WHO: Hecate and open
WHEN: Tuesday 22nd of September
WHERE: At the Enodia, Hecate's hotel.
WHAT: Hecate's annual Fall Equinox party, this year in the form of a masquerade ball.
WARNINGS: TBA - maybe put any warnings in the subject lines of comments.

Every year Hecate threw a party for the fall equinox.

This year came with a wariness that her mind should be focused on the search for the soul eater hunting through her city. There were, however, already mechanisms in place – her close knit family of staff and regulars from her witchy shop in Astoria were all eager to help, the party being part of their annual rituals as well. The Enodia was always booked out for the night of the equinox, every year since she opened. It would have been almost as much trouble to cancel it – it certainly would have disappointed more people.

Conversation around the shop and within the hotel had centered around an anxious fall, most of the mortals she spoke to were looking toward the near future with dread and cynicism, she wouldn’t darken their days further by canceling a night of celebration. A night of change.

And the equinox should be marked. The earth at equilibirum, the seasons turning toward winter, gratitude given to the earth for the bounty of the summer. No, canceling would be wrong, in so many ways.

So Hecate delegated a little more of the organisation than she ordinarily would have, and concentrated on maintaining the protection around herself, around Qebhet and Anubis, their homes and the funeral home. The Enodia, too, received stronger wards than before, with more layers of magic woven across each doorway.

She turned her head three ways. One toward the soul eater. One toward the protection of everyone who stepped through her doors. One toward the celebration of the equinox itself.

This last one involved many things, gratitude toward the earth and care of neglected people not being the least of them. She rose at dawn to greet the day, and rolled up her sleeves to get stuck in to overseeing the delivery of large amounts of food to several of the homeless shelters around the city. She attended a huge lunch at a youth centre and an afternoon tea at a woman’s shelter, weaving blessings into the food. The shelter often referred women to her, cases that for one reason or another needed a little more protection than most. The youth centre was new, set up by a couple of women who'd left the shelter several years ago. Hecate smiled at the circular nature of the best parts of humanity and poured them all blessed cups of tea.

And she slept. A lot. Deeply. The equinox was a time of great power for her, but she was using so much of it up. The night itself, though... this would be a night of joy and celebration, of power and magic, of mortals and immortals on even ground, as equilibrium, as the earth was.

And anyone who threatened that equilibrium Hecate was going to turn into a sparrow.

The entrance hall was a place of welcome, decorated in colours of fall. Long tables were adorned with food, small cakes sweetened with honey, squares of cornbread, seed crackers and cheese, pomegranate everywhere. Candles and golden leaves, grapes and apples. And wine, endless wine and sparkling cider, deep red bowls of punch with freshly sliced fruit floating on top. Freshly pressed apple juice and pomegranate cordial, very lightly fermented, enough for a little spritz on the tongue.

There was more food, further in. Heavier fare, soups and roast meat and root vegetables, and desserts: hot apples pies, cool maple pumpkin pies, fresh whipped cream. Platters of tarts; spiced cherry and strawberry, vegan passionfruit and chocolate, mango and macadamia. All laid out on platters in a buffet in the hotel’s dining room; the entrance hall was just for starters.

Further up, one of the conference rooms had turned into the chocolate room, full of warm squishy couches, a ring of beanbags around a low table set with a fondue, the little tealight candle burning merrily away, keeping the chocolate hot. At a longer table, three cauldrons of hot chocolate – one creamy, one dark, one heavily alcoholic.

And light, light everywhere. Light in the form of candles and chandeliers, of delicate fairylights woven through vines, up the balustrades of staircases. Trees of light growing in shadowy corners. In the chocolate room, light from lamps that resembled the moon, soft and cool light, a little mysterious and very cozy. Along the hallways the usually fluorescent lights were off, replaced with rivers of tiny twinkling lights upon the ceiling, rivulets dripping down the walls.

Some of the rooms had been booked out by party guests who wanted to stay the night, but others were open, little oasis of relative quiet. The music from the ballroom – an eclectic mix of ancient, classical and modern – wound its way through all the open rooms, by magic, or possibly the magic of clever wiring.

