WHO Ares, Luna
WHEN Thursday
WHERE Diogenes
WHAT A bit of fortuitous lurking
WARNINGS Ares being a creeper

Ares wasn’t feeling his usual self. Ever since his bust-up with Melpomene, he’d been touchy and snappish, to the point that his usually very tolerant followers were starting to avoid him. What he needed was a drink.

Diogenes was fine. The books and mahogany weren’t his thing, but he didn’t have to pretend to be someone he wasn’t. He could occupy a table in the corner and watch the whole room, and slowly drink himself into a stupor, and not think about Melpomene being pregnant with his baby.

How had that even happened, anyway? He had no idea how women worked. She probably did it on purpose. Hadn’t she said that? She wanted his power to start a revolution. She had a tank kink she desperately needed to be played out. Not so long ago, that would have appealed, but since their fight… That desire for a more epic story to be played out had faded.

He’d been so distracted by her for weeks. It was time he focused back on other things. When was the last time he’d even spoken to Aphrodite? It was that thought in his head when he noticed the girl walk in, the one with all the tattoos, and something reawoke in his gut. He’d almost forgotten her, while he’d been reoccupied.

Almost.

Luna let him have his victory there, because maybe it would help. Besides, there was little use lying about it. "Of course I've been thinking about it," she said coldly. "You know you scare me. I'm smart enough to be scared of you."

God, she wished she hadn't finished her drink so quickly. She wished she had it in her hands. "The thing is," Luna said, considering his words, "if I fuck you, I think you'll intentionally kill me. Afterwards, during- I don't think there's anyway you let me walk away from it alive. Am I wrong to think that?"

"Isn't it more fun with the fear of death hanging over you?" Ares shrugged. Maybe he just wouldn't care if he did kill her. "On the other hand, I've fucked plenty of women who are still walking around. So maybe, if you're that worried about it, you help me get my original conquest back. She won't die."

He hadn't come close to approaching Makaria again since the symposium, because he was very slightly more wary of Hades than he was of Hermes. Hades had dark forces at his command that could make things very prickly for Ares. But that girl was such a sweet peach, if he had a second run at her, he wouldn't fail again.

"No," Luna said, sudden and firm at his request to fetch the goddess for him. Luna knew, logically, from what she'd read and what she knew, that Makaria was an ancient as any of them but... she'd seen the goddess that night. Seen the genuine confusion and innocence in her eyes, seen the fear in her body language. Luna wasn't about to help Ares hurt her, at the cost of her own life. Not a chance.

"I'm not collecting you someone else." She lifted her chin, all false bravado. "If you wanna fuck me, wanna hurt me... fine. Let's do this. You can put me in my place."

Ares raised his eyebrows at her. "So... you're offering yourself to me?" He sipped his drink thoughtfully. "So no shit from Hermes or Peitho or anyone else? You come to me nice and easy, and we make it happen." It certainly was less hassle for him, and he got what he wanted. She was still scared of him, regardless of if she came to him voluntarily or not. He could still make his point.

Fuck, this was going to happen. She was going to do this.

Luna took a deep unsteady breath and nodded. "As long as you don't kill me," she said, "then no one even has to know about it. Hell, I'll even tell them we talked and worked it out, so Hermes isn't gunning for you anymore."

Was that enough incentive for him to try and not have her die? Luna didn't even know. She was pretty sure if she died everyone would get over it in time - they had forever after all - and just be friends again.

"I don't kill you, and I don't have dumbshit Hermes on my case." Ares nodded approval of the plan. He supposed he could take a little more care than he might have otherwise. And if she was playing along, he might get to stretch it out a bit, enjoy himself.

"Alright then. We meet at a hotel. I have you for the night."

Luna closed her eyes for a moment as the visions of what he might do to her went rushing through her mind. She opened them and looked at him again, nodding quickly because she had to force herself to agree right now instead of bolting from the club. "And after that, we're done? I don't have to keep watching my back for you?"

And what would stop him from lying? If she did this. If she let him do whatever he wanted to her for a whole night, would he actually hold up his end of the bargain?

Ares gave a shrug and a nod of acquiescence. Not that anything would hold him to this bargain if he changed his mind. What was she going to do? Tell on him to Hermes?

He finished his drink and leaned back in his seat, looking her over. "Wear something sexy," he said, leering a little. "That latex number was hot."

The latex. Sure, why not? At least if he told her what to wear she didn't have to think about it.

