Minor Injury Meme

A meme for those minor injuries that won't leave you down but make it hard to live your life. The breaks, sprains, and the hurt/comfort that comes with them.

INJURIES

1. SPRAIN: you stepped the wrong way, twisted the wrong way, and something has gone terribly wrong. Just remember RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

2. FRACTURE: You step off the sidewalk, working in the backyard, and suddenly BAM!! But it's not a sprain, oh no, you're in a cast for the duration. Good luck trying to get to work.

3. PULLED: It's not bad enough for medical attention but it still hurts something fierce. Break out the tiger balm or someone to give you a hand because you've pulled something. That awkward moment when you think you want vicodin...and nobody will give it to you.

4. MIGRAINE: Light hurts, air hurts, moving hurts. All you can do is lie in a darkened room and pray for the pounding pain to go away behind your eyes.

5. THE FLU: Maybe you're physically fine – well… all your limbs are working. You just feel like death warmed over.

6. WILDCARD: Anything else you can think of.

SCENARIOS

1. INJURED! WHAT NEXT?: You're out working, you're out having fun, you're out doing something when suddenly you step, twist, move and our bodies demonstrate just how fragile they really are. Quick! someone call the ambulance!

2. THE EMERGENCY ROOM: All the fun of a waiting room with rewards that include crutches, casts, X-Rays, vicodin, and sometimes just that one nurse who says "Yeah there's nothing wrong with you that'll be 400 dollars."

3. HOME AND SETTING UP THE NEST: Hurt, trying to make a space for you to get around. Hopefully someone is there to help you get to your crutches so you can go to the bathroom and make yourself something to eat.

4. PHYSICAL THERAPY HOME EDITION: The obligatory smut option. Do you not see that I'm wearing this cast?

5. OH GOD HELP I'M GOING TO DIE: That awkward moment when the fact that you are bedridden is crushing down on you and you're terrified you'll do something to make the injury worse. Snappish, angry, and rude - who are you going to take it out on?

6. DRIVE ME TO THE DOCTOR THIS SHIT IS COMING OFF: It's time, they say you can come in, take it off, and begin the next stage of recovery. Failing that, you’re going to grab a saw and cut the damn thing off yourself! Will there be joy, laughter, crying, happiness?

7. WILDCARD: Anything else you can think of.

"Uh, yeah. He's on my plan. We cohabitate." Daniel retrieved his driver's license from his wallet as proof of ID that he was who he said he was. He knew Johnny hadn't had insurance for a long time. He wondered just how many injuries he left untreated because he couldn't afford it... it made his heart and head hurt. No one should suffer because they aren't rich.

Daniel knew that feeling all too well. He was supposed to have had surgery on his knee back when he was a teen but there was no way his Ma could afford it. It still gave him trouble from time to time.

"I need to call our daughter."

Handing him back his cards, she took a look at his driver's license. "Okay. I'll leave out the DNR, but we need to know of any allergies, past medical history, things like that." She said, handing him a clipboard with forms on it, and a pen.

"It's a good idea to call her, in case she wants to be here with you. My name is Elizabeth, you can have them page me if you need anything, or you have any questions." She told him, and touched his wrist briefly. "I'm not going to lie to you, if it's internal bleeding, it could be bad. You should be prepared for anything that could happen."

Daniel slid all the cards back into his wallet and took the clipboard and the pen. He stared down at the paper, suddenly realising he knew very little about those kinds of things when it came to Johnny.

He loved Johnny. Their relationship hadn't exactly had a normal path. But he loved him. But looking at the form he was drawing a blank. He filled in what few bits he knew. He wondered whether he should call Bobby. He would probably know more.

Instead, he called Sam. She would want to know about Johnny. They got on strangely well, all things considered.

Sam was just getting home, she'd been out with Miguel and Demetri. She was surprised that Demetri hadn't invited Yasmin, but maybe they weren't really serious enough for actually hanging out and going on dates together. So it had just been the three of them.

After she'd kicked off her shoes and was on the way to get a soda, she noticed her phone ringing. "Hey, Dad." She said, as she picked it up. "You and Johnny aren't home? I thought he was sick. I brought him some ice cream." She said, as she put it away in the freezer.