The ball room was the most magical of all, the ceiling adorned with constellations of light. Yet still, it was a room of shadows, as everyone who entered seemed to cast three. Shadows clung in the corners and shadows clung around ankles and shadows wove and danced their way through god and mortal alike. The refreshment table glowed with golden light, twinkling off the bubbles in the glasses of champagne and sparkling grape juice. More grapes, more pomegranate, more handmade chocolate truffles among the candles.

Starting tomorrow Hecate was going to sleep for a week. Or hunt for a week. Or... she was leaving the third option open.

Tonight the world began to shift toward the dark of winter. Anything could happen.

Except trouble. Except harm. “If anyone causes harm tonight,” Hecate said, laying her hand on Hecuba’s head (the black dog in a golden collar, to match the black and gold of Hecate’s dress) “I’m going to turn them into a sparrow.”

Hecuba turned her head toward the puppy, who had discovered one of the cushions from the chocolate room and was tearing it to shreds on the shiny floor of the entrance hall, foam flying as she shook the pillow to break its neck. “Serene,” Hecate said sharply. She coaxed the pillow from the puppy’s strong jaw, and quickly, while no one was looking, put the cushion back together with a clever wave of her hand.

“If anyone causes harm to anything more than a pillow,” Hecate changed her phrasing, though Hecuba did not look satisfied. “Sparrow.”

"You guess?" Apollo reached forward and took her hand, covering it with his other, his head at a curious tilt. "Jaded by this party already, Marcella?"

She looked down as he took her hand and didn't give it back. He was putting a little pressure on her sore knuckles, but not unbearably much. "I don't know you yet, that's all," she said, trying to gently pull her hand back and finding his hold a little firmer than she'd thought. "People aren't always who you think they are."

Or as single as she thought they were.

"True enough," Apollo made a small show of graciously releasing her hands, a brief moment after she'd started trying to pull away. He leaned up against the back of the couch, his arm extended over the back of it, toward her. His hand wasn't touching her, but it wasn't outside the realm of possibility that he could shift his hand, slightly, and curl a lock of hair between his deft fingers. "What can I do, Marcella, to make this party worth your while?"

She wasn't sure if she wanted him to go away or not, and she hesitated. She still felt heartbroken, but she also felt lonely, so she wasn't in the mood for making small talk but felt bad being alone.

"I don't know," was all she could manage, lifting the glass to her lips. "What do you do?"

Apollo spread his hands, an offering of the world. He considered her a little closer, as he spoke. Not just as a beautiful (if standoffish) woman, not just as Ares' daughter, but to try and see beneath the mask. "Prophecy, music, poetry, archery. Healing," he added, his eyes dropping to her hands. Covered in lace, yes, but unless he was very much mistaken (and was he ever?) they were in need of a little Apollo action.

Marcie followed his gaze down to her hands. Well, what did she have to lose? (the soft touch of Much's thumb across her bruises)

She pulled the lace gloves off, not particularly delicately, and finished her drink so she could put the glass aside. "How does it work?" she asked, turning towards him on the couch, her hands cautiously held forward.

Apollo took one hand in each of his, feeling the weight in each palm. Not just the physical weight, but the matter of them, the mettle. They were warm hands, and he took more time than he needed, his long fingers extending up along her wrists, and then stroking down her palms till her fingers curled against his. He lifted her hand to his mouth, leaning closer still, and pressed his lips against the swollen, bruised knuckles. Beneath his lips, her hand began to repair, and slowly he shifted his mouth from one knuckle to the next, till her hand felt whole and pure, till his mouth felt like he wanted to kiss the delicate skin on her wrist, the inside of her elbow, her shoulder, her mouth. "That's how it works," his voice was a little husky, as he reached for her second hand. "Shall I keep going?"

Marcie's mouth went a little dry, watching Apollo. His soft lips on her hand as her skin tingled under his touch, the broken capillaries knitting back together, felt nice, even though it wasn't the man she'd wanted it from. She swallowed hard.