"Any other requests?" Luna asked, her tone teetering between anger and defeat.

"Might wanna stretch beforehand," Ares said. He was enjoying this. He might actually get a good time out of it after all. "Limber up. Shit is gonna get wild. Give me your number. You need to let me know when you'll be there." He held up his phone to exchange numbers.

Ares was an idiot if he thought Luna, veteran fucktoy of the gods and literal porn actress, wasn't going to prepare her body for whatever onslaught he had in mind for her. And so if he'd hoped for a frightened reaction to any of that, the only one he got was the unimpressed expression as she forced herself not to roll her eyes.

Yeah, I get it, big guy. You're a beast, she thought angrily as she pulled out her phone and told him her number, putting his into her phone under the first name that came to mind: 'Rick'. She couldn't exactly have Ares' name flashing up on her phone.

"I'll need to talk to Peitho," Luna explained, putting her phone back away in her bag. "Ask for a night off. I don't know how soon it will be."

"Don't make me wait too long," Ares rumbled, a note of warning in his voice. He got to his feet. "But you don't have to look over your shoulder until then. You have my word. One last thing- a kiss before I go." He leaned down and took Luna's face in his hands to give her a firm, possessive kiss.

"Something to remember me by," he said with a leer. "I'll be seeing you." And he walked away.

Luna supposed she'd better get used to the taste of Ares on her lips, because it was only going to get worse soon enough. Once he was gone she dropped her gaze down to the table and let out a heavy breath, rubbing at the rope burns on her wrist.

She needed another drink.

Antigone had had a week of stress and worry, broken only by her lunch with Asterion a couple of days ago. How had she got to the point in her life, she wondered, where eating fries with a minotaur was legitimately the high point of her week?

She'd come to Diogenes so she could drink and write, sitting by herself in a booth, drinking gin and tonics and working on a stream of consciousness that was probably too messy to turn into anything publishable, if she was being honest.

If she was being really honest, she was only here because she couldn't handle being at home right now where the cut on Romeo's lip demanded of her why didn't you stop this. Because seeing it made Antigone despise herself for her inaction.

So when she turned her head when she saw a slim, tattooed woman walk past her booth, and saw Ares, right here, just over her shoulder, just a table away, she knew, already, what she had to do.

But first she listened, in absolute horror (but not a lot of surprise) at the scraps of their conversation she managed to catch. She couldn't hear everything, but the words threatening to rape me to death had stood out like a beacon, cutting through the louder conversation in the booth behind her.

As soon as Ares left, she moved, straight into the chair he'd been sitting in opposite the young woman. Fuck - she thought, in rising horror as she got closer - this woman was mortal. "Do you need help?"

Luna had been about to get up and re-drink herself when a stranger sat down across from her, almost making Luna flinch with surprise. But she covered it quickly, frowning in question at the dark haired woman who'd clearly seen or heard something of Luna's conversation with Ares.

Did Luna need help? Of course Luna needed help! But it was, unfortunately, not really help anyone could give her. So she plastered on one of her parented and trademarked easy smiles, one eyebrow quirked. "No," she said with a shake of her head. "Should I need help?"

Right. Well. That was apparently how people dealt with Ares.

Antigone gave her a pained and sympathetic smile, but it didn't reach her eyes, which were just solidly sad. "I'm sorry," Antigone said softly, shaking her head. "My mistake."

She pushed herself back to her feet with a grim kind of determination as the sadness solidified in her heart. "I'll clear that for you," she reached for the glass Ares had been drinking from, and dragged it off the table as she turned to leave too.

"Hey," Luna said, unable to escape the sadness on the woman's face. She waited for her to turn back and asked, "do you need help?"

The woman's question surprised her, and Antigone paused, looking back at her. The faintest smile touched her lips at Luna's kindness. "No," she said. Maybe they were all as bad as each other.

There was a saying, no man is an island, and maybe that was true and they were all connected, deep under the water.

Deep under the water that was full of women on liferafts, just floating, doing what they could to navigate the violent currents that flowed between all these goddamn islands. Each of them convinced it was too dangerous to reach out in case the act pulled them, or their would-be rescuer, into the deadly water.

Antigone wouldn't risk pulling anyone else down with her. Just like this woman didn't. Just like Romeo wouldn't.

"No," she repeated, and gave her another faint smile. "Stay inside, okay?" She didn't wait for another answer, she just took the glass, and left.
