IC/OOC - Who's Ready to Meet Montrose's New PR Guy?

internalmemo
Montrose Magpies Team PR Office
2 March 2000

TO: Montrose Staff and Players

FROM: Montrose Magpies Team Office

SUBJECT: Getting to Know You!
Hello, Magpies!

No doubt, you have seen a new face around the offices, so I thought I'd send out a memo to briefly introduce myself. My name is Alex Winters, and I'll be taking over the Public Relations position from Aureliana effective immediately. She's agreed to stay on for a brief time as we transition her work to me, and I'm very excited to get started here! I'm sure all of you have appreciated the hard work she put in during the interim.

A little about me: I was born in Scotland, but moved to America when I was really little, and grew up in Seattle, WA. I went to Ilvermorny- Go, Horned Serpents!- and then interned for a marketing firm in Manhattan before being hired on full time. This was my primary background- international corporate accounts- for nearly ten years, when I felt it was time for a change.

But I'm not here to bore you with the details! I'd really like to get to know everyone here, but I know that everyone is busy with three upcoming matches this month, so I'm asking if you could please find the time to either schedule a time or just stop by my office for a brief 5-10 minute chat so I can get to know the team a little better.

If you find you don't have time, or small talk just really isn't your thing, I've attached a brief form that includes some talking points you can also use if you wish. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you, and can't wait to see the Unbeatable Magpies in action again!

Alex's unrestrained grin at seeing Roger froze a bit and turned into a look of concern as the Chaser fumbled with the door. He was out of his seat in a second, and flicked his wand toward Roger's bag, moving it to one side so it wouldn't be stepped on. "You okay there?" he pulled the door open the rest of the way and craned his neck to check the other wizard's arm for any visible signs of injury. "Long day at practice? Either that, or I've clearly installed an attack door. Sorry about that."

The grin was as effective as a full broadside and Roger, dazed momentarily by that and his own clumsiness, tried to grasp at words to formulate a sensible answer. Unfortunately he didn't succeed. "Forgot how big I was," he let out a laugh at his own ridiculousness and waved away the apology and concern. "I'm fine. Practice was also fine and your door is undamaged so that's good. How are you?"

An inelegant snort of laughter left Alex before he could stop it. He had enough reserves of restraint that he didn't react further to that, given that most of the time it would have resulted in him laughing even harder. "Spatial awareness is overrated anyway," he said with a dismissive shake of his head, "and doors can be replaced. Pretty sure I'd be fired if I'd broken you right out of the gate. I'm good! Just trying to get into the swing of things around here. So, what can I do for you, Roger? Or, rather, what can my office do for you? Are there avenues within the team you haven't explored yet?"

The snort made him grin, that was definitely not Cecil-like. He was keeping track of the differences between the two, clinging to the hope that it may stop him behaving quite so stupidly around Alex. "I have no problem with it in the air, just on land," the Chaser admitted quietly. Sometimes he genuinely felt he should have been a bird rather than a human. "Yes, you'd have been out of here pronto." His smile was teasing as he spoke and he ventured further into the office.

"I'm not sure what else I can do for the team other than Chase." Ro paused, running into the same problem he had with the form. "But I'll be wearing pink for Uplift at the next match. I should probably tell you that. In case anyone asks."

Alex was rather forcibly reminded of his recent journal exchange in the face of that brilliant smile and Roger's response. Dammit, Maggie. He had to believe, for the sake of his professional pride, that he hadn't been staring overlong, but he was pretty damn great at lying to people, himself included.

Uplift! Uplift was good and safe and business. He was here to do his job, for fuck's sake. Dammit, Maggie. "That's great! It's a fantastic cause. Are you looking to get more active in the movement, or any other charities? I've had a few ideas that I'd like to bounce off the team regarding community outreach and fundraisers, but I'd love to hear any suggestions or inspirations you might have."

If Alex was staring, Roger didn't really pay it much mind, after all he had almost fallen into the office. The office he was now thoroughly exploring, checking the view from the window, picking up a Biro from the corner of the desk and studying it. Anything to avoid looking at Cecil Alex's face too long, because it was rude to stare.

"It is!" Ro's smile brightened at the positive response, "I've been meaning to show my support sooner, but I wasn't 100% sure I should at first, being halfblood, but Dad's muggleborn, so I've half an idea of how things were for them during ... everything." He took a breath to slow the pace down, "what sorts of ideas do you have?"

The Chaser seemed restless, and Alex honestly wasn't sure if this was just a natural response to meeting someone new, or if it was just him. He hadn't really noticed anything when they'd had their coffee date get together, but then again Alex had been completely immersed in his discussion about hockey and the indisputable superiority of the New York Rangers- despite a lacklustre season this far (no need to get into that). It was very possible that Roger had been that, well, squirrelly then too.

That smile was dangerous, but he knew a good face for print. Already, lists were forming in his head of potential sponsorships. Best to put a pin in that, though; he wasn't Roger's rep, he was the team's. Still, would it hurt if they collaborated after hours? Wouldn't be a bad idea to check the terms of his employment agreement again, just to make sure.

Alex nodded as he was given a bit of family history, and recalled seeing something about the Chaser's involvement in the war. He had zero frame of reference, but didn't envy the experience in the slightest.

However, he was pulled out of his own thoughts at Roger's query, and it was his turn to smile awkwardly. "Well, I'm not sure about the logistics, but I thought it might be fun or beneficial to have some kind of clinic or Montrose day at your Hogearts, like CLAMS does for the younger kids. Things like that, get the team more involved with the larger community."

Stop acting twitchy... He's noticed...

Setting the Biro down carefully, the former Ravenclaw pulled himself together and turned his gaze to settle on Alex. He felt safe enough to look at him while the other wizard appeared to be lost in his own thoughts momentarily. Ro noted again all the striking similarities between Alex and Cecil, feeling an attraction he immediately felt guilty for.

Look but don't touch. You're with Rafael...

The awkward smile didn't make things easier. "That actually sounds like a great idea. I know I would have enjoyed having a team visit while I was there."

"I have no idea if it's even feasible, since, y'know, never been to Hogwarts, but I'm pretty sure this is the team with the best inroads to the school to begin with, so who knows." Alex shrugged a shoulder, then smiled apologetically after b at his watch. "I'm sorry, I'm probably keeping you from going home. I'm sure we'll get to talk more in the coming days, and my office is always open if you want to swing by for whatever reason."

"Well we have the McGonagall connection. I think some of the faculty might still remember me." Roger grinned, bending to retrieve his bag from the floor, before hitching it over his shoulder. "Ditto. I'm sure you want to be getting home too. Thanks, I'm sure you'll see me around." Crossing to the door he opened it fully this time, pausing a moment, "I'm glad you got the job. See you."

He managed to leave the room in a much calmer manner than he'd entered it.
