Gregor took the show slowly, but brought out his pink bagpipes early on. He played a number of Muggle songs, including Fortunate Son for Jason and the pink contingent. For Angus, he played Who are you? and Micah got The World Turned Upside Down.

About an hour into the match he strapped on the broom-skates and did his figure skating routine, while Jason was lining up another penalty shot against Wendy Sloo. It was still early on, but they were the new crowd favorite. He even tried the hanging upside down part, but he had to hold his kilt down, so it wasn't as much of a success as an unexpected comedy moment. He was wearing his pink bagpipe underwear, and he had no idea if he'd flashed the crowd or not. Mascots couldn't go regimental, because the costume would chafe...

Gregor had been assigned certain breaks for longer matches and he made sure to take them. He wasn't going to miss the end of this match because of exhaustion.

During the break while Catapults' coach Rhodri Morgan was arguing with the referees about Winne's ejection, Gregor made his way to the broadcast booth, bagpipes under one arm and his magpie head under the other. For the press, it was not a completely unusual sight, but Gregor hoped the fans didn't see him headless in the booth.

Frances Cunningham gestured him over to the microphones.
Frances : Why, look who's joined us, Sean, it's our old friend Left Magpie!
Sean: Heya Lefty, heck of a match your Magpies are having today.
Lefty: Hello, Humans! Yes, we decided to bring scorers and Caerphilly decided to bring foulers!
Frances: It's certainly been a busy match in the Catapults goal area.
Lefty: If only they had some sort of giant wooden contraption for flinging the quaffle long distances. What are those called? It's on the tip of my tongue...
Sean: That would be a catapult, Lefty.
Lefty: If you say so, but based on what I'm seeing a catapult is not for firing a quaffle down field...
Frances: So, Lefty, I see you brought your pink bagpipes with you.
Lefty: I sure did! Do you want a wee tune? Do you want a pibroch? I think the union requires that you be allowed a pibroch at least every four hours.
Sean: Ah, no thank you, Lefty, we're broadcasting this to England and they write in if we play too much bagpipe music.
Lefty: Too much bagpipe? I don't even know what those words mean together.
Frances: Why are your bagpipes pink, Lefty?
Lefty: I know what those words mean! They mean, Frances Cunningham wants to change the subject. Isn't that right, Sean?
Sean: And for our fans, why are are you and some of the players wearing pink today?
Lefty: And Sean know when to dodge a question and stay happily married!
Lefty: But the Pink thing is very serious. You may not know this, but I'm a muggleborn magpie. Neither of my parents were talking birds. It's easy to see a magpie, or a witch or wizard, and assume they're just part of the community; you can't see a muggleborn and tell they didn't grow up with other talking magpies.

We want to recognize and celebrate the special individuals who have adapted and become significant parts of our society, despite starting 50 yards behind the leads and having to figure out the rules as we go along. They had to struggle to make something of themselves and they have done so well. Look how many of them are national team members...

We want to be seen, not to be invisible in our society. Every wizard who wears the neon pink is calling attention to themselves and saying "I am proud of what Muggleborns have done." It's such an uplifting message and, by not hiding who we are, or pretending to have Wizard ancestors, we don't see ourselves as the victims of the last war but rather as active participants in the new normality.

I think you're going to see a lot more pink, Frances, and I'm very happy about it.
Sean: Wow! If I'd known, I'd've worn pink.
Lefty: Say no more, Sean, I'll just pinkify your shirt!
Frances: That's great, Lefty, he looks better already. Well back on the pitch it looks like Coach Morgan has given up his protest of the ejection. We'll see what happens when Montrose is really let loose...

Lefty gets plenty of loud cheering from those in pink when he flies out with his pink bagpipes. Even more when he flashes the pink pants!

The kids love Lefty's pink bagpipes and broomskates, and at one point Ellie is perched on her Da's shoulders so she can get a better look as she cheers for an upside-down Magpie, giggling when he flashes some extra pink.

There is more giggling at 'talking magpies' in his interview they can listen to from the Montrose box's wireless. They already know what the pink is for (they asked why Jason was wearing it before) but listen to Lefty's explanation. In the end the girls agree that really Lefty and Jason look very nice in pink, it's good they picked that colour.

And silly english who hate bagpipes! Clearly they're not listening to Lefty play them!

Chuck is up in the press box, and oh boy did Montrose put on one hell of a game. Now she's got to, and will, remain unbiased in her report of the match but it's clear from her cheering now and again that she's a fan of Montrose, though it kind of helps that she's friends with a couple of the players. Given her Welsh grandmother you'd think she'd probably have cheer for Caerphilly... maybe if her grandmum hadn't actually played for the Harpies instead.

Even with all the matches she's seen in the season so far she's still surprised by the amount of fouls the refs are calling on the Catapults, and definitely makes a couple notes on that - particularly on the multiple fouls called on Winne and Threepwood. Good luck to any less scrupulous press who try to get a peak at her notes - Chuck has a weird blend of actual shorthand and her own made up for getting her notes down as quickly as possible.

