The hotel may be secure, but its residents' minds were not.

The passcode to get in had been plucked from the mind of an overactive teenager on their way to the hotel after school. When they made their way into the hotel after the majority of the residents and that night's guests had retired, illusion cloaked their entry. The residents that were awake felt the sudden need to sleep and if they were lucky, they got to the mattress before they fell unconscious.

With the young mutants in the hotel at their mercy, the sisters Wyngarde did a brief telepathic sweep of the grounds, making sure no one had been immune to their wiles and remained awake. Jason Wyngarde and Manuel de la Rocha followed before the four toured the hotel, setting up their operations in the abandoned penthouse on the top floor.

[ Paradise Hotel, Santa Monica ]

Everyone might have been on guard for another potential quake - but this was so completely off the scales of what anyone imagined. At around 3pm on Friday afternoon, the ground buckled and rippled out from the epicenter, quickly extending far out beyond Santa Monica's borders, the entire state and the surrounding areas soon feeling the shake.

At Paradise Hotel, they were luckier than most. Thanks to the quick thinking of Jean Grey and Madeline Pryor, they were able to reinforce the hotel, keeping it from completely collapsing around everyone's ears. It wasn't perfect - the top of the building still swayed and buckled, the two top floors crashing down in on each other and partially damaging the third. Most of the windows shattered, with the balconies quickly collapsing in on themselves and the back stairs following suit.

In the upper levels, Julian Keller found himself caught underneath a piece of falling concrete, knocked out as it pinned him down. Mark Sheppard, having stepped out onto one of the balconies not long before the quake, was instead impaled by a broken railing, suspended almost in midair. Forge would later be found buried underneath a slab of concrete that had once been part of the back stairs. They weren't the only residents who needed immediate help, and everyone needed to get out of there in a hurry.

Paradise Hotel was trying to fall down.

Without Remy, Vanessa was left to navigate the basement by herself. With the door they entered being sealed, she'd have to find another way out.

Vanessa led the freed mutants deeper into the basement, looking for another exit before Cal caught up with them. He told them about how he managed to trigger the release of the heavy metal door and that they should hurry before it latched again. He didn't have to tell them twice -- the group began running toward that long staircase that would leave them back up the church. However, before reaching the stairs, the generator waned and the lights blacked out before regaining power.

But that wasn't the only thing that regained power. )

Cal's powers were still hardly what could be referred to as developed, but he'd gotten a little better with them. He didn't have to be around a person for their copy to stay with him, for example. He still couldn't hold it as long as he liked, it worked more on a sliding scale dependant on how long he was around them to make the copy, but it was better than it had been. And he could keep that copy instead of having it switch out with others around him, although it was hard to do that with multiple powers. It was a good thing, then, that Tessa's was the only mutation that he really needed to keep in his stash.

He was using it to get into the Church of Enlightenment's networks, so that he could get into their files and send them straight to Tessa, cutting out potential problems and detections that might come from accessing it from further away. )

((backdated to earlier this week))

Calvin Rankin was not exactly a person that it was smart to mess with. Not simply for the logical reasons, alhough there were a number of them -- he was well built, knew how to handle himself, and apparently wasn't afraid to get into fights, he was smart and didn't have qualms with using that to shout others down in arguments, and he had powers that enabled him to be as good as you were at most anything you could do. All of which he used to his advantage, especially in the last few months. The real reason, though, that it wasn't smart to get on his bad side, was that he had a taste for vengeance longer than the state of California. If someone wronged him, he didn't simply shrug it off and get over it. He would get that person back, somehow. And the time when it was really advisable to worry about what he might do was when he seemed like he wasn't going to actually do anything.

As was the case with Lorna Dane. )

summary: With tensions rising at SaMoHS, Lorna becomes the target of an angry group who remembers what she did in the earlier fight. Cal, being an idiot, tries to get her out. Which makes his hair turn green. Which makes people freak out. Which makes the crowd get bigger and angrier. Which makes Cal get into a fight and throw a door. Which makes he and Lorna bolt from the school in the middle of the day. But there's angry sex afterwards? And an evil plan hatched by Lorna, sigh. This is why we can't have nice things.

Lorna really didn't know how to react to Cal's use of her powers and more or less stood there gaping like an idiot along with the rest of the student body. Weirdly it gave her a little bit of a thrill to see them used that way, maybe because it made her realise how powerful she really was. )

SUMMARY: Cal tells Lorna that people have been talking about her possible mutant status, she actually thanks him and then they decide to cut class and go to Taco Bell.

Just saying you were probably one of those things on the news. And something about how your special power was probably giving head. )

Cal Rankin had been avoiding Lorna Dane. Well, somewhat. He had no idea if she was even looking for him, or tyring to find him, but he was actively trying to stay out of her path -- or, more correctly, to keep her out of his range. He was appreciative of her help, definitely. And for getting him in touch with people like Tessa, and more or less bringing him into the whole superpowered world in general. Also, she was hot, and he even was a fan of her attitude, believe it or not.

But she was also one of the few who had powers that he couldn't hide. Namely, her green hair. He was a little worried that his hair might just shift to that color out of nowhere in the hall, and leave him with staring people to try and explain the phenomena to. By the time he realized he had her powers, it would be too late. And he couldn't just wander around wearing a hat all the time.

But, still, he did want to see her again. Who wouldn't? Besides the girls who all seemed to hate her for one reason or another, of course. Being a psychotic bitch seemed to be high on their list of reasons, but Cal wasn't particularly bothered by that complaint. He'd had people upset with his own attitude more than a few times in the past. Besides, that was Girl Business, and he had no interest in getting pulled into sides when it came to who was friends with whom and whatever else. Nice as they seemed, he was still cautious, and felt that the best approach would be to just do what he wanted, without worrying what others thought of him for it.

Which was why he was out looking for Lorna now. School had just ended, but he knew there was probably twenty or thirty minutes before practices like cheerleading would start. He was waiting on the outside of the school, by the doors, a beanie covering his hair -- good thing too, as he felt the gain of those magnetic powers come on. His eyes turned to the door, waiting for her to come out. When she did, he stepped forward and reached out to take her arm to get her attention. "Hey." What's up, lady?

summary! Lorna tries to hit on the new guy at school, only to find out that he's a freak too! And...one just like her?

So either this guy just happened to have the exact same powers as her or he was some random relative that she'd never heard of. Which was possible of course seeing as how her biological parents were both fairly MIA. Though obviously Lorna was hoping it wasn't the latter because ew, perving on a cousin or a brother is just highly unacceptable. )

Cal had already decided that he didn't like Santa Monica. Stepping out of the airport terminal, he blinked at the sun and felt the heat piercing through the jacket that he'd worn on the plane. Almost seventy degrees outside.

In February.

It wasn't that Cal had never traveled before. Granted, most of it was done when he was younger and his father still felt bad about leaving him home alone, but the point remained. He'd been to hotter climates in the winter, and colder ones in the summer. But never to go live. And that alone made him dig in his heels about it. It wasn't even that he was so eager to stay at home. It had, after all, turned into something of a hellhole for him. Suspended from school, people vandalizing the house, one group trying to jump him when he'd gone out for the night -- a new start was really the best, just to get away from it all. But all of that anger didn't really have any place to go at the moment, and so he was expelling at least some of it on having to be uprooted to the other side of the country.

His father's apparent lack of concern didn't really make anything better. )