Wordlessly, she nodded, and touched the pink skin around her wrist too, hoping he could make that vanish as well. She was tired of the reminder of what had happened to her, and having people glance at her, making assumptions.

Apollo was loving this, feeling the delicate skin of her wrist mend under his lips. He even darted his tongue out over her pulse, for the healing, you know?

"There," he said, his fingers curled around both her wrists. "Perfect once more." But he dropped a final kiss onto the centre of her wrist, where the pale skin covered the delicate blue veins, his eyes meeting hers as he did.

"Oh," Marcie said, struck a little dumb by the action. He was certainly a beautiful man, and his eyes and lips spoke volumes. She wasn't entirely sure what she would do if he came closer- but then, she didn't have to find out.

There was a loud shout of, "AH-AH! NO!" with the tone a wayward pup being scolded for getting into something it shouldn't. She jumped and looked around, just as Ares marched up to them, pointing a finger at Apollo. "YOU GET OFF!"

Aphrodite had slipped away to greet someone else and go for refreshments, leaving Ares alone, and he'd glanced around the room and spied the pair. It was bad enough that Apollo had encroached into Aphrodite's bed. No chance was he getting his grubby paws on anything else of Ares'.

Tongue pressed into the corner of his cheek, Apollo turned on the couch to face Ares, but didn't otherwise move his body any further from Marcella. "Problem, Ares?" he asked with a smile.

Marcie stared up at Ares as he stopped by them.

"Get that shit-eating look off your face. She's off limits to you. Go find one of your harem to violate instead," Ares barked, puffing up his chest.

"Violate?" Apollo asked, ignoring the threat radiating off Ares with the air of one who believed he couldn't be touched, as he turned to give Marcella an inquiring look. "Do you feel violated?" he asked her, searching her face. Off limits, was she?

Marcie started to shake her head and opened her mouth to answer, but Ares fixed her with a furious stare.

"Go find somewhere else to be," he snapped at Apollo, jerking a hand at Marcie to indicate she should move away. She glanced back at Apollo, still a bit stunned to react properly. This was clearly part of something much bigger and long running that she was a tiny fraction of.

"Where do you suggest?" Apollo asked, looking around the room as if he was considering his options, as if there was any chance he was not about to say what he was about to say. "Aphrodite's looking a little unsatisfied over there, I could take her for a spin around the... ballroom."

"Maybe Melpomene will open her legs for you, now that I'm done with her," Ares snarled back. "If you're even capable of satisfying her now she's had me. She's a right dirty fuck."

Marcie decided that maybe she did want to move back after all, and she shifted backwards on the couch, looking back and forth between the two gods with wariness, but curiosity too. She wasn't going to miss this fight.

Apollo's face darkened, and he pushed himself off the couch, his carelessness gone as he stood eye to eye with Ares. He could feel magic crackling in the air around them but he didn't care. "Oh I've already reminded her what it's like to be with a real god," he growled back at Ares. "She was on me the second she learned I was back. When it comes to pleasure, you're nothing compared to me."

"I bet she was," Ares replied, stepping up eye to eye with Apollo. "She's gagging for it, she'll take it from anywhere. All your high and mighty Muses, your personal gaggle of whores for your amusement. All of them on their knees for any old frat boy with a guitar. You taught them well."

Drawn toward the imminent implosion, Melpomene perched on the arm of the couch beside Marcie, watching the two Olympians. Apollo had thrown his head back in laughter at Ares' latest attempt at an insult. "You're just bitter because in all these millennia, only a fraction of them have deigned to look at you. You're a joke. No wonder Aphrodite left you high and dry for so long."

Melpomene caught Marcie's eye. "Welcome to your first Greek party."

"She did not "leave me high and dry", you little shit," Ares spat, reaching out for a handful of Apollo's jacket. "She loves me before all others. We're getting married again. Whereas you, with your fuckboy ways, I'm not having you taint my blood with your philandering cock and teaching her to be a part of your brothel. You can back the fuck off."

