empire city: day seven, an ic/ooc event

IT'S A HEIST
THE TARGET
One Loki Laufeyson, god trapped on the wrong side of the material plane. It would be madness to release the architect of the Battle of Empire City, but who better to answer questions about the gods?

...Probably quite a few people, actually.
THE LOCATION
None other than DSS Headquarters, a highly secured facility in Empire City. The only place that could safely contain The God of Mischief. The DSS deals with aliens, magic and the supernatural. You'd have to be out of your mind to want to steal something from them...
THE THIEVES
A small group of scrappy hedgewitches. Is this a bad idea? Yes. Will it likely go wrong? Also yes. Are they doing it anyway? Of course.

Lucky for them there might be members of the DSS who have at least a passive interest in letting the Asgardian trickster go free...

The terms were fair. That had always struck him as funny about Julia. Not funny ha ha but funny curious. She wandered about most of the time he'd known her with a piece of her soul missing. Like a ghost. A shadow of herself, more prone to the darkness than the light. And yet she'd always been fair. Loki often wondered if, under the same circumstances, he would be as candid and impartial. He didn't think so.

In fact, Loki was quite certain that if he had ever found himself in Julia's shoes, he would have been a terror.

He gave a dramatic sigh when she passed the contract through the slot. He snatched it up, gave her a sidelong glance, and then read through it again. More carefully this time. More than just a fleeting passover. Then he used the sharp edge of the paper to cut his finger. It was just a sliver sliced through the flesh. He had to pinch the skin together in order to make it bleed. Then he pressed it to the paper. A smeary red print left in its place.

Then back through the slot it went.

"I've missed these little moments between us, Julia. We really should do this more often."

Julia took the word as bond and waited. She couldn't get him out until Ben finished his part. There was an indicator light on the cell letting her know the magical warding was still in place. She stared at it, waiting for it to go out in silence.

Julia was so stubborn, so unwilling to remember her life before this week, which only made her so determined to make nearly all the same mistakes. Perhaps if she had not been so stubborn, she would have been willing to ask Loki more questions.

Come on, Ben. What was the hold up?

The light went out. Julia didn't waste time casting what was a comically basic spell, all things considered, to unlock what was otherwise a very powerful prison cell. The locking mechanisms clicked open and the cell door released.

"Your turn. Where can I find Idunn?"

The hold up is that a DSS agent decided that this was the moment to casually wander out of his office, apparently, and Ben is stuck hiding behind a trashcan with what he hopes is a convincing chamelion spell muttering curses in his head. As soon as Mr Blue Suit and a Doughnut has left the hall, Ben tried again, muttering something about it never just being simple, before he brought down the magical warding again.

What, like it's hard?

Well, you know, once Mr Blue Suit and A Doughnut is gone.

He'll move to clear the exit path for Julia and Loki next.

Patient, Loki was not. And yet, he stood there, waiting. Just as he'd spent the last ten years waiting. It was annoying, however, how desperately long those last few minutes felt. But wasn't that always the case? So close yet so far away.

And then the locks clicked open and Loki grinned.

He stepped out of the cell and his entire appearance changed. No more beige coveralls. No more weary expression. Within seconds he was himself. Full God of Mischief. Green, gold, and all the regalia. As if he'd returned to life itself.

"Straight to business, I see." Loki grinned. "Idunn is here, of course. When we get out of the building, I'll beckon her for you."

Julia stared. It wasn't the dead eyed stare of a Julia with a hole punched in her soul. That said, there was something so completely reckless about her actions... She didn't trust Loki and started to doubt the word as bond.

But what other choice did she have?

It was time to leave.

"You're not really going to try and walk out of here like that?" she asked.

SMOL TIMES TWO

Guh. Loki hated it when other people made good points. He rolled his eyes and then a magic green glow washed over him. In an instant he went from God of Mischief to Gary the Custodial Worker.

He even had a mop and bucket.

"Better?"

Then he brushed past her towards the corridor, rolling his cleaning supplies along with him.

Now the hard part. Getting out. Cut to: a lot of things going wrong, improvising, things going right-- it would have made a great Loki's 11 movie. Those details to be filled out in the rest of event post.

Getting away with it, escaping, should have made Julia happy. Instead, enough went wrong that now she'll wonder how long she needs to look over her shoulder for the DSS.

Her eyes bore into the Trickster god next to her. His information was going to make all of this worth it, right?

Lots of magic here. Magic there. Fancy acrobatics with the mop and bucket. Would have looked sleek af in slow motion.

And then eventually they were Someplace Relatively Safe For the Time Being©.

