WHO: Hecate and open
WHEN: Tuesday 22nd of September
WHERE: At the Enodia, Hecate's hotel.
WHAT: Hecate's annual Fall Equinox party, this year in the form of a masquerade ball.
WARNINGS: TBA - maybe put any warnings in the subject lines of comments.

Every year Hecate threw a party for the fall equinox.

This year came with a wariness that her mind should be focused on the search for the soul eater hunting through her city. There were, however, already mechanisms in place – her close knit family of staff and regulars from her witchy shop in Astoria were all eager to help, the party being part of their annual rituals as well. The Enodia was always booked out for the night of the equinox, every year since she opened. It would have been almost as much trouble to cancel it – it certainly would have disappointed more people.

Conversation around the shop and within the hotel had centered around an anxious fall, most of the mortals she spoke to were looking toward the near future with dread and cynicism, she wouldn’t darken their days further by canceling a night of celebration. A night of change.

And the equinox should be marked. The earth at equilibirum, the seasons turning toward winter, gratitude given to the earth for the bounty of the summer. No, canceling would be wrong, in so many ways.

So Hecate delegated a little more of the organisation than she ordinarily would have, and concentrated on maintaining the protection around herself, around Qebhet and Anubis, their homes and the funeral home. The Enodia, too, received stronger wards than before, with more layers of magic woven across each doorway.

She turned her head three ways. One toward the soul eater. One toward the protection of everyone who stepped through her doors. One toward the celebration of the equinox itself.

This last one involved many things, gratitude toward the earth and care of neglected people not being the least of them. She rose at dawn to greet the day, and rolled up her sleeves to get stuck in to overseeing the delivery of large amounts of food to several of the homeless shelters around the city. She attended a huge lunch at a youth centre and an afternoon tea at a woman’s shelter, weaving blessings into the food. The shelter often referred women to her, cases that for one reason or another needed a little more protection than most. The youth centre was new, set up by a couple of women who'd left the shelter several years ago. Hecate smiled at the circular nature of the best parts of humanity and poured them all blessed cups of tea.

And she slept. A lot. Deeply. The equinox was a time of great power for her, but she was using so much of it up. The night itself, though... this would be a night of joy and celebration, of power and magic, of mortals and immortals on even ground, as equilibrium, as the earth was.

And anyone who threatened that equilibrium Hecate was going to turn into a sparrow.

The entrance hall was a place of welcome, decorated in colours of fall. Long tables were adorned with food, small cakes sweetened with honey, squares of cornbread, seed crackers and cheese, pomegranate everywhere. Candles and golden leaves, grapes and apples. And wine, endless wine and sparkling cider, deep red bowls of punch with freshly sliced fruit floating on top. Freshly pressed apple juice and pomegranate cordial, very lightly fermented, enough for a little spritz on the tongue.

There was more food, further in. Heavier fare, soups and roast meat and root vegetables, and desserts: hot apples pies, cool maple pumpkin pies, fresh whipped cream. Platters of tarts; spiced cherry and strawberry, vegan passionfruit and chocolate, mango and macadamia. All laid out on platters in a buffet in the hotel’s dining room; the entrance hall was just for starters.

Further up, one of the conference rooms had turned into the chocolate room, full of warm squishy couches, a ring of beanbags around a low table set with a fondue, the little tealight candle burning merrily away, keeping the chocolate hot. At a longer table, three cauldrons of hot chocolate – one creamy, one dark, one heavily alcoholic.

And light, light everywhere. Light in the form of candles and chandeliers, of delicate fairylights woven through vines, up the balustrades of staircases. Trees of light growing in shadowy corners. In the chocolate room, light from lamps that resembled the moon, soft and cool light, a little mysterious and very cozy. Along the hallways the usually fluorescent lights were off, replaced with rivers of tiny twinkling lights upon the ceiling, rivulets dripping down the walls.

Some of the rooms had been booked out by party guests who wanted to stay the night, but others were open, little oasis of relative quiet. The music from the ballroom – an eclectic mix of ancient, classical and modern – wound its way through all the open rooms, by magic, or possibly the magic of clever wiring.