Marcie felt a jolt when Ares referred to her as his. It was the first time she'd heard him say anything close to claiming her as his own. She looked up at Melpomene, startled by the silent appearance of the Muse. "Does this happen a lot?" she asked. "Is Ares defending my honour?"

"This happens all the time," explained Melpomene, who'd missed seeing such clashes of power around lately. "You could see it as defending your honour, but really, he's only defending his own blood. It just happens to be in your veins. Oh - watch this," she nudged Marcie's attention away from the gods, as Hecate approached through the crowd of onlookers.

"You know what," Apollo was smiling as he curled his hands over Ares' fists and beginning to crush them slowly, a reminder that his strength rivaled Ares' own. "I don't think I will. And I don't think there's a thing you can do to stop me or my cock from having whoever I like. Your blood, your new wife, whoever I -" A rippling pain shot through him- shot through both Olympians as Hecate's hands outstretched toward them. She yanked her hands apart and the gods staggered away from each other, puppies pulled by their scruff.

Apollo opened his mouth to curse and nothing but silence came out, the spell locking down his voice just as it locked down Ares'.

"That's enough," said Hecate, her voice mild enough, though her eyes blazed dark, and focused more on Ares than Apollo. She didn't miss the obscene gesture Apollo's hands threw at Ares, though.

Ares gritted his teeth at the loss of his voice. He jabbed a finger at Apollo, then drew his thumb across his throat, making a pretty clear wordless indication of how he felt about Apollo's cocky attitude. He did see Hecate watching him more, though, and he pointed accusingly at Apollo, and then gestured at Marcie, who looked a little surprised to be the centre of attention. He noticed Melpomene then too, and mouthed, "What the fuck-" at her before remembering he had no speech.

"I don't care who started it," Hecate said to Ares, facing him. He was at least a head taller, and almost twice as wide, but in terms of power she didn't doubt herself. "You're not to lay hands on any of my guests-" Her own hand shot out behind her, grabbing Apollo's wrist as he was in the middle of making an obscene wanking gesture at Ares. She turned her head and hit him with a dark look, before returning her attention Ares.

She had not forgotten what he had done to Luna, and she still held the clear memory of the pain she'd pulled from the girl, and Hecate was itching to deal it back to him. Were she not surrounded by people under her protection, she would have done it right here.

Ares would explode like a bomb if she attacked his most sensitive area, though. It was the only reason she held back; the collateral damage.

"I made a promise to myself that I would turn any troublemakers tonight into sparrows, so the choice is yours," she warned the pair of them. "Behave or be birds."

Ares would be growling if he could be heard. He pointed a finger at Apollo again, more insistently, and when that didn't get the response he wanted, he shoved his middle finger up in Apollo's face, although without touching him. He turned back to Hecate and pointed at his throat, mouthing, "NOW" at her. There was a small crowd of onlookers now, watching the events play out with amusement and curiosity.

Marcie watched them, her gaze drawn to Hecate. How did the woman contain so much power? She could take peoples' voices and turn them into sparrows? She hadn't know anyone could actually do that. She glanced up at Melpomene to see if she seemed surprised at all.

Hecate waved her hands at the onlookers, not as a magic spell but simply a firm request that they stop staring. Some did. Melpomene definitely didn't.

She wasn't surprised, but neither was she pleased. It was disquieting, seeing her Musagetes and the father of her child both silenced at once. She told herself that this is what happens to pride, but it didn't make it any more satisfying to watch. It took her a moment to recognise the root of it: there was no catharsis in this, that was the problem. Hecate had ended the fight too soon.

Hecate refused to give Ares back his voice because he demanded it, but keeping it from him for too long would, she suspected, have the same bomb-like effects on her guests as he took out his frustration on someone else. "Outside the ballroom doors is a corridor. Turn left, and at the end of it you'll find a bathroom. Your voice will return when you see yourself in the mirror. Apollo: same instructions, but turn right. Neither of you break anything."
