Thomas had been jogging on his treadmill when the call came through. He almost didn't hear the ringtone. After stopping the treadmill and slinging his towel across his neck, he grabbed the phone, checked the caller ID, and answered it slightly breathlessly. "Hey, Mom! How are you doing?"
"Thomas."
His mother's tone caused Thomas' stomach to freeze and he sat down quickly as he found his knees had gone weak. "M-mom, what's wrong?" He felt the strong urge to go check on Jamie to make sure he was okay, even though he knew his son was in his room. "Are you alright? Do you need me to come get you?"
"No. No, I'm at the hospital. It's your father, Thomas. He's sick."
And he was suddenly glad he was sitting down. Thomas' father had always been strong and reassuring. The man wasn't as openly affectionate as his mother was, but Thomas knew William loved him. He had worked so hard for his family and Thomas was always thankful for that. He knew William had been having a bit of trouble getting around lately, but he had just assumed his father was a 60-year-old man who had worked at a physically demanding job for four decades. "How sick? Should I come over there?"
"Visiting hours are over. You can see him tomorrow." He could hear the upset in her voice and he knew there was more. "It's Huntington's, Thomas. Your father has Huntington's."
************
Thomas knocked on Jamie's door after spending a half an hour on the phone with his mother. He had had to listen to her cry, something he had only ever witnessed once before. He felt hollow and upset and he didn't really know how to tell his son this. "Jamie, we have to talk."
