Whenever Antigone thought about confronting Ares in the past long weeks, she always imagined she'd do it with anger.

That she'd burn hot with the fire of injustice, that it would eviscerate all her fear.

It wasn't like that, though, as she followed Ares out into the night. It wasn't like that at all.

She was sad, she was resolute, and each step solidified her heart. With love, she thought. Solidified it with love. For the stranger in the bar, for the muse that'd given her a place to wash Maxwell's blood from her hands and a place to rest after. For every fellow woman that any man had ever used.

Asterion was checking in a small group of immortals when she left, she could slip out easily, through the crowded front room and into the night. The air was warm, and still, and full of voices, full of nightlife. Ares' form was unmistakable, though, so much bigger than most of the young, young things out tonight, as he cut away from them down an alley.

"You know what you're doing is wrong, Ares," Antigone called out to Ares' retreating back, her voice clear as she stepped into the alley behind him. "I know you know, and I know you don't care, but it's wrong. You're wrong."

Oh, Chronos wept, what now?

Ares had been feeling actually okay after that almost-confrontation. He'd get what he wanted out of Luna and he didn't even have to chase her. He was going to go home to his apartment and just relax on his own for a bit, maybe play with the puppies.

And now some bitch was yelling at him, and he didn't know what the fuck ever for. He paused and half-turned back, since she'd used his name.

"And who the fuck are you and why should I care?" he called back, turning to keep walking away.

'My name is Antigone," she said, continuing to step toward him. She could feel her heartbeat, racing, but it felt like it was very far away. Like a distant warning alarm rather than a fact of biology. "I live with Romeo, and I'm here to tell you that as long as I live, you are never touching her again."

The guilt felt far more real than her heartbeat did. The knowledge that she'd tried to live with it too long, and though her head had never really been in the sand, she hadn't acted sooner. She should have put herself in the way sooner. She was Antigone. He was wrong. The constant bruises Romeo was forced to carry were wrong. How could she live in a world where she didn't do something about it?

	Ares did stop and half turn back that time, because it wasn't the answer he'd been expecting. "I don't know what Erato has been telling you, but she's lying. Not that I'd- Wait. "No kidding," Antigone said through her teeth. Of course he'd accuse Romeo of lying, but it came off as a bit pathetic, when Antigone felt it was so obvious they both knew how badly he'd been treating Romeo. Why lie about that, other than that it was just what men did when they raped their way through woman after woman. Lie about it, get away with it.

But they both knew what he was. There was no point in lying. "The night you put your fist through our wall?" she said, folding her arms at him, waiting for him to admit it. "Remember?"

"That night?" Ares had to remember. Oh yeah. Good night. "That wasn't Erato. That was..." And he started to laugh as he realised. He remembered the pale, startled face appearing in the kitchen, and Melpomene telling her to go away. He'd actually forgotten about her until now.

"Oh she's been twisting you up too, hasn't she, that crafty cunt," he said, extremely amused that he wasn't the only one Melpomene had designs on. "Your Romeo is Melpomene, not Erato. Why the fuck did she tell you that?"

	"--Bullshit," Antigone said, after a very confused pause, since those weren't the lies she expected out of his mouth at all. And they were lies, obviously, but his laugh was ringing alarm bells. "If you'd met Erato, you'd know the difference, trust me on that. Erato's tits are way nicer. Do you want me to call her? I can get her on video chat for you." Ares started walking back towards Antigone with his phone out. "Or, hey I know, ask someone at the club. They'll tell you." He was just absolutely so amused that Melpomene would lie about who she was for no godsdamned reason. This poor girl thought she was standing up for her friend, and she didn't even have her story straight.

Antigone tensed up entirely as he came closer, snapping "Back off!" She clenched her fists, tight enough to make her muscles twitch, and started to think - fuck, had she got it wrong, that first time? She'd been pretty shellshocked herself, after Maxwell, and - no, fuck, it didn't matter what he said. "She's Romeo to me," she said firmly. "And she is not your toy. You stay away from her."

