Who: Danny Rand and Dinah Lance
Where: School of Thunder, NYC
When: November 14th, 2012
What: Danny and Dinah have another of their weekly sparring matches.
Rating: PG-13
Danny stood before a dozen of his students, young boys and girls who would likely be on the streets if they were not here. The youngest of the small group was seven, while the oldest was fifteen. When their different races and backgrounds factored into the equation it could not have been a more varied group. The only thing that identified them as one body was the white gi that they wore, with the Chinese symbol for thunder on the back, and an actual thunderbolt symbol on the front. Despite his relative status to his students, Danny wore the very same gi to further their union, and to not set himself apart or above them in any way short of his knowledge and training.
"The last thing I am going to teach you about today, is the hardest thing you will ever have to learn to do", Danny said as his eyes looked individually to each of his students. "I have taught you how to move, and to strike, but now you must learn how to take a hit as well."
One of his students, Jamal, a tough talking kid that Danny had taken in to get him away from a gang spoke up immediately. "Sensei, I mean disrespect. But what I'm hearing is that you are gonna teach us the art of getting our asses kicked."
Danny smiled.
"That's exactly what I am going to teach you. And since you guessed at it Jamal, I want you to come front and center to help me demonstrate."
Jamal clearly did not like that notion, but he bowed his head and came forward none the less.
At which point Danny turned and took a swing at him without warning, causing Jamal to nearly jump out of his skin, even though the blow did not come close to connecting.
"What happened there?"
"What.. what happened there!? You done scared the shit outta me, that's what happened!"
Danny waited for the laughter of the rest of the students to die down before speaking up.
"You tensed up. Your body stiffened. And if I had actually hit you, you would have taken the full force of my punch. What I mean to teach you, is that you have to be like the reed and bend, to allow the force of the blow to pass through you. Tomorrow I will show you exactly what I mean, but for now..."
Danny glanced toward the entrance, and sensed the presence there before she came into view.
"...why don't you welcome our guest."
Torrential Stampede of Children.
Immediately, his students turned toward one and sprinted toward the door. It was not the first time that he had sent the kids after Dinah, nor would it likely be the last. He liked to joke that it was his way of softening her up before their match, but really the students just adored working with her. Especially the boys. As the swarm rushed her on the way out, he watched with his arms crossed and a smile on his face.
