IC/OOC - Who's Ready to Meet Montrose's New PR Guy?

internalmemo
Montrose Magpies Team PR Office
2 March 2000

TO: Montrose Staff and Players

FROM: Montrose Magpies Team Office

SUBJECT: Getting to Know You!
Hello, Magpies!

No doubt, you have seen a new face around the offices, so I thought I'd send out a memo to briefly introduce myself. My name is Alex Winters, and I'll be taking over the Public Relations position from Aureliana effective immediately. She's agreed to stay on for a brief time as we transition her work to me, and I'm very excited to get started here! I'm sure all of you have appreciated the hard work she put in during the interim.

A little about me: I was born in Scotland, but moved to America when I was really little, and grew up in Seattle, WA. I went to Ilvermorny- Go, Horned Serpents!- and then interned for a marketing firm in Manhattan before being hired on full time. This was my primary background- international corporate accounts- for nearly ten years, when I felt it was time for a change.

But I'm not here to bore you with the details! I'd really like to get to know everyone here, but I know that everyone is busy with three upcoming matches this month, so I'm asking if you could please find the time to either schedule a time or just stop by my office for a brief 5-10 minute chat so I can get to know the team a little better.

If you find you don't have time, or small talk just really isn't your thing, I've attached a brief form that includes some talking points you can also use if you wish. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you, and can't wait to see the Unbeatable Magpies in action again!

"I never got to see you play in Vratsa, but I heard great things, and you were fantastic against Puddlemere. I can't imagine having to play Seeker like that, but now I guess you can add it to your résumé." Alex considered Georgi for a moment, but then smiled again. "So, is there anything my office can do for you while you're on the team? Or anything I can do to help your transition after the season ends?"

Georgi ducked his head, a little pink as usual at the praise. "Thank you. Now the only position I haven't played in a professional match is Chaser. Maybe one time I'll do that." He smiled to show it was only a joke, but it was brief. He was very serious as he added, "There is something you can help with, if I may ask. You know this Muggleborn movement? Uplift and pink?"

Alex chuckled; he already liked Georgi immensely, and thought it was a shame that he didn't seem to be planning to stay on after the season. He watched the Beater's expression change with interest, wondering about it until Georgi brought up what Alex was already coming to think of as the team's pet project. "I do, yes! Jason's told me a lot about it. What can I do for you?"

"Okay. I'm not Muggleborn. Actually, I'm pureblood, and my family is very old-fashioned. They don't associate with Muggleborns and squibs." Georgi looked down at his hands, curled together in his lap. He'd been thinking of nothing but this ever since his talk with Ernie, trying to think of what he could do to stand up for Jason and his group. "But I don't believe like my family does, and I want to say that out loud. If you think it's okay, I want to publish a letter in the newspaper to tell other people from families like mine why I am supporting the Uplift." He peeked up at Alex. "Do you think this is all right? And if it's okay, maybe you can look at this letter when I've written it and fix anything that's wrong. You know, English is not my best language."

He watched Georgi very carefully, but- by the end- Alex was smiling softly at the transplanted Beater. "I think that's a fantastic idea, and I would be proud and honored to go over whatever it is you choose to write. I can't really imagine the strength of character it took for you to examine your beliefs and to forge new ones. It's extremely admirable. We'll make sure your letter says everything you want it to, and I'll have it put in all the right hands."

Georgi nodded seriously, not quite able to smile back. He was anxious about the consequences of his decision, on edge waiting to hear back from his parents, but he was well trained in not letting his nerves show. "Thank you for your help," he answered. "I'll write this soon. My -- a visitor from Bulgaria is coming here soon and I'll be busy, but I'll tell you when it's ready."

He took a deep breath. "One more thing I should tell you. I told Aureliana already last month, because in case it goes into the gossip pages I didn't want to make it hard for her. So I'll tell you, too, but I haven't told Coach or Shona or the team yet. It's about the Urquhart family, who own the Pride of Portree team. Their family does business with my family, and I am courting Graham Urquhart's daughter, Peggy. It's not a secret, but... I didn't tell most of my friends here or the team because I don't know if they will understand it."

The only thing that betrayed Alex's surprise was the very slight widening of his eyes, but that was tempered with confusion, because maybe he was misunderstanding what the Beater meant. Was everything tied back to Portree with this group? O, what a tangled web we weave. "'Courting'? Sorry, is this something business related, or...?"

Georgi nodded, a little surprised Alex wasn't familiar with the term. "Yeah, sorry, maybe you call it something different in America. I mean we are spending time together with approval from our families, to see if we want to be married. What do you call that?"

Alex tried to keep the dawning comprehension from his face, but only just managed it. Ah. "We...call it dating," he said slowly. "You date someone to get to know them, find out if you're compatible, if it's someone you want to spend a long time with. The idea of courtship hasn't been around in America since probably the beginning of the 20th century- even in the magical crowd. But enough with that history lesson. Is there a reason why you're not telling Merc, Shona or your teammates about this, beyond misunderstandings such as this? Are you afraid it might be viewed as some kind of conflict of interest?"
