Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Ron & Hermione
What: Their auction date
Where: Quidditch museum
When: Saturday, beginning at 6

Ron wasn't sure what had made him suggest going to the Quidditch museum on a date, except that it sounded like the kind of thing that both he and Hermione could reasonably enjoy. At first, he'd thought of taking her to play Quidditch, but something told him that would make the whole thing even more of a disaster than it already was. And then he'd remembered the museum, and Hermione's love for anything remotely resembling a library, and he figured he had nothing to lose by mentioning it. And to his surprise, Hermione did actually seem pleased by his choice, and he was completely puzzled as to how he was supposed to ever fall properly in love with this woman if he could never figure out when he was doing something right, and when he wasn't. He was completely shocked every time he did the right thing, and now was no exception.

But for now, at least, it seemed he could be confident that he was doing well. He'd been on time to pick her up, and they'd apparated to the museum, and were now standing just inside the entrance, tickets in hand, deciding which direction to head in first. Ron's cheeks were nearly as red as his hair, as he became certain that everyone nearby could tell they were on a date, and he became flustered by the mere thought. "Um. You pick," he was saying to Hermione. "You're good at making decisions like this."

Hermione had been surprised and very pleased by the idea of going to the Quidditch museum. It seemed like the perfect blend of things they'd enjoy. Hermione was touched by Ron's thoughtfulness, actually, and was rather excited to go. She wore the dress that she'd picked out with Lavender, and paid special attention to her hair. Make-up would have been too much.

Hermione had read a lot about the history of Quidditch to prepare, and was looking forward to having visuals to go along with what she'd already read. She stood, feeling nervous about the social part of her date, and looked in either direction.

"The History of the Snitch." She decided, pointing down the hall.

Ron sincerely hoped that the history he encountered here would be more interesting than anything he'd been taught by Professor Binns because he really didn't want to be bored on this date, and more than that, he didn't want Hermione to see him get bored. He wanted to have a nice time, so she could at least think of this as a good date, even if she never fell in love with him.

"Alright," Ron said, following along. "It's weird, I don't really think about these things having a history, but obviously they do." He shrugged, walking along until they reached the exhibit. "Oh, look at that," said Ron, reading the information posted. "It wasn't always a Snitch. It used to be a... Golden Snidget." He laughed, reading that snidgets had become endangered species. "Gee, I wonder how that happened," he joked. "That's kind of awful, actually. Killing off a whole species for a sport."

Hermione walked alongside him, folding her arms across her tummy as they walked. It was a nervous gesture. She was really hoping that this date went well. She wanted nothing more than for them both to realize they were madly in love with each other.

"I know." Hermione said, tipping her head to the side as she looked up at the stuffed snidget. "Witches and wizards can be so careless." She added, slipping her hand into her pocket to put her ticket away.

"It just makes more sense to use something that's not alive," said Ron. He pointed to the photo of the wizard who'd invented the Snitch in order to preserve the world's remaining snidgets. "Did you know about this Bowman Wright bloke?" he asked, figuring Hermione knew most historical figures, no matter how insignificant. "He was from Godric's Hollow. It seems like everything happens there."

Hermione had flashes of memories of Godric's Hollow. The War Memorial, the Graveyard, Bathilda Bagshot's house, and the attack by Voldemort. Ron hadn't been with her and Harry when all of that happened. She gave a nod.

"I'd read about him before. I think he was brilliant to replace the animal with the Golden Snitch." She gave a nod. "And the charms they put on them are really remarkable. That they have flesh memory, and everything?" She paused.

"I think I'd like to live in Godric's Hollow some day."

Ron nodded, realizing he had no further intelligent commentary to add to what Hermione was saying. But then she mentioned Godric's Hollow, and he turned to look at her. "Yeah?" he said. "What for? You like it there?" He wasn't passing judgment, just merely asking since he didn't really know much about Hermione's plans for the future. He'd just been confident that she had them, and they didn't involve him. But maybe that wasn't so.

"I haven't exactly had good experiences there." Hermione said, crinkling her nose up a little. She gave a soft shrug, finally tearing her eyes from the stuffed Snidget to look over at Ron. Her cheeks went pink. "But I'd love to live in a wizarding community with such amazing history. Coming from a muggle background, it'd be fascinating to live somewhere where there are loads of witches and wizards around."

Ron nodded, hoping he wasn't going to upset Hermione by talking about difficult things. He'd heard the stories, of course, of what had happened to his two best friends while he was off being a selfish git, and he knew there were some things that had happened during the war that would always bring a somber tone to any conversation, but he didn't always think about all of that before he spoke. He didn't like to think about the war, and everyone they'd lost. It still hurt too much, and Ron didn't like to admit when he was in pain.

"You know, I forget sometimes your parents are Muggles," Ron said, shaking his head. "Would it bother them if you lived there?" he asked. "I mean, I can't imagine living where there aren't wizards, but you've done it."

Hermione wasn't a big fan of talking about the war, either. Probably not the best conversation for a first date. Wait, was this a first date? It seemed so strange to her that this was their first official date. How long had they been in love with each other, and this was the first time they were together like this?