The ball room was the most magical of all, the ceiling adorned with constellations of light. Yet still, it was a room of shadows, as everyone who entered seemed to cast three. Shadows clung in the corners and shadows clung around ankles and shadows wove and danced their way through god and mortal alike. The refreshment table glowed with golden light, twinkling off the bubbles in the glasses of champagne and sparkling grape juice. More grapes, more pomegranate, more handmade chocolate truffles among the candles.

Starting tomorrow Hecate was going to sleep for a week. Or hunt for a week. Or... she was leaving the third option open.

Tonight the world began to shift toward the dark of winter. Anything could happen.

Except trouble. Except harm. “If anyone causes harm tonight,” Hecate said, laying her hand on Hecuba’s head (the black dog in a golden collar, to match the black and gold of Hecate’s dress) “I’m going to turn them into a sparrow.”

Hecuba turned her head toward the puppy, who had discovered one of the cushions from the chocolate room and was tearing it to shreds on the shiny floor of the entrance hall, foam flying as she shook the pillow to break its neck. “Serene,” Hecate said sharply. She coaxed the pillow from the puppy’s strong jaw, and quickly, while no one was looking, put the cushion back together with a clever wave of her hand.

“If anyone causes harm to anything more than a pillow,” Hecate changed her phrasing, though Hecuba did not look satisfied. “Sparrow.”

Will Scarlet, Apollo, a bit later on

Will sauntered off towards the bar to order a cocktail. Funny how this was where he seemed to end up, everyone else finding someplace to go, someone to be with, and he was drinking alone again. Much and Leila were... somewhere, and John and Elaine were either dancing or probably making out furiously in their weird tall and short dynamic.

There was a woman with a similar plan re: cocktails already standing by the bar, sipping on something that smelled very fruity, and he smiled at her as he took his gin and tonic. “Hi. Enjoying the party?”

The woman looked up, and even through the mask, Will could see she was one of the most lovely women he’d ever seen in his life. His smile grew unconsciously, and a small answering smile came from her too. She came a little closer.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it? This hall?” she asked, and Will had to nod and agree, not taking his eyes off her. “I’m performing later with my sisters. You should see it. It’s not every day that the Muses perform for the crowd.”

“A muse! Well, that explains... you.” He winked at her and sipped his drink, and she twirled a tendril of her hair. They introduced themselves and chatted a while, enjoying the company and talking to someone attractive. The mused edged closer to him, laughing at his jokes, looking up into his eyes. Will was starting to feel extremely flattered by such attention.

But then she froze, looking past him, her eyes going round behind her mask, and with a fleeting, “Oh no! Goodbye!” she turned and hurried away to lose herself in the crowd.

“Hey, wait!” Will called after her, about to take a step in pursuit, but stopping himself and shaking his head. “Ahh dammit.”

Once again, Erato was running from him. Apollo had to believe she was teasing him on purpose, letting him see her for just long enough to gaze longingly at her before she 'noticed' him and vanished into the crowd. She kept doing it. Pretty soon Apollo was going to need to arrange things in a way she... not, 'couldn't' run, exactly, but in a way that would mean she didn't want to. He didn't mind the cat and mouse games, but how was he supposed to make it up to her if she kept running?

He had plans she was going to love, though. Plans to spoil her rotten, plans to show her how much she meant to him, how much he adored her. Plans for the end of the night, though. For now... he let her slip away, and joined the young man at the bar. "Best not to chase her," he commended the immortals decision not to pursue, as he picked up another glass of wine for himself and looked the other man over. Oh he was a handsome thing. Apollo felt a pull of interest, and smiled flirtatiously over his glass. "Best to focus on somebody who is interested in being caught, don't you think?"

Will looked around at the smooth, warm voice behind him. "Yeah, I-" he began, before taking in the man talking to him. Tall, golden, fit, a beaming smile, the man seemed to glisten gold in some lights. Will wasn't a short man but this one was taller. He had to stare, because it took a while to take him all in.

"I have a feeling she was running from you," he said, leaning against the bar. "Is that an effect you cause in many people?"

"She was," said Apollo, turning his head so his eyes followed Erato, giving Will a longer opportunity to stare at him. Apollo enjoying knowing he was being admired. "She's my sister, it's a family drama. I keep trying to fix it," he shook his golden head, and turned back toward the bar, and the man leaning on it. He had a nice lean. Very angular. Very cool. Shit, Apollo was feeling horny tonight.