It was rocky road, his favorite. Not that he would admit that to anyone out loud.

	Daniel could feel the panic rising now he actually had to say the words. He forced himself to take a few deep breaths. "We're at the hospital. He was coughing up blood. Then he deteriorated in the car. They... they've rushed him into surgery." Fuck. Saying it out loud made it so much more real. "They... they're... there's a chance he might not pull through..." "Dad, oh my God!" Sam said, putting her drink down on the kitchen table. She hadn't expected this. "Do you want me to come?" She asked, her heart was beating a mile a minute. Sam didn't know what her dad was going to do if he lost Johnny. She knew that they loved each other, and they were really cute together.

This was probably not a good time to tell him about the kid she met while she was out. It was still crazy to her, and she knew that he was going to think it was too. "What happened? Did he tell you? Or does he not know?"

This was crazy. Sam wondered if it was Kreese or anyone from Cobra Kai.

"Apparently Kreese kicked the crap out of him the other day." Daniel let out a heavy, shaky sigh. "I should've noticed. I should've noticed there was something wrong. Maybe if I'd brought him to the hospital when it happened... if I'd just... fuck..."

Tears rolled down his cheeks and he tried desperately to wipe them away with his free hand. "Internal bleeding... and the nurse was talking about DNR and I just..." Daniel swallowed hard. He couldn't burden Sam with his worries. She was a kid.

"I'll be okay, sweetheart. You do whatever you were going to do tonight. My other card is in the drawer if you wanna order takeout. I'll keep you updated."

"I'm coming, Dad." She said, as she went back for her shoes. "You're not doing this by yourself." She told him firmly. "And um... there was something I had to tell you." Sam slipped her feet back into her sandals, glad she didn't have to adjust any buckles or anything to get them on.

After her shoes were on, she moved to grab her keys. And her purse, which she didn't usually carry. "I met someone today. His name is Deacon. Deacon... LaRusso." Sam had been surprised, she hadn't thought there was anyone named LaRusso she didn't at least know of, and then he'd told her he was named for his father, Daniel.

He hadn't been looking for Sam specifically, but he was looking for Daniel. He wanted to meet him. He'd just found out that Daniel was alive, which was apparently something that his mother had neglected to tell him. Sam was just curious as to how he could be Daniel's, he would never have cheated on her mother. Even if apparently Amanda hadn't had that same idea.

"I'm leaving now." She added, as she got outside and headed for her car.

The name wasn't familiar. As far as Daniel was aware, they were the only LaRussos in the area. He didn't like the heavy weight that settled in his gut though. "Who? Where did you meet him? Where is he from?"

Daniel had never cheated on Amanda. But they had invited others into their bed on occasion. A completely mutual agreement. Only, maybe more mutual on Amanda's part. Looking back, Daniel realised that it was always Amanda who pushed for it. He just went along with it. Usually it was men, but occasionally it would be a woman.

But they had always been so careful. Surely there couldn't have been any accidents... or if there had, he and Amanda would've known about it, right?

"Drive carefully, Sam. I love you."

"He's from here in Encino, maybe about twenty minutes from us? He says he's your son, his mom told him that you were dead. He's eighteen, and Dad, he looks like you, a lot." Sam told him, if she hadn't had a boyfriend, and he wasn't her half brother, she'd have thought he was hot.

Going out to the car, and switching it on, she switched to the car's call system. "He has a birth certificate, Dad. You're listed. The woman's name is Delilah Gaines, do you know her?" Sam asked, she was wondering if her dad would recognize the name or not.

"I'll drive safe, Dad. I'm just heading out now. Keep calm, okay? Papa's gonna be fine." Sam said, as she pulled out onto the busy street that would lead her to the highway.

"Your mom had a friend called Lilah..." A heaviness sat in the pit of his stomach. Could he really have fathered a child without knowing about it? He had always prided himself on being a good dad, always there for his kids. How could he have an almost adult kid he knew nothing about? All those lost years.

He already felt sick with worry over Johnny, and now this was an added worry.

"Yeah... he's far too stubborn to let a little thing like internal bleeding finish him off. I'm sure he'd say that dying on the operating table was a pussy move..." Daniel tried to sound optimistic. Maybe if he believed it would all be okay enough, then everything would work out fine. "I'll see you soon, sweetheart."

