Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Leanne and Roger
When: Tonight, around 7pm
Where: Roger's house
What: Surprise Food Delivery

Leanne made mac and cheese from scratch, and put little cut pieces of hot dogs in it. It looked delicious, actually, which surprised her immensely. She wasn't really used to succeeding in her cooking. But this was for an adorable little boy--and apparently was his favorite. She packed the meal up; the mac and cheese dish, a tossed salad, some apple juice, store-bought cookies and a bottle of wine, and headed out the door.

Leanne found Roger's home address in his case file. It was completely against protocol for her to snatch it, but she was cleared for that kind of information. It wasn't like she was stalking him, or anything.

She walked up to his front door and knocked, hoping she wasn't too late for Brighton's bedtime.

"Or twice as smart." Roger touched his own nose. "See, they're just jealous because they're boys, and we're inherently stupid."

"See, that's what I shoulda said." Leanne said, giving him a grin. "But they were a lot bigger than me, and able to hold me down and tickle me until I wet myself." Her cheeks flushed. Probably shouldn't have said that.

Roger laughed. "I'm sorry. I'm sure that was scarring but--" he held his side, "You have to see that's a little bit funny."

Leanne was bright red, but she was grinning. "I know, I know. It's funny now." She gave a soft chuckle. "I got 'em back, though. One summer when we were camping on the Isle of Skye, I licked all the powdered sugar off of their donuts and replaced it with corn starch after Auntie Sydney finished making them."

He laughed harder, trying to be quiet so he wouldn't wake Brighton. "That's brilliant. I never would've even thought to do that." He put his hand on her shoulder as if holding onto her might stabilize him, but he couldn't stop laughing.

Leanne gave a laugh, remembering the looks on their faces. "Terence was half-way through his before he realized how awful it tasted! It was priceless. Boy, did that start a prank war." She was grinning softly. Thinking about her family always made her feel better. Not that she was feeling bad. She felt great, actually. The wine must've been making her warm and happy.

"I can't say I ever had any close cousins like that. Nobody near my age." Roger had turned out remarkably social for being very much an only child and grandchild for most of his life. He had an Aunt who had a daughter now, but she was far younger than his mother, but not young enough to be considered Roger's generation and her daughter was too young to be Roger's peer too.

"Oh, I was dead in the middle. Mostly. I have so many cousins and aunts and uncles that I can nearly lose count." She gave a little shrug, then lifted her wine glass for a sip. "Does Brighton have cousins, aunts and uncles?"

"o, not really. Julie and I were only children. He's got his grandmums. That's it." Brighton mostly hung out with Lisa and Roger, so he was a bit wise and sassy.

"Does he go to many playgroups?" Leanne asked, curiously. She imagined that if/when she had a child, she'd take him/her on all kinds of playdates. "Or is he in school already?"

"His grandmum takes him to one. She watches him while I'm working." Julie's mom. She was determined to stay in Brighton's life, which Roger was grateful for.

"That's really wonderful." Leanne said, grinning softly. The conversation felt like it was getting a bit personal and a bit serious for Roger, and Leanne didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable. She started babbling. "I'm pretty close with my grandmothers, too. Grandma MacFusty has twelve dogs. TWELVE. Can you believe it? I made the mistake of dogsitting for her once. I have no idea how she does it. She feeds them three times each day, and grooms six every other day. She's retired, though. It's all she does."

"Twelve dogs? I've heard of crazy cat ladies..." Roger scratched the tip of his nose. "But never crazy dog ladies."

"She's insane." Leanne said, though she was grinning. She lifted her glass for a sip, and it was empty. Hmm. Have another, or get ready to go?

Roger looked at the wine bottle. He knew he shouldn't have any more. He'd already had more than he'd planned. "You can take that home or I'll sleep too hard tonight," he said. He didn't even want it in the house to tempt him.

"We could save it for next time." Leanne offered, reaching over to put the cork in it. She didn't need any more, or she'd babble even worse.

"We could," he nodded. "How about you bring it back. Then I won't be tempted to finish it on you." Or get drunk and shag his babysitter. Roger was still anxious about how badly he'd botched that one.

"Oh, sure." Leanne wondered if he didn't keep alcohol in the house because of Brighton. "Or I'll take it home and finish it off." Though, that led to proclamations of love for her best friend.

"We probably should call it a night. I dunno 'bout you, but I have to work on Fridays." He dragged himself to the hallway to walk her out.

Leanne nodded. "Yeah, I should get some sleep." She collected the last of her things really quickly, then followed him out into the hall.

"Thanks for having me over. Even though I invited myself." She said, grinning sheepishly.

Roger, feeling fuzzy and affectionate, pulled her in for a hug and kissed her cheek. "Thank you, really. I don't socialize enough these days," at least not in healthy ways.

Leanne broke into a grin, and let herself be pulled into a hug. It felt kinda nice--like getting a hug from one of her older cousins.

"Me, either. I sort of lost my best friend, so..." She gave a gentle shrug.

Roger looked confused, "Did someone die that I didn't hear about?" Wait, wasn't she always hanging around with Katie Bell?

"No, no, I just messed things up between us." Leanne said. She shook her head a little, taking a step toward the door. "It's a long story."

A long story she didn't want to get into. Roger understood. Roger opened the door for her. "Looks like it's been raining while you were here."
