Minor Injury Meme

A meme for those minor injuries that won't leave you down but make it hard to live your life. The breaks, sprains, and the hurt/comfort that comes with them.

INJURIES

1. SPRAIN: you stepped the wrong way, twisted the wrong way, and something has gone terribly wrong. Just remember RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

2. FRACTURE: You step off the sidewalk, working in the backyard, and suddenly BAM!! But it's not a sprain, oh no, you're in a cast for the duration. Good luck trying to get to work.

3. PULLED: It's not bad enough for medical attention but it still hurts something fierce. Break out the tiger balm or someone to give you a hand because you've pulled something. That awkward moment when you think you want vicodin...and nobody will give it to you.

4. MIGRAINE: Light hurts, air hurts, moving hurts. All you can do is lie in a darkened room and pray for the pounding pain to go away behind your eyes.

5. THE FLU: Maybe you're physically fine – well… all your limbs are working. You just feel like death warmed over.

6. WILDCARD: Anything else you can think of.

SCENARIOS

1. INJURED! WHAT NEXT?: You're out working, you're out having fun, you're out doing something when suddenly you step, twist, move and our bodies demonstrate just how fragile they really are. Quick! someone call the ambulance!

2. THE EMERGENCY ROOM: All the fun of a waiting room with rewards that include crutches, casts, X-Rays, vicodin, and sometimes just that one nurse who says "Yeah there's nothing wrong with you that'll be 400 dollars."

3. HOME AND SETTING UP THE NEST: Hurt, trying to make a space for you to get around. Hopefully someone is there to help you get to your crutches so you can go to the bathroom and make yourself something to eat.

4. PHYSICAL THERAPY HOME EDITION: The obligatory smut option. Do you not see that I'm wearing this cast?

5. OH GOD HELP I'M GOING TO DIE: That awkward moment when the fact that you are bedridden is crushing down on you and you're terrified you'll do something to make the injury worse. Snappish, angry, and rude - who are you going to take it out on?

6. DRIVE ME TO THE DOCTOR THIS SHIT IS COMING OFF: It's time, they say you can come in, take it off, and begin the next stage of recovery. Failing that, you’re going to grab a saw and cut the damn thing off yourself! Will there be joy, laughter, crying, happiness?

7. WILDCARD: Anything else you can think of.

Daniel shook his head. "No, it's fine. I just... what am I even meant to say to him? 'Sorry I missed your entire childhood. I didn't even know you existed. Your mom had a threesome with my ex-wife and I'? I can't believe I've had another kid all these years."

He wondered whether Amanda knew. If that was the reason she and Deacon's mom stopped talking. Daniel felt like he was the only one who didn't know.

Oh god. What was he even supposed to tell Johnny if... when he recovered? Oops, sorry, I actually have three kids, not two.

"... Does he hate me? Deacon, I mean."

"Wow. A threesome?" Sam asked, her blue eyes wide. "That's so kinky, Dad. Who knew you had it in you?" She asked, shaking her head in surprise. She looked at him. "Of course he doesn't. His mom told him you were dead. He didn't know you were still around to gave in his life. He really just wants to be able to get to know you."

Sam looked at Miguel, and then back at her father. "I'm also sorry I've known for a month. Before I told you. I wanted to know that he was the real thing before I told you. You've been so happy with Johnny." She couldn't imagine a time when she had seen him so happy.

"I swear, all he wants is the chance to know you. He's not mad at you. Doesn't talk to his mom anymore, since she kept it from him."

Daniel flinched. "Sorry. Sorry... that's... you probably didn't need to know that." No one wanted to hear about their parents' sex lives. Especially that their mom often liked to bring in a third person. In hindsight, maybe Daniel had never been enough for Amanda. The warning signs should've been there.

That said, if he hadn't married Amanda then he wouldn't have Sam or Tony and they were worth every ounce of heartache the divorce had caused him.

And he was happy with Johnny. Happier than he ever thought was possible.

Sam shook her head. "It's okay, Dad. You didn't give me details, so it's okay." She thought it was cool that Daniel had a kinkier side to him. Not in a creepy way, but in a it made him a more interesting person kind of way.

She snapped her fingers. "It was Amanda's idea, I bet." She said, she still refused to talk to her mother. She didn't even consider her family anymore. Sam leaned back into Miguel. She hoped Johnny was going to be okay. She bit her lip, worrying it between her teeth.

They couldn't lose Johnny. He was a good dad. Anthony and Johnny loved to play video games together, it was cute trying to teach Johnny how to use the newer systems. Sam wished that Robby had given Johnny another shot. She thought that Deacon would get along with both Daniel and Johnny, and she was glad that he had the chance to know them.

Oh, it had definitely been Amanda's idea. The same Amanda that had been pegging Daniel for the last twenty years. There were some things teenage girls did not need to know about their parents though.

Instead, Daniel tutted at Sam. "Sam, come on, we've been over this. Whatever happened between me and her with the divorce, she's still your mom. She still loves you." Amanda had cheated on him, left him for another man - one of their co-workers no ess, and tried blaming the whole thing on the karate war, yet Daniel would still defend her to the kids. That's just what a decent guy did.

"No she doesn't. She left, Dad." Sam said, and Miguel stayed quiet with this, not wanting to get in the middle. Or say anything bad about Amanda. Sam rolled her eyes. "She left with Anoush, and we haven't heard from her since then. Anthony may have, but I haven't."

She wasn't surprised that Daniel was trying to stick up for her, that was just how he was. "And Johnny is a great dad. Have you seen him try and play video games with Anthony?" She asked, unable to keep the smile off her face.

