehearsals while we're here?

Puppy me was pretty damn cute, but I appreciate not having to worry about whether or not I'm eating shoes.

Definitely, yes, we'll probably try to do things in the afternoon every other day or so. This place seems pretty stable, but I don't want to keep people from enjoying the setting either.

... how many shoes did you eat?

Would it be weird if I sat in on a rehearsal?

Thankfully I think only one. Eliot magiced his, and I was with him quite a bit.

Not at all. It's good to have someone in the audience. Just standard, quiet and not disruptive, applies.

Brilliant - you're both hired. And I think we're going to take advantage of this week to go with my mid-century 1940s post-world war II thought, and so I'm planning on meeting with Steve to go over our scenes and what we might need for props and costumes. You want to join us?

Sure thing. I'm game. I'm probably better with props and set construction than costumes. Or feeding the cast. I'd be good at that.

I wouldn't mind taking a trip out to the desert.

Which branch of the military did you serve?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]uncagedcaptain

Not the military, though we did have combat training. Starfleet - a peaceful organization for space exploration.

I was the captain of a starship, and a test pilot when I was younger, so maybe the universe thought the closest thing here was a fighter pilot.

I don't think we've met yet. I'm Chris.

Better, alive. It's weird they mean the same thing right now. I'm glad you're not a horse. [...] This place is making me say things I never thought I would say almost every single day.

There's an observatory up on one of the hills if you're wanting to look at stars. You probably knew that. And I bet you that there's a toon out there somewhere who has a spaceship, but maybe it's not so safe to use unless you're one too. Probably should stick to the trip to the desert, huh?

Alive is preferable. Although it depends what we consider living- I'm glad you're alive and not much worse for wear.

I think I saw something about the observatory. I think it's in the park with the zoo and the horseback rides? I hadn't considered a cartoon spaceship... that might be... difficult? I don't think I'd fit in a cartoon spaceship for one.

Desert seems safer. At least I know how to deal with the things that want to kill me there.

Me too. Now let's both of us stay that way, okay?

I think you're right. Could be an interesting afternoon, but I don't really know what they have there right now. Telescopes, I guess? Who can say, I just know I saw it on the hill when I was exploring yesterday. And I think a cartoon spaceship could be as big as they wanted it to be? But still, risky. Maybe just stick to looking up this week.

Do things want to kill you in the city right now?!

Deal. From what I know of my future, I still have a few years.

Certainly a lot to explore here. Have you found any interesting places this week?

Not that I know of? I just meant, well, the desert has scorpions and rattlesnakes, but I grew up with those things so they don't bother me much.

For what it might or might not be worth, I think time works different here. My sister says I have come and gone a few times already, but I don't remember any of it. So if it's the same me and not some kind of alternate universe me, then the time here doesn't even count in normal time. I haven't thought about it a lot yet, this kind of science isn't the thing my brain likes.

Some, but so far it's mostly clubs and bars and restaurants. I know I want to go to the beach sometime, but other than that I need to take a day to really explore if I can. What have you found, anything good?

Oh, that... right, that makes sense. I don't trust anything about this place after what it did to me last week. So maybe staying out as much as we can isn't the worst idea.

I don't know if that's better or worse? I don't hate pressing pause on my timeline back home, but it's somewhat disorienting to know we could spend a year here and nothing back home.

What does your brain like?

Oh, the ocean... that would be fun. How do you feel about surfing? Mostly just bars and this nice little bakery. But planning to take a field trip into the desert and maybe the mountains later this week. Interested?

Yeeeeeah, I try not to think much about it because being here at all is enough for me. If I end up back where I came from I guess I deal with it then. If we even remember being here? I kind of haven't asked about that part. Maybe nobody knows.

Not science. I mean I do like knowing things, but I let the people smarter than I am figure out how it all works and they can tell me the pieces I need to know. Other than that, I think I'm still figuring out what my brain likes. I haven't had a lot of time to find out yet.

I feel like I've never been surfing but it could be fun? Do you know how? And I might have to see about the field trip. This place is crazy but I think sometimes we end up in a place I want to have more time because there's too much to do and only seven days for doing it.

Well, at least you have some time here to figure out what you like.

I know how, but I wouldn't say I'm particularly good at it. I'd be happy to teach you what I know.

I'll probably go towards the end of the week. And you're more than welcome to come along. There should be some hiking and star gazing and maybe horseback riding if I can manage to arrange it.

It seems like it's one of the perks of being here. It's weird otherwise, not having anything I should be doing. I'm not so used to not having a mission.

You don't have to be good, and if we don't get a chance this week then I take you up on it next time there's a chance for surfing. If I learn a little, you get better, and we keep each other from drowning? Success.

It sounds like it could be fun. And s'mores, I always wanted a s'more. I only have one thing I really have plans to be doing, so I should be able to come!

I can understand that. I'm not very good at time off from Starfleet. It's easier when I have a mission. Something to focus on.

Sounds like a plan. I apologize in advance for any saltwater you might swallow.

S'mores are divine. Especially if you perfectly roast the marshmallow.

Yeah, exactly this. I don't know what to do when I'm not focused because it seems like there's too much to choose from. I guess I should get used to it.

I think if I swallow salt water it's my fault for falling with my mouth open, so I can only blame me. But maybe remind me one time not to yell when I fall, that could help.

Well now I have to come.

I'd forgotten about that. Did you make it out to Los Angeles in your time? I'm familiar with the area a bit, but a few hundred years in the future.

If there's a spot you want to check out or if you have any recommendations, I'm up for just about anything.

(The toons thing is... new. And takes some getting used to.)

No, never made it out to the west coast, but a guy in my squad was from Fresno. We all made plans to visit each other after the war, but... I hope they all kept in touch.

That definitely takes getting used to. I'll see what the good spots are and get back to you.

I'm getting a feeling that's a part of your story that's best told over drinks.

Sounds good. I was at Tom Bergin's pub the other night - felt like an Irish pub. Are the dark corner sort or the fancy white tablecloth sort?