And a bond was a bond, even if it did hurt Loki to give her what she wanted. Because, in truth, he liked what they'd become to each other. Even if it was just a dream.

He shrugged his shoulders and turned into Idunn. Well, not Idunn exactly. He turned into himself. Into herself. Into the goddess Julia knew her to be. “Hello, darling. Did you miss me?”

Julia's face crumbled. It was ten years of dreams decimated. Was it love? Julia had told herself it was love. Was it ambition? The heart break was physically painful, radiating from her chest, regardless.

"No." Denial was her first defense. "You're lying. The bond didn't work. You're fucking with me."

It took every stubborn cell in her body, but Julia refused to cry on principle. She wouldn't give Loki the satisfaction. Her eyes were red, but she kept them open, unblinking as if any excess moisture would just evaporate.

“I’m not lying. The bond worked. The bond always works. You’re a much better spell caster than you give yourself credit for, Julia. You should know that. It’s one of the things I love about you. The fact that you’re so good. Also that you aren’t afraid to stand up to those of us with more experience. Most people aren’t interesting. You are. You are in every universe.”

Loki held out her arms to the side. Open, vulnerable. This was the best she could do when it came to displaying honesty. At least, in this world. And in the presence of someone who didn’t remember the other her. The Loki who actually did consider herself to be Julia’s friend. The Loki whose feelings were still complicated.

“What’s wrong? You wanted a goddess. I am a goddess! You wanted someone who cared for you. Someone who looked out for you. I do and I did. All this time. What’s a name anyway? Idunn? Loki? Julia? That’s not the entirety of a person.”

SMOL SQUARED

Julia shook her head, arms crossed over her stomach. Her feet stepped forward and backward, torn between wanting to walk into those arms and letting Loki console her as she had in dream, or whether she should run from her feelings, scream her frustrations and do something destructive.

At least it was clear. This Julia, in this timeline, had her shade. She had no idea how precious that was. How much was missing from her otherwise. It was the clearest indication of how things might have worked out between them if things had just gone slightly differently.

She didn't from from Loki, but she couldn't bring herself to step forward into her arms either.

"You lied to me."

"I know. You're right. You are. I did lie. But ... that's what I do, Julia. I lie. Not about everything. And not all the time. But I do lie."

Goddess of Mischief. Goddess of Lies, according to some people. Loki had never liked that second title. It always felt so negative. So antagonistic. She lied. But she wasn't in control of all lies. Lies didn't come from her. It wasn't the gift she brought to Eaarth. Mischief. Trouble. That was her gift. That was her prerogative.

"Would you like an apology? I could give you one, but what would that change? You might not even believe it." Loki took a step forward, closing the gap between them. "I wish I could explain this in a way you would understand. But my feelings for you are real. They always have been. I think, in many ways, I've been waiting for someone like you my entire life. We just keep missing each other. Our timing is really off."

She touched Julia's shoulder. Gently. Two fingers trailing along the bony ridge. "Everything might be different tomorrow. This might not exist anymore. We might not exist. Not like this anyway. But if it does live on ... We could be different in this world. I could still be Idunn to you."

Julia’s face flashed an indescribable anger when Loki offered to be her Idunn. More lies. Was offering to continue the lie the best that Loki could do. Her hurt, her anger, became too overwhelming for Julia. She lashed out.

She kissed her.

It was aggressive, angry, with teeth. Julia wasn’t sure if she wanted to bite Loki— no. She absolutely wanted to bite Loki, she just wasn’t sure if she would. Her hands gripped Loki tightly, the bite of her nails present. Nothing made sense. Julia just needed an outlet.

Her fury felt so useless. Reduced to passion she could not even be sure was real.

SMOL QUINTET LIKE THE PAUL NEWMAN FILM

Not the reaction Loki expected.

She'd been prepared for violence. (Sadly, Loki always was.) She'd expected Julia to use her magic. To lash out at her with power - perhaps even with that secret power she knew Julia had hidden inside of her. She hadn't anticipated anything else.

Certainly not a kiss.

It was conflicting for Loki. Not for the version of herself who remembered spending the last decade trapped under fifteen tons of concrete and power dampening fields. But for the Loki who'd amassed an entirely different relationship with a very different Julia. And for a moment she actually felt something painful in her chest. An ache. But for what she wasn't sure.

She did return the kiss though. Not with the same bitter fervor that Julia had, but with longing. With need and desire and want. And if Julia wanted to bite her, she wouldn't stop her.

Yes, Loki had lied. But she'd also kept her promise that they'd find each other in the waking world. And they had. That had to count for something, right?
