IC/OOC - Who's Ready to Meet Montrose's New PR Guy?

internalmemo
Montrose Magpies Team PR Office
2 March 2000

TO: Montrose Staff and Players

FROM: Montrose Magpies Team Office

SUBJECT: Getting to Know You!
Hello, Magpies!

No doubt, you have seen a new face around the offices, so I thought I'd send out a memo to briefly introduce myself. My name is Alex Winters, and I'll be taking over the Public Relations position from Aureliana effective immediately. She's agreed to stay on for a brief time as we transition her work to me, and I'm very excited to get started here! I'm sure all of you have appreciated the hard work she put in during the interim.

A little about me: I was born in Scotland, but moved to America when I was really little, and grew up in Seattle, WA. I went to Ilvermorny- Go, Horned Serpents!- and then interned for a marketing firm in Manhattan before being hired on full time. This was my primary background- international corporate accounts- for nearly ten years, when I felt it was time for a change.

But I'm not here to bore you with the details! I'd really like to get to know everyone here, but I know that everyone is busy with three upcoming matches this month, so I'm asking if you could please find the time to either schedule a time or just stop by my office for a brief 5-10 minute chat so I can get to know the team a little better.

If you find you don't have time, or small talk just really isn't your thing, I've attached a brief form that includes some talking points you can also use if you wish. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you, and can't wait to see the Unbeatable Magpies in action again!

Ada smiled and shook the other man's hand. "Bonjour, Monsieur Winters. Je vais bien, merci," she replied, having released his hand. There was a laughing smile on her lips when he stated that that was about the extent of his French. "Well, those are important questions, but lucky for you my English is as good as it is."

Alex laughed easily. "Definitely makes my job a little easier, though I understand a little more than I speak. Might be kind of the opposite for English, however." He indicated a chair. "Please, sit! Can I get you anything? Water? Tea? While you're here, do you mind terribly telling me a bit about what brought you to Montrose?"

She chuckled before sitting down in the chair he indicated. Ada shook her head. "No, I'm alright, thank you." The question he asked though made her brow furrow slightly, because she was fairly certain the reason was pretty well known by now and if it wasn't she would've thought it was likely on file somewhere. "Well, they were one of the few teams willing to give me a try out when I moved here," she replied. "A decade of being a reserve Keeper doesn't exactly inspire a lot of teams to take a chance."

Open confusion knit Alex's brows together as he took the seat opposite of her, his expression oddly mirroring her own. "I still don't get the reserve system in the BIL. You have these great players who are just sitting there for these seventy hour matches, and you don't use them? It makes no sense, but, hey, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being in the reserve position. It's still professional Quidditch, after all, and- since you tried out- it means you made the team based on your own merits. I've seen your stats from this season, and they've been very impressive."

He paused from his impromptu cheerleading session to gather his thoughts again, and shot Ada an apologetic smile. "Sorry, sometimes I get caught up in things. But we were talking about you! How do you feel about your position in the team? Are there charities or events you'd like to see them involved in, or things you might want to distance yourself from?"

Ada nodded in agreement. It was something that had, and still, baffled her. "Unfortunately, the BIL still doesn't seem to have progressed much in terms of how they use reserves. I mean, if during a match a player is injured enough to be brought off play then teams should be allowed to play the reserve. But apparently that's too forward-thinking and logical for them apparently," she commented, her tone becoming slightly heated towards the end. Ada flushed slightly at the compliment. "Thank you..."

"No apology necessary, as you can see I get a bit... well, I usually don't speak up about it since for some it's not a popular opinion but when the subject comes up," she said, giving him a wry smile. "It's good, I don't mind being a reserve - I'm not in it for having the pressure or presumed lifestyle of a starter so I've no complaints; and the team has been very welcoming. At this point I'm not sure since I'm still learning for myself what's out there. I've offered to help out CLAMS with their Quidditch demonstration for kids, and I've been thinking of wanting to actually help with Uplift more than I actually have done." Ada hadn't really done anything at all yet, and admittedly felt bad considering it was basically run by her teammate who happened to be one of her partner's best friends... and well, she hadn't done anything to support any of that.

The corner of his mouth edged up into an understanding smirk as Ada displayed the same passion against the outdated reserve rules that he felt. It was refreshing to find someone else in this country that shared his opinion. Another thing that Alex found that he enjoyed about the witch was her candor. "I can certainly work on getting more information about other charity and volunteer organizations, or work with Dani to get it to you, if that's an avenue you'd like to explore. I'm also working that CLAMS event, but mostly from the ground. I love the game, but should probably leave it to the professionals."