"Oh cos you're so irresistible!" Antigone rolled her eyes right back, ignoring the second part because the world domination stuff was ridiculous. Not answering the last part because the only thing she could do was to plant her heels, stand in his way, and scream. "Fuck you and fuck your arrogance. She doesn't want you. I've seen her, after you've gone. She does not want you."

Antigone's mouth fell open, in pure shock that he'd forced a pregnancy onto her, and then had the nerve to claim that a woman couldn't be pregnant if she didn't want it. The sheer wrongness of it shook her, never mind that it was a sentiment she'd responded to over and over again online. Hearing it spoken so brashly was infuriating-

And then he was claiming she begged for him. How often had she heard that she was asking for it. "Fuck you, you monster!" she screamed, and in a mad rush, dove at his face to claw out his eyes.

"Holy shit!" Ares threw his hands up to ward off the crazy girl throwing herself at him, not that he was worried about hurting her, but that he didn't want other people passing by to make trouble for him in the wrong places. "Get the fuck off me, you psycho! This is your last warning!" Oh he was going to make her stop if she didn't soon. He fended off her scratching hands, trying to catch her wrists and hold her at bay.

"Shut the fuck up, you lying, twisted asshole!" Antigone screamed at him, heaving herself backwards to try and break his grip on her wrists.

She knew going in that he outmatched her, but she also knew with all her heart he was wrong. The things he did were wrong. The war he waged against the bodies of women most of all. She did not think she could win, but she also knew that she had died for things she believed in less than this.

And even if her death made no difference, it would still mean that Antigone had said to herself no. I don't accept this world. I will not learn to live alongside evil. I refuse. I would rather die.

So Antigone ignored his warning, and tried to lunge forward and knee him in the balls.

Antigone hit the edge of a skip when he shoved her, grunting at the impact though her adrenaline was high enough that it spared her from pain. "Fuck you," she continued, pushing herself off it and stepping toward him again. "Fuck you and everything you stand for and everything you do. You will have to kill me to stop me coming at you."

She knew her part. She knew who she was. I am here to tell you no she'd told Creon, her uncle, her king, when he'd forced her world into something unlivable. I am here to tell you no, and to die.

Asterion had noticed Antigone had disappeared while he was not paying attention, though when she didn't return he started to worry. He had someone check the toilets, and when she wasn't in there he stepped through the public area and outside. That was when he heard the yelling in the alley.

He darted around the corner in time to hear Antigone yell that the man was going to have to kill her to get her to stop, and that was when he recognised the man as Ares.

"NO!" Asterion yelled, rushing forward. He put himself between Ares and Antigone, glaring at Ares. "Leave her alone," he growled, his voice low.

Ares stared at the man. He knew who he was, he was familiar with the bouncers, but this guy just came snorting up and glaring at HIM?

"Tell this fucking psycho to back the fuck off if she doesn't want to get a smack!" he barked at Asterion. "ME leave HER alone? It's not MY fault Melpomene has been playing her twisted tragic stories out with her. Crazy bitch!" He glowered at the pair of them.

"Asterion, don't," Antigone warned, stepping round in front of him before Ares could take a swing at him. His use of the name Melpomene again made her stomach wriggle with an uncomfortable warning but she shoved it away. "It's not just her. It's every woman you hurt. The girl in the bar. Every victim of every soldier you send to war who takes it out on a woman. It's EVERYTHING, Ares, and that IS your fault!" She lunged again, in single minded determination.

	Asterion reached out to catch Antigone, but it was for her protection and not Ares'. Ares could break Antigone in half. He'd have much more trouble with Asterion himself, who had biceps the size of Ares' head. "Don't call my friend a psycho or a bitch!" he yelled at Ares. "Antigone, stop! He's not worth your death!" Ares flexed his hands, a rush of adrenaline flowing through him. Not that he was worried about this girl throwing herself about- she was just a boat dashing herself on his immovable rocks. Asterion though, now there he might have a bit of fun.

"I'll call her a psycho bitch if she IS a psycho bitch," Ares snarled. "I am not responsible for war. I AM WAR." His voice reverberated, like thunder in the distance. If she didn't check herself, a storm was coming.