"I don't think so." Hermione said, thinking about it. "They're used to using owls by now, and I can come and see them if it makes it easier." She blushed a little. "It's not all that different. People are just people, magic or no."

Ron nodded. He definitely agreed with that. The war had been all about that, for him - about allowing people, magical or not, from whatever kind of family and whatever kind of place, to just be, without worrying they'd be killed. He knew it would be a long while before the wizarding world was completely rid of bigotry, but the idea of it, and fighting for the idea of it, was extremely important to Ron. He was a child in many ways, but not on that point.

"I like Godric's Hollow," he said, finally, realizing he was imagining himself and Hermione in a little house with children and Harry and Ginny coming over with their kids. He wondered if this was a dream, a wish, or a goal, but he thought it was a pleasant thought. "I'd live there, I think."

Hermione thought Ron really grew up during the war. They all did, but Ron most of all. They seemed to come to some sort of understanding during that last battle when Ron wanted to free the House Elves. Hermione was starting to get that feeling in her gut again--that feeling that she had in the Room of Requirement when Rom mentioned freeing the Elves.

She gave a little nod. "It seems like a nice place to raise a family." She responded. Then cleared her throat a little. "Should we move on?"

"Oh, right, other exhibits," Ron said, as though he'd forgotten for a moment where he was. Which, in a way, he had, since he had been so caught up in thoughts of his imagined future. "Want to look at the Quaffle next?" he suggested. "Hopefully no one we know is around to sing Weasley is our King." He joked. "That's what quaffles always make me think of."

A nod. "Me, too." Hermione was so incredibly proud of Ron, far more than she let on. She turned to walk with him toward the Quaffle exhibit. She was starting to get hungry. In all her preparations, she'd forgotten to eat lunch today.

"Hm," Ron said. "The quaffle used to be brown, and it wasn't even enchanted." He shook his head. "I bet that was a lot easier to deal with, if it didn't have a mind of its own, yeah?" He read further down in the posted information. "Oh, and hey, it was a woman who invented the modern one, that's interesting."

Hermione didn't have to read the plaque to know that it was Daisy Pennifold who invented the modern quaffle. "Daisy Pennifold was one of the witches showcased in The Greatest Witch Inventors in Wizarding History." Hermione responded. "I picked it up as a birthday present to myself last year." Only Hermione would gift herself a book.

"She led a fascinating life. I've always wondered if I could invent something. Something useful--something that'll change Wizarding kind for the better."

"You've wondered?" Ron said, chuckling. "Hermione, of course you could invent something." He shook his head, amazed that Hermione didn't think of herself the way he saw her. He thought she was absolutely brilliant, and that was why he was so certain he'd never be good enough for her.

"I'm sure your name will be in some big, thick history book someday. And not just as Harry Potter's mate, either." That was perhaps what he would be remembered for, and maybe that bothered him, but he knew Hermione, at least, was destined for greatness all on her own.

Hermione blushed a little bit. She'd like that very much. She was struck with the memory of a scene from JRR Tolkien, where Sam and Frodo talk about how songs will be written for Sam. She grinned at Ron.

"You really think so?" She asked. She'd honestly be content to help people in what little ways she could, rather than in a big way like Harry did.

Ron grinned back, his ears turning pink. "Yeah, sure," Ron said, nodding. "I think you could do pretty much anything, to be honest. I mean, you sort of do now, with how much you're involved in."

The blush spread. "Thanks, Ron." She responded.

Then, on a whim, she reached for his hand.

Ron's face blushed too now, but he had the wherewithal not to pull away, instead tightening his grip just a bit to participate in the hand-hold. "So, um," he said, trying not to show how flustered he was (in a good way) by moving on to the next exhibit. "Oh, look, here are the, uh, bludgers."

"Bludgers. Right." Hermione turned to take a couple steps toward the Bludger exhibit. The charm on her high heels was fading, and she was about to start wobbling. "They used to be rocks." She said, looking at the bludgers in the cage.

Ron chuckled a bit. "But the beaters broke them up into gravel!" He shook his head. "That would be pretty bloody annoying," he said, "having all those little rocks flying at you. Oh, and look," he went on, pointing. "They tried to use lead too, but the things got all wonky when they were bent out of shape."

He was finding this stuff a lot more interesting than he'd realized, and he wondered if this was what going to museums and libraries was like for Hermione all the time. Maybe, he thought, he should give this kind of stuff another chance.

Hermione looked over at one of the antique lead balls. She gave a soft, involuntary shudder. "I still can't imagine having something iron flying around at me, trying to knock me off a broom." She shook her head a little.

"I don't know how you and Harry do it. And Ginny, too... professionally! It's so frightening."

Ron laughed softly over that. "It's bloody fun, that's how," he said, getting that look of excitement on his face just thinking of how good it felt to be up on that broom, keeping the quaffle from scoring a goal. "I mean, sure, it's a bit scary, I guess, and the injuries you get can be painful, but there's nothing like it. There really isn't."

Hermione gave a little nod. She couldn't imagine it, really. Then again, she wasn't good enough on a broom to even attempt quidditch. She may have been a talented witch in other fields, but flying was difficult for her. She preferred her feet on the ground.

"I suppose so. I enjoy watching you fly." She blushed a little. "But I don't think I'd like it myself."
