I may have done something monumentally stupid, but even after waiting and thinking about it, I do not regret it yet.

She's a beater and sometimes she needs a bat or a bludger to crack through her thick skull.

Now you are just contradicting yourself

What she needs is to face the consequences of her actions.

The wedding? She can't really avoid those consequences forever.

She doesn't want to cause trouble for the team by taking, or not taking, Micah's name. We passed trouble long ago.

She's got to make her own decision about that.

Which is what I told her. Numerous times.

Then, I'm afraid, I lost my temper.

It sounds as though she was being provoking.

I should have known better and then I turned it personal.

If she's deliberately yanking your chain, or even not so deliberately, it's understandable that you'd be angry. It's no secret we run this family like a business and it's hard to separate the personal side of things from the Macmillan interests. It's one of the reasons I moved to the Ministry.

If Lex is being a brat, we take it to Mum. What happens when you behave like a five-year-old is Mum spanks you. Your job is to protect her but also the team. She's part of the team and as long as she wants the good parts of being part of the family, she has to live with the hard parts too. It's not all privileges. Sometimes it's giving up what you want for the good of everyone else. This is a time when she has to give things up, like being publicly angry about McEwan being an arse.

I was happy where I was, I did not want any of this, much to Mother's everlasting disappointment, I'm sure.

She was not publicly angry, just with me. It does not need to go to Mother yet.

You shouldn't have to put up with her treating you that way in private either.

She told me that what I was doing was unacceptable but you notice I'm going to do it my way. Same should go for you.

I never said I would not do my job.

I am angry, yes, but at the same time I do not want involve Mother at this time, both because Mother will assume I will not be capable of handling the PR responsibilities and our sister will assume that I will run to Mother at the first hint confrontation between her and I.

All fair. I'm saying Lex shouldn't treat you that way, not that you need Mum, or me, to referee it.

I think you can handle it or I wouldn't have said I thought you could. I didn't think Lex would be making it deliberately harder, though.

Are you angry just about this or about the whole thing?

Like you pointed out above, to be part of this family, you have to give up what you want for the good of the whole. Do I resent this fact? Certainly, but I am hardly in a position to give up the privileges of the Macmillians. I can't do that to Jamie or the children.

Doesn't mean I'm not pissed at MG for putting me in the position where it's come up, though. And Lex is being a sight more provoking than MG.

She will not see that, however. To borrow her turn of phrase, it would be 'unacceptable.'

I really should not complain. I have a wonderful family. A loving husband. Family and friends who are willing to help with the children when the Team takes my attention. Many do not even have that.

You've taken a lot on. Listening to you complain about it is the least I can do. I appreciate what you're doing even if Lex doesn't.

And I thank you for listening, but the fact remains that in the scheme of the universe I am quite lucky.

We both are, and so is Lex. I haven't forgot that things could have turned out very differently for all of us.

And you're welcome.

I'm not the boss but if you need to skive off in my flat, it's yours. I'll go stay with Fraser.

It wouldn't kill Jamie to have the kids for a day and anyway Fraser and I could help with the boys. But you do what you need to and we'll handle the rest.
