Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Leanne and Roger
When: Tonight, around 7pm
Where: Roger's house
What: Surprise Food Delivery

Leanne made mac and cheese from scratch, and put little cut pieces of hot dogs in it. It looked delicious, actually, which surprised her immensely. She wasn't really used to succeeding in her cooking. But this was for an adorable little boy--and apparently was his favorite. She packed the meal up; the mac and cheese dish, a tossed salad, some apple juice, store-bought cookies and a bottle of wine, and headed out the door.

Leanne found Roger's home address in his case file. It was completely against protocol for her to snatch it, but she was cleared for that kind of information. It wasn't like she was stalking him, or anything.

She walked up to his front door and knocked, hoping she wasn't too late for Brighton's bedtime.

"White." She was only planning on one glass, anyway. She had to apparate home. Easiest to do when not drunk. "But Apple juice for Brighton."

Leanne stepped to the counter and started to unpack the dinner. She held the wine out to him, then set about dishing them all up some food.

He poured out two glasses of white wine and then a tall glass of apple juice. Brighton climbed up into his chair and decided it was too quiet in the room. "Did you make this?"

Leanne gave a little nod. "Yes, I did. So I hope that you'll tell me you like it, even if you don't." She said, breaking into a little grin and giving him a wink.

"I heard that this is your favorite." She added, scooping some mac and cheese (with hot dog bits) onto a plate for him. "But, well, it doesn't have all the nutrition a growing boy needs, right? So you have to have a little salad, too." She grinned.

"I'm not a rabbit," Brighton said, all too seriously.

"You'll eat the salad because she made it for you," Roger scolded.

Leanne coughed to hide a laugh at Brighton's words. She swallowed, then dished up a little of the "rabbit food"...

"It's good for you." She said, giving Roger a smile. "And I think you'll like it. I made the dressing myself."

"You know how to make salad dressing? I stick to the basics. Eggs. Pancakes. Burgers." Roger was impressed, but he'd reserve judgment until he tasted it.

"Well, sort of. I followed the recipe in the book Mum gave me. My aunt Thalia, though, she's amazing in the kitchen. I sort of wish I was more like her. She took a pumpkin this one time, stuffed it with lamb, garlic, mint, and onions, and..." She paused, then slid a plate in front of Brighton.

"Well, it sounds disgusting, but it was heavenly."

"Mint onions?" Brighton made a face as he picked up his fork, "You take mints so you don't smell like onions."

Roger laughed. "Well, he has a point."

Leanne laughed, too. "That's true. I don't know why it was so delicious, but it was." She slid a plate in front of Roger, too.

"She used to make the most amazing pumpkin, chocolate chip cookies." Leanne said with a bit of a sigh. "No mint in those, though."

"That sounds bloody fan-tas-tic," Roger commented. Pumpkin chocolate really sounded like heaven to him right now.

Roger and Brighton both chowed down with the same vigor, leaning over their plates like mirror images, man and boy.

Leanne ate with them, glancing between the others, grinning at how cute they looked.

She finished her wine with her meal, then dug into the bag for the cookies. They weren't her aunt's amazing pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, but they were frosted sugar cookies. They looked delicious.

"Do you like it?" She asked, looking to Brighton first, then to Roger.

Brighton just nodded, because his dad taught him never to talk with his mouth full. He was almost done and covered in cheese.

"It's great," Roger said, before washing it down with a gulp of wine.

Leanne couldn't stop grinning. She was so very happy that the guys had enjoyed her cooking. She wasn't the best cook in the world, and she'd taken extra care to make something good tonight.

She set the cookies out on a plate, then refilled all of their glasses before sitting back down.

"I know I should have owled." She said to Roger, apologetically.

"It's fine, really. I was just crashing after work." Roger was relieved not to have cooked.

"This is better than a ketchup sandwich," Brighton said. Roger laughed and threw in quickly, "He wanted a ketchup sandwich once, I've never fed him that for dinner."

"I'm glad I could help." Leanne gave him a quick smile before turning her attention back to his son.

Leanne gave a playful 'blech!' sound and then laughed. "I can't imagine a ketchup sandwich." She said, turning her attentions to Brighton. This certainly beat having dinner at home by herself. "Was it gross?" She asked, reaching for a cookie.

"It had too much ketchup." He picked up a cookie and took a big bite. Too big a bite, really. His cheeks puffed out like a chipmunks as he chewed.

His chipmunk cheeks made Leanne's grin spread even wider. She was glad he enjoyed it.

"I only like ketchup on hot dogs." She said, then shrugged softly. "When they're not in mac and cheese, obviously."

"Ketchup would ruin the cheesiness, I'd think," Roger said with a smirk. He finished off his glass of wine, reached to pour another, and stopped.

"Yeah, ketchup's too sweet, I think." Leanne agreed. "It'd be like putting a cookie in there. Yuck!" She grinned softly, then took another bite from her cookie and chewed. She watched Roger's hand as it reached for the bottle then stopped.

"What time is it?" Brighton asked, looking nervous.

"Eight-fifteen. Almost your bed time. Finish that cookie and go brush your teeth."

Leanne gave Brighton an apologetic look, but stayed quiet. Far be it from her to get between him and his father.

She finished her glass of wine and set it back down on the table, then stood when Brighton did and moved to wash the dishes in the sink.

Roger watched to make sure Brighton was actually going to the sink to brush his teeth. He was at that age where kids put more effort into pretending to do the hygienic task than it would actually take to perform it.

"Thank you for dinner, Leanne."

"Sure." Leanne gave him a grin over her shoulder as she continued washing the dishes. She set them in the dish rack one by one as she finished cleaning them.

"Honestly, I didn't want to eat alone." She was only half-kidding. "I figured making dinner for you two was a great way to invite myself and have some dinner companions."

"Letting you in was a great excuse not to cook," he smirked. Still, he wondered why she'd chosen him to cook for. Didn't she have closer friends?

Not that she wasn't in love with, or who weren't pairing off and leaving her alone. She finished cleaning the dishes, and turned to face him, wiping her hands on a towel.

"Well, if that's all it takes, I'll come around more often." She gave him a smile.