Peggy is also taking notes, though she's not as picky about hers since by the time everyone else has to have their story in, hers will be published.

She's not a big fan of either team, though the face she makes when she sees Lex get hit suggests she's particularly bothered by that, and she looks satisfied when Winne is ejected.

Though she's on the bench for this match, Ada's spirits aren't the least bit dampened. She is clearly just as happy to support her team from the seats as she is when she's playing. Though even she starts to tire in watching the match when a few hours have already passed... she may have needed a little bit of a jolt awake.

Desmond was actually quite impressed with the Catapults' fouling. Less so, alas, with their scoring. When Bronwyn was ejected he took the time to excuse himself from the Catapults box and visit Montrose again. (But it's okay, Janine still has the Najafis to commiserate with!)

Pink Contingent
[info]neeples
2017-12-09 05:30 pm UTC (link)
Off in the stands, the bright pink group that started it all is harder to pick out today. Not because they're any less bright (if anything they're more) but because scattered through the stands there's more and more pink each match. They're no longer the only bright row of it.

They're seated more on the Montrose cheering side, Jason is the mastermind behind this after all, but they cheer for every good save Sloo pulls off. She's one of them after all and sporting some nice pink herself.

With no Jason, Aidan takes up more of the job of holding court (much better than Dawn doing it) and answering questions. Today people are more informed about what the pink is than in previous matches, there's been coverage after all. But they seem more eager to talk and more muggleborn approach them, including many wearing pink themselves. Aidan makes sure to complement them all and a few even ask for pictures with the group. Who doesn't want a group pic with famous quidditchers as they all sport a brilliant pink?

Justin was on the Montrose side, splitting his time between Ernie and the other muggleborns. He has various neon gel pens for the players to use to sign anything, though they write in black ink (sorry, they were all he could find with short notice). He has his planner and notebook with him and is scribbling down notes, particularly when someone says something he thinks is clever or important (there's a lot of that).

If Dawn is the fiery element to their movement, then Isla has emerged as something of ice queen. She sits among the crowd, but her gaze is cool and aloof. Those brave enough to approach her for questions, comments, or even autographs are met with polite interactions, but are- almost to a man- left a little cold. It's only if/when she might be paired with Dawn that she seems to thaw, becoming far more impassioned.

Of Monte, there is no sign, unfortunately. If asked, Isla will mutter darkly about Falcon's practice, and could probably be heard to tell Aidan that she wouldn't be surprised if they had kept her brother for a longer training session today just out of spite.

Maggie is here (with whoever) and shouting for a lot of the seven hours, mostly at the referee. Don't worry, though, because she takes regular walks up to and around the nosebleeds.

Whoever she's sitting with has steady access to protein bars and well-hidden firewhiskey. She's learned a few things.

There was a whole group from DOMGAS visiting the owner's boxes today: Desmond, Yasmin Najafi, and Morven Oglethorpe (and spouses). Janine and Yasmin both being Catapults fans, Des, Morven and Mr. Oglethorpe didn't try to budge them much, instead choosing to get up and visit the Montrose side when they were tired of sitting/things got too intense.

Over in the Montrose box, Morven (a lifelong Portree supporter) subjected everyone to an intense stare as if she still hasn't forgiven them for briefly employing her son.

Also, the first time visiting Montrose:
Morven: ...and my husband, of course. *gestures at Des on her left*
Actual Husband: Ahem.
Morven: Oh yes. *gestures at actual husband on her right*

If they stop by to say hi to the coach Merc will be in a good mood and very friendly even towards Morven (who he probably knows is a Portree fan) and will ask if she watched the last match of theirs. Quite something wasn't it? He had a good time watching at least.

Of course he won't comment on the lack of Janine or the Nafajis.

Merc is Very happy about this match. It was long but they endured, and the chasers didn't let up or slow down. Despite heavy fouling and the beaters apparently going harder than they have all season (they must've been pissed about his low opinion about them), they still come out with their best point difference of the year.

It's a long match though, which means he has plenty of time to give running commentary to his kids, go for a walk down to the medic tent,
maybe write up a break to do list, etc etc. But as soon as Lex goes down he's disappeared to the pitch and the medic tent.

When the match drags on, Ellie ends up napping for some of it and Ava pulls out the board game Snitch Snatcher and tries to get some of the reserves to play with her (and will try to get mama and Da too but Da is distracted or away at the medic tent).

(She's sorry whoever ends up playing as Slytherin)

Kal is obviously there and in the team box, looking forward to seeing her current team playing her former team. She does have to catch herself a few times from cheering for those Catapults that she considers friends—but really, they're having such a crap game that it's not that hard.

She's far more...loud this match than anyone would have ever seen her. She can't help the cheering and shouting at the ref for bad calls (or missed calls) or shouting at the Catapults for each and every one of their fouls.

Then when Lex goes down, she gets extra quiet.