"Dad, it's not something you can change. It's not your fault that you didn't know. All you can do is make up for the lost time." She said, hoping that he would worry less, at least, about that part anyway.

Sam laughed a little. "Yeah, I'm sure that he would say that too. You're right. It's gonna be okay. I'll see you as soon as I can get there." She told him, and hung up, she wanted to be able to focus on driving, the freeway was always tough, she didn't want to be on the phone.

As soon as she got to the hospital, she hurried into the ER waiting room, and looked for her dad. As soon as she saw him, she hurried over to give him a hug. "Any more news?" She asked, trying not to worry about Johnny.

	Daniel hugged Sam back. He was a ball of nerves. He had bought a cup of coffee, but he hadn't drunk it - things were bad if he wasn't even drinking his coffee. He clung to her, trembling a little. "He will be, Dad. I promise." Sam told him, and Miguel came hurrying up. She'd picked him up on the way. She knew he'd want to know that Johnny was in the hospital. He gave Sam a hug. Then he looked at Daniel. "I'm... I had to be here for Sensei." He said, reaching down to take Sam's hand. Sam squeezed his hand, doing her best to not squeeze too hard.

Sam took the cup of coffee Daniel held, and put it on the table beside them. "It's gonna be okay." She said, and then her phone was ringing. She moved to answer it, her eyebrow quirking up. She expected to see Moon or Demetri, maybe Hawk. When she saw her half brother, she was surprised. "Um, hi, Deacon."

A boy with Daniel's coloring and silky black curls filled her phone screen. "Hey Sam. I just.. .. I wanted to make sure you got home okay." He spoke with a soft Italian accent.

Of course Miguel would want to be there for Johnny. The man was like a father to him. If Daniel had been thinking clearly then he would've called him. He was too wrapped up in his worry though. He'd barely had the clarity to ring Sam.

Daniel gave a nod and patted Miguel's shoulder.

Seeing Deacon on the screen made the whole thing so much more real. There was no doubt that Daniel and Deacon were related. The similarities were all too plain to see. Fuck. He couldn't believe he had fathered another kid. Sam had always been his firstborn, his pride and joy. But that... that wasn't true. Another kid he knew nothing about was his firstborn.

"Hey, D." Miguel said, waving at him. "Hey, Miggy, you guys okay? Why does it look like you're in a hospital?" Deacon's hazel eyes lit up though, it was obvious he had a crush on Miguel. Sam hadn't seemed to notice it, and neither had Miguel. Sam had been in contact with Deacon for a month or so, she'd wanted to make sure he was the real deal before she spilled the beans.

Tucking some hair behind her ear, she said, "My stepdad's in the hospital. It's serious." She told him, and his face fell. "I'm sorry, Sam. I can come, bring you guys something to eat. Mom's asleep, she just got off a 16 hour shift." Sam cast a glance at Daniel, she knew he probably needed to eat.

"Actually, that'd be really cool of you, D." Sam said, hoping she wasn't about to fight with her father about this. "And thanks, by the way, I got home okay." She said. "Can you get some Mexican, you know, the place Miguel likes?" She asked, and Deacon's smile lit up his whole face.

"Sure thing, babygirl. I'll be there in about 45, the traffic's nuts from Reseda." Deacon told her, he had a tiny, skinny little bod just like Daniel had as a kid. "Okay. Be safe, I'll pay you back." Sam told him, and they said goodbye.

Oh god. Deacon was coming to the hospital? Daniel wasn't sure he was ready for that but it didn't look like he had a choice. His heart was racing so fast he was sure it was going to burst right out of his chest.

On a positive note though, Sam and Deacon seemed to be getting along pretty well. That was something at least.

"You know you guys don't need to stay, right? If you want to go I'll call as soon as there's any news about Johnny."

"What? Dad, no, we are going to be here. And you need someone here for you." Sam said, looking at him as she put her phone back in her purse. She knew he was doing this because of Deacon. Sam looked at Daniel. "If you don't want to talk to him, it's okay, Dad. You don't have to. I can text him and tell him we'll meet him downstairs or something."