"I know plenty about family drama," Will said with a shrug. Not that he wanted to bring his Sherwood cohorts to mind when he was looking at a golden god (and he was sure the guy was a god, how could he be anything less?)

He smiled and took a drink as Apollo turned back to look at him. "What were you saying about wanting to be caught?"

Apollo ran his thumb a couple of times over his bottom lip, thoughtfully. "Oh, just admiring your hunter's physique," he said, openly admiring Will's hunter physique. "And the impressive size of your horns."

Will smirked, and reached up to curl his fingers around one of the horns on his mask and stroke it a couple of times. He was going for a gold forest stag man look tonight. "They're a bitch getting through doors, I keep forgetting and almost falling over," he said. "I like your mask too. Very shiny. Can I get you a drink?" As if he was paying for it.

Apollo approved of the suggestive way those fingers curled around that horn. "I never turn down an offer like that," he grinned. "Or the chance to be shiny. You need to be more like a stag on the rut," he added. "For the doorways."

Will snorted. "I'm not about to start charging about and fighting other people wearing horned masks," he scoffed, and waved at the bartender to get the god a drink. "So, is this place your sort of jam? You do big knees-ups like this very much?" He meant the luxury, the money-is-no-object vibe he got from a lot of the gods.

"Oh, handsome, I do everything," Apollo meant exactly what he said. "Tonight's a masque ball, tomorrow a midweek bar crawl through Soho, next day it's ladies night at one of the bars just off campus, and all that's a good long warm up for the marathon parties over the weekend. You? How's your party stamina?"

"I've had no complaints about my stamina," Will said with a smirk. "Parties, however, I do a bit less of. Campus? You spend time at university then?" He finished his drink and set it down on the bar. "By what should I call you?"

Apollo accepted his drink from the bartender with a wink toward her - he'd exchanged numbers with her earlier. "Yeah, I thought I'd shoot through another degree in medicine, see what's new. They don't let you near patients without one, and who's going to believe this face qualified thirty years ago," he grinned, and pushed up his mask. "You can call me Apollo."

Oh wow. Apollo was a big name. Will nodded, trying to remember if he'd ever heard Luna mention him.

"You can call me Scarlet," he replied, and he wondered if he was right in getting a particular vibe about this encounter. He hadn't come tonight with the intention of hooking up with anyone, but... well it would be rude to turn this one away, if that's where he was going. "I'm getting the feeling medical school is a bit of a doddle for you. Always pays to study up, though, doesn't it?"

"Scarlet," Apollo liked the way the name felt on his tongue. He liked the hint of anonymity too - he'd just proved with the hot Celtic chick that he didn't need to know someone's name to get off with them. "Yeah it does," he said, catching his tongue between his teeth for a second. "I'm studying your anatomy right now. Damn, Scarlet. You work out."

"I run. Gotta be good at running in my line of folklore. And climbing." Will smiled at Apollo, leaning forward a little. "Am I right in guessing that your whole look just happens naturally?"

"Right on the money. Though I'm fantastic at sports," he said, taking Scarlet's lean as encouragement and stepping forward himself, hooking an arm around the other man's back and pulling him close. "And I love a physical challenge, don't you?" he asked, and kissed him full on the mouth.

Will hadn't been kissed by someone taller than himself in quite some time, or quite so confidently by a stranger. That wasn't to say it was a bad kiss, at all. Far from it. He kissed him back, leaning into it, getting a pretty good idea of what that physical challenge was going to be.

Oh shit yeah, Apollo was into this. He made a nice change after the mysterious golden eyed Celtic woman earlier, all soft and sharp and dangerous but not firm and athletic like this one. Apollo slid his hand up into Scarlet's hair, pleased that there was just enough there to grip onto when he ramped up the kiss a notch.

Will could make this justify the messing up of his hair, if what followed the kiss was just as good as it. He slid a hand up around the back of Apollo's neck, pulling their bodies closer together. The mask was starting to bug him a bit though.

Apollo pulled back from the kiss, both his hands running down Scarlett's chest to grab firmly onto his waistband. "Come back to my room," he said, with a lusty, playful grin. "Show me what that stamina's like."

"Why the fuck not," Will replied, biting his lip with a grin in return, and let Apollo lead him away towards the exit. He was too in the moment to think to message Tuck about it. He'd have to tell him later.
