It was a brisk day out in Salem, chilly enough to need a jacket but sunny enough to make a person want to sit outside while they enjoyed their lunch. There was almost no breeze and the general attitude around town was that it was time to celebrate winter being over. Officially. There was a sense of optimism in the the air as there often is this time of year. Grass is sprouting, birds are chirping, new life is beginning all around. It is a time most people see as a time of new beginnings. Cadence was one of those people.
With her two companions back at the hotel, she left, not as herself, but as a different person entirely. Almost no hair on his head, kind eyes, laugh lines, and weathered hands. This Charles Xavier did not need a wheelchair. He walked perfectly fine on his own. And those strange marks decorating the side of his face? Well he's not quite sure how they got there.
Wearing a respectable chocolate brown suit with a newsie cap of the same color and a gold tie, Charles Xavier took a lighthearted stroll down the busy streets. People were shopping, gabbing on the phone, walking dogs. People he passed that actually made eye contact received a smile from him as he passed. She knew Xavier had not been a man to go wheeling around downtown or really give too much of a public face for his school. That had been Jean's job. For this, Cadence was thankful. She knew it would give her some anonymity around town, a chance to test out these features and a new accent before arriving at the school itself.
She found a sweet little bistro nestled between a flower shop and a small office supply store and went inside. The smell was warm and heavenly; chocolate and cinnamon with the rich aroma of coffee mixing between them beautifully. She grabbed a paper to glance over while waiting, then ordered a large Earl Grey and a buttery croissant with strawberry preserves. Yes, her homework had been meticulous enough to even know what some of Xavier's favorite foods were. With her paper and noon snack, she went outside to sit at a table alone on the patio. She settled in and took a sip of her tea. After a moment, she settled back in her chair, opened the newspaper, and began to read.