Sam bit her lip. She could tell that he was nervous. Not that she blamed him. "I'm sorry, Dad, I didn't think about it, I mean, not really. I was thinking you needed food."

Daniel shook his head. "No, it's fine. I just... what am I even meant to say to him? 'Sorry I missed your entire childhood. I didn't even know you existed. Your mom had a threesome with my ex-wife and I'? I can't believe I've had another kid all these years."

He wondered whether Amanda knew. If that was the reason she and Deacon's mom stopped talking. Daniel felt like he was the only one who didn't know.

Oh god. What was he even supposed to tell Johnny if... when he recovered? Oops, sorry, I actually have three kids, not two.

"... Does he hate me? Deacon, I mean."

"Wow. A threesome?" Sam asked, her blue eyes wide. "That's so kinky, Dad. Who knew you had it in you?" She asked, shaking her head in surprise. She looked at him. "Of course he doesn't. His mom told him you were dead. He didn't know you were still around to gave in his life. He really just wants to be able to get to know you."

Sam looked at Miguel, and then back at her father. "I'm also sorry I've known for a month. Before I told you. I wanted to know that he was the real thing before I told you. You've been so happy with Johnny." She couldn't imagine a time when she had seen him so happy.

"I swear, all he wants is the chance to know you. He's not mad at you. Doesn't talk to his mom anymore, since she kept it from him."

Daniel flinched. "Sorry. Sorry... that's... you probably didn't need to know that." No one wanted to hear about their parents' sex lives. Especially that their mom often liked to bring in a third person. In hindsight, maybe Daniel had never been enough for Amanda. The warning signs should've been there.

That said, if he hadn't married Amanda then he wouldn't have Sam or Tony and they were worth every ounce of heartache the divorce had caused him.

And he was happy with Johnny. Happier than he ever thought was possible.

Sam shook her head. "It's okay, Dad. You didn't give me details, so it's okay." She thought it was cool that Daniel had a kinkier side to him. Not in a creepy way, but in a it made him a more interesting person kind of way.

She snapped her fingers. "It was Amanda's idea, I bet." She said, she still refused to talk to her mother. She didn't even consider her family anymore. Sam leaned back into Miguel. She hoped Johnny was going to be okay. She bit her lip, worrying it between her teeth.

They couldn't lose Johnny. He was a good dad. Anthony and Johnny loved to play video games together, it was cute trying to teach Johnny how to use the newer systems. Sam wished that Robby had given Johnny another shot. She thought that Deacon would get along with both Daniel and Johnny, and she was glad that he had the chance to know them.

Oh, it had definitely been Amanda's idea. The same Amanda that had been pegging Daniel for the last twenty years. There were some things teenage girls did not need to know about their parents though.

Instead, Daniel tutted at Sam. "Sam, come on, we've been over this. Whatever happened between me and her with the divorce, she's still your mom. She still loves you." Amanda had cheated on him, left him for another man - one of their co-workers no ess, and tried blaming the whole thing on the karate war, yet Daniel would still defend her to the kids. That's just what a decent guy did.

"No she doesn't. She left, Dad." Sam said, and Miguel stayed quiet with this, not wanting to get in the middle. Or say anything bad about Amanda. Sam rolled her eyes. "She left with Anoush, and we haven't heard from her since then. Anthony may have, but I haven't."

She wasn't surprised that Daniel was trying to stick up for her, that was just how he was. "And Johnny is a great dad. Have you seen him try and play video games with Anthony?" She asked, unable to keep the smile off her face.

Then there was the occasional prank the two of them pulled off. It was cute, he was a lot like Johnny already.

Daniel still couldn't believe that Amanda had all but cut ties with the kids. She still saw Tony occasionally, but for the most part she had dumped all parental responsibility on Daniel. It wasn't what the terms of their divorce had stated. In fact, Amanda was supposed to have the kids most of the time. Daniel was supposed to have alternate weekends and some holidays.

Not that he was complaining. He loved having his kids around. But he just couldn't understand why Amanda had agreed to the split custody only to walk out on them.

Then again, he didn't understand why Amanda did a lot of the things she did.

"Johnny and Tony are cute together. Both annoying shitheads, but cute." There was something touching to see a technological dinosaur like Johnny trying to get to grips with modern technology so he could play video games with a preteen.
