Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Ron & Hermione
What: Their auction date
Where: Quidditch museum
When: Saturday, beginning at 6

Ron wasn't sure what had made him suggest going to the Quidditch museum on a date, except that it sounded like the kind of thing that both he and Hermione could reasonably enjoy. At first, he'd thought of taking her to play Quidditch, but something told him that would make the whole thing even more of a disaster than it already was. And then he'd remembered the museum, and Hermione's love for anything remotely resembling a library, and he figured he had nothing to lose by mentioning it. And to his surprise, Hermione did actually seem pleased by his choice, and he was completely puzzled as to how he was supposed to ever fall properly in love with this woman if he could never figure out when he was doing something right, and when he wasn't. He was completely shocked every time he did the right thing, and now was no exception.

But for now, at least, it seemed he could be confident that he was doing well. He'd been on time to pick her up, and they'd apparated to the museum, and were now standing just inside the entrance, tickets in hand, deciding which direction to head in first. Ron's cheeks were nearly as red as his hair, as he became certain that everyone nearby could tell they were on a date, and he became flustered by the mere thought. "Um. You pick," he was saying to Hermione. "You're good at making decisions like this."

"Oh, yes, it does." Hermione said, finally bringing her eyes up to his again. She was grinning awkwardly and blushing a little. She'd really only meant to break the tension. "But I just wanted you to know I... well, I've been thinking about it."

Ron blushed. "Well, I've been thinking about it, too," he confessed. "I'm just too bloody nervous about it to bring it up." He flashed a grin at Hermione, feeling his ears burn red with the embarrassment of discussing what would happen later so openly and frankly. Then he lost his nerve and looked away, taking a sip of beer to break the tension.

"I'm surprised I was brave enough." Hermione said, though she sort of regretted saying it. She didn't want to seem cowardly. "We haven't... I mean, not since the Room of Requirement..."

And the thought of that kiss brought a deep flush to her cheeks. She lifted her own beer to try and hide it.

Ron nodded. "I remember," he said. "Kind of hard to forget, I think." He tried not to think too hard about that day, and about everyone they'd lost. He tried especially hard not to think of Fred, whose loss had been a lot harder on Ron than he'd ever confessed aloud to anyone. That, more than anything, was the reason the kiss he and Hermione had shared that day had never been repeated. He'd gone into a kind of emotional coma after his brother died, and once he felt better, Ron had then started acting like an overgrown teenager.

It was only recently, after seeing Harry get married, that Ron had even begun to shape up, and only now that he found himself seriously thinking about that kiss, and wondering if the second one would have the same emotional charge as the first. He hoped so. He didn't want to find out that he'd waited too long and his chances to win over Hermione had passed.

Honestly, their next kiss would probably not be as charged as the first--but as far as Hermione was concerned, it would be just as meaningful. "Very." She responded, blushing a bit more and giving a nod.

"I know it was right in a war, and that things were a bit crazy." She said, as if explaining the last kiss they shared.

Ron nodded. "And I'd pretty much wanted to kiss you my whole life by then," he added. "It figures I wouldn't get that through my thick skull until we were in a life or death situation." He shrugged.

"I didn't really do the right thing after the war either," he added. "I was not a very good person in the last few years. I don't know what I thought I was doing." He looked up, catching Hermione's eye. "But I'm trying to fix it all now."

Hermione flushed. "Well, I'm glad that you understood why... why I did what I did." She responded. She felt like she had to apologize for pouncing on him back in the Room of Requirement during the battle. She was a little embarrassed that she'd done it.

Hermione blinked, looking back into his eyes. She was slightly confused. "What are you trying to fix?"

"You know what I've been like," Ron said, speaking as both her friend and her date. "I'm not like Harry. He became responsible. I just sort of...floated about." He shrugged, turning serious. "I think it was mainly because of Fred, you know?" he said.

Hermione gave a little nod, looking down at the table. She knew. She'd had it all figured out. Ron wasn't the type of person she could confront and bring to his senses. She'd tried in the past, and it'd never worked.

"I'm glad you're trying to fix it, if that's what you mean." She said, flicking her eyes up to his again.

"Percy was right about one thing," Ron said. "I can't be a child forever. Right? Not that I was planning to. I just... wasn't planning anything. Floating, like I said."

"Did Percy say that to you?" Maybe she'd been wrong about confronting Ron not doing anything. "I really think his heart is in the right place." She said, coming to Percy's defense a little. Hermione and Percy always seemed to get along.

"He came to my flat to yell at me," Ron said. "The usual thing with him. He knows best." He sighed. "I was nervous enough, he made it worse. And I don't know if he used the word child, but he definitely made me feel like one."

Hermione nodded. She knew that Percy had that tone... she knew that she had it sometimes, too. "Well, don't. I wouldn't date you if you were a child." She said, attempting at a joke to make him feel better.

"Besides, you're getting your life together. It doesn't happen overnight."

"I hope not!" Ron laughed. "I mean, come on, we all know I've never been perfect," he said. "But I'm working on it. That counts, doesn't it?"

"Absolutely." Hermione said, smirking a little and lifting her drink. "Come on, though," she said, lowering her glass again after a quick sip. "No one's perfect, Ron. You don't need to set your aim so high."

"You're pretty bloody close," Ron blurted. "And you know, a man has to be worthy, doesn't he?" He blushed, then sipped his beer to calm himself.

Hermione went scarlet. "I'm really not." She lifted her own beer to take a sip, finding her hand shaking just a little. "Do you... do you really think you're not worthy?" It was such a silly thing for him to say. Ron had always been worthy to her.

Ron shrugged. "I don't know..." he said, looking away shyly. "I want you to think I'm worthy. And Percy... gave me more doubts than I already had..." He blushed a fierce red which rivaled the color of his hair. He was too shy to look at Hermione now, afraid he had revealed too much.

Hermione was gaping at him. How could he not know she thought him worthy? Then again, he had a bit of guilt after he came back during their year on the run... and it'd taken her longer than she liked to admit to forgive him. She tore her eyes from his face and brought them down to the table, inspecting the wood.

"I think you're worthy." She said, softly. "I always have."

Ron blushed, also looking down, away from Hermione's eyes. It meant a lot to him - certainly more than he could articulate - that Hermione thought he was worthy, because he really respected her opinion on pretty much everything, and he knew if she had a high opinion of him, it was a true compliment.

"Thanks," he mumbled.

"I think I'm ready to go home now." Hermione said. She finished the last of her beer. The next bit would be the best part. At least, that's what she was imagining. The goodnight kiss. The part they'd both been waiting for.

Ron nodded. "Alright," he said, and swallowed, his throat dry even though he'd just had a beer. "Sure." He felt the beads of sweat already forming between his fingers, making his palms feel slick. He was so nervous.

"We should probably apparate down the street and walk to my front door." She was assuming he was going to walk her home. Or even come in for a moment, if he wanted to. But, what if he didn't want to walk her home? Should they say good night here and go their separate ways?

"Alright," Ron said agreeably. He wanted to walk her home because he wanted to feel like he'd done something on this date to properly demonstrate he wasn't a total waste, and that he might make an alright boyfriend, even if he was often awkward. "Shall we go now then?"

Hermione stood and reached out her hand to him. "Let's go."

It only took a couple moments, and they'd apparated to Hermione's street. Her flat was a couple doors down from the safe apparation point.