Uplift was the buzz around here, especially in light of Jason's recent request. It was already on his radar, but he made an additional note to follow up with the Chaser and management about the possibility of official team sponsorship of the group. "I'm sure Jason appreciates all the support he can get, and it's a great cause. Is there anything my office can do for you to help further your involvement?"

"That'd be great, thank you," she said, appreciating the offer. Ada was sure that wanting to help more with Uplift, and having already talked with Maddie about doing more with Clams, would lead to other avenues but she still appreciated the offer of help.

"Well, Jason's not just a teammate but he's been a good friend since I moved her - although I think that has at least a little to do with he and my partner being good friends already," she responded, with a slightly amused smile. She paused for a moment as she thought over her answer. "I think I'm fine with what's happening for now, and... well, I'm not sure how much you know but Alasdair Buchanan and I are engaged and planning to get married in June. So it's probably better for my sanity if I try to not to take on much more, in terms of involvement or more charities, for the time being."

"Congratulations," Alex said with a genuine smile. Buchanan- starting Chaser for Portree. Not new news, at least to him, but still... Interesting. "I have to ask, what kind of coverage do you feel comfortable with when it comes to your wedding? Two Quidditch players from directly rival teams getting married- I doubt you'll be able to keep the press away entirely. Anything I can do for you there?"

"Thank you," she said with a bright smile. It was hard not to smile when it came to thinking about the wedding... well, about all the parts that weren't stressing about the planning anyway.

"We've talked about it with Gwen Miracle, when the subject came up after the press release was made of our engagement, already that we don't want any press photographers at the wedding but we're willing to release one or two carefully chosen photos afterwards," she replied. When it had been suggested Ada had had no worries about agreeing to the idea; for one, there was the privacy factor; and two, she wanted to be able to enjoy their day without having a camera in her face every minute or so. "There is the slight issue, of course, if guests are wanting to take their own photos - even if everyone in them consents to it... that's not something Alasdair and I have really discussed yet though. I guess if any help is needed it's mostly just trying to ensure our privacy is respected as much as possible on the day and afterwards for a time?"

"Mm, yeah, that's a tough call." Alex smiled slowly, teasing. "Best to include an NDA with those invites, don't you think? Don't forget to include the liable clause. Maybe have a solicitor have a look before you send out the Save the Date cards."

He shook his head at himself, and chuckled low. "Of course I'll do anything I can do to help your day go as smoothly and wonderfully as I can. How's that planning going, anyway? Have you started having stress dreams yet? I've made a few contacts with some high end chefs, caterers and photographers in the UK over the years, so let me know if you need a list or if you'd like me to put you in touch with any of them."

"Oh, sure, of course. Perhaps even have the solicitor there on the day to make sure nothing goes wrong?" she suggested, looking at him with a raised eyebrow.

Ada chuckled slightly. "Thank you, that would certainly be appreciated. It's going well enough so far. We've been taking the planning slowly and not rushing things. So no crazy stress dreams as of yet." Alasdair and herself hadn't really discussed catering yet... at least not beyond what kind of cake they were wanting. Still it couldn't hurt to have a possible list, right? "A list would be great, thank you. It's something I'd need to talk about with Alasdair first," she replied. "Though later on if we decided to use any of them, maybe you could put us in touch with them then?"

"Perfect Hollywood wedding," Alex said, maintaining the joke with the ghost of a smirk, "except you'd have to cave on your stance on the paparazzi. Nothing says marital bliss quite like having your lawyer present and having the public know the intimate details of your special day."

He smiled at Ada again. "Consider me at your disposal. Anything else I can help you with, or anything you'd like to know from me?"

Ada couldn't maintain her composure any longer and gave in to chuckling at how ridiculous it sounded before shaking her head.

"Thank you," she said with a small smile. She thought about it for a second before shaking her head in the negative. "No, I can't think of anything else for either at the moment. Besides you've probably a number of other people to see, and I should probably let you get to that."

"Thank you," Alex said, rising again and offering his hand once more. "It's been a pleasure. Please feel free to swing by anytime. I'd like to meet Alasdair at some point if I can- does he ever come to your games?"

Ada rose a second after and reached over to shake his hand. "Of course. Mmhmm, sometimes. At least that is we both try to attend each other's games when we can manage it and it doesn't conflict with anything else."