Then there was the occasional prank the two of them pulled off. It was cute, he was a lot like Johnny already.

Daniel still couldn't believe that Amanda had all but cut ties with the kids. She still saw Tony occasionally, but for the most part she had dumped all parental responsibility on Daniel. It wasn't what the terms of their divorce had stated. In fact, Amanda was supposed to have the kids most of the time. Daniel was supposed to have alternate weekends and some holidays.

Not that he was complaining. He loved having his kids around. But he just couldn't understand why Amanda had agreed to the split custody only to walk out on them.

Then again, he didn't understand why Amanda did a lot of the things she did.

"Johnny and Tony are cute together. Both annoying shitheads, but cute." There was something touching to see a technological dinosaur like Johnny trying to get to grips with modern technology so he could play video games with a preteen.

This is when Deacon arrived, brandishing the Mexican food and a bag of soda bottles. "D!" Sam said, getting up and hugging him tightly. "Thank you so much." She said, taking one of the bags from him to set it on the table by them. Miguel got up to hug him too, Deacon sniffing him when he did. Something neither of them caught.

Sam gestured to Daniel. "Deacon, this is our dad, Daniel." She said, Deacon was only about two inches taller than she was, much like Daniel had been in '84. He brushed curls out of his eyes, and stepped forward, offering his hand. "I'm Deacon Hale, it's really awesome to meet you." He said, a soft lilting Greek accent coming out of his mouth.

"I really wish I'd known who you were before now." He said, looking like he wanted to hug Daniel.

Daniel stood and reached out to take Deacon's hand, giving it a shake. What was the protocol for this kind of thing? How did one greet their teenage son that they had no idea existed before a few hours ago? Was hugging too much? Not enough? There was no doubting that Deacon was his son though, it was almost like looking into a mirror to the past.

"Hey. It's good to meet you, Deacon." Where did he even start? Should he apologise? Why weren't there handbooks for this kind of thing?

"I'm sorry. If I had known... I would've reached out..."

Deacon stepped forward and hugged him, tightly. After he'd stepped back, he said, "It's... I'm not mad. I know you would have been. I'm so sorry my mom lied. I didn't.. . I don't talk to her now, I am so mad at her for keeping us apart when she didn't have to." He definitely sounded angry.

"I just want to be a part of the family." He brushed curls out of his eyes, his soft olive skin was tanned more than usual. "Before I met Sam, I was in Italia, I was visiting Rome. There is extended family there." He said, and hugged Daniel again, tightly. "I'm so glad to meet you. Even if it's a sad occasion."

Sam had gotten into the bag, and she handed Daniel some soft tacos. "Eat, Dad, we could be here awhile."

"I'm sure she had her reasons." He didn't know what they were, but she probably had them. Yet again, Daniel was playing the good guy and not talking bad about one of the kids' moms.

"Rome, huh? You enjoy it out there?" Daniel tried to make conversation, even if he had no idea where to even begin. So many lost years. How could they just pick up as if they weren't strangers?

He took the tacos from Sam with a soft smile. "Thanks, sweetheart. And thanks Deacon for bringing the food."

Deacon grinned. "Yeah, Rome was amazing. Other than fending off questions about why I'm gay. Not in a homophobic way, necessarily, just in a they think I'll never have kids kind of way. Apparently they don't know it's the 21st century and things are different."

"Yeah, that's insane." Sam said, rolling her eyes. "But I'm so jelly you went. I'd love to go see Italy." She said, handing Miguel his own food, and then passing around sodas.

"Of course. I've been wanting to meet you anyway, and I couldn't let you go without food. Sam's right, you could be here for awhile." Deacon said, although he didn't think Daniel was right about his mother having any other reason than she was a bitch.

Daniel shot Sam a look. "Is that a not so subtle hint that you'd like me to buy you a ticket? You're still a minor and your mom still legally has custody of you the majority of the time, but if it's okay with her then I have no problem with you going. You and Miguel could both go. It'd be a fun experience."

Life was too short to sit idly by. The fact Johnny was fighting for his life when they should be snuggling in bed watching terrible movies and eating ice cream was proof of that.

"Well I'm glad I got to meet you. Even if the circumstances aren't ideal. I'm guessing since you're gay you don't have a problem with the fact I'm dating a man?"

"No, Dad, I swear, it wasn't a hint. But yeah, I would love to go." Sam said, holding up one of her hands in surrender. She shared a small smile with both her brother and Miguel. "But we'll never get a hold of her to ask her."

Deacon nodded as he pulled some burritos from the bag. "It's fine with me. I actually think it's really cool. Especially since you've had feelings for him since high school. You finally get to be together. I can't wait to meet him too." Deacon said, opening the Pepsi he'd set on the table in front of him.

"He's a great guy, D." Miguel said, smiling. "He's.. he's the father I never had."

"I'll try calling her." If they couldn't get hold of her then Daniel guessed they could just risk it? They couldn't put their lives on hold forever because Amanda was being difficult. He really didn't understand it at all. Even if the divorce had been messy, the kids should always still come first. They didn't just stop being their kids because they were seeing other people now.

Daniel took a bite of his food, even though the thought of eating made his stomach churn. He was too anxious to eat.

"I hope you get to meet him." Johnny would pull through... he had to. Daniel wasn't ready to let go of him, not when it had taken so long to get him in the first place.

Sam touched Daniel's arm. "He's gonna be okay, Dad." She said, she hated this whole thing, but she also wondered if there was something that Daniel wasn't telling her. This had been the flu... when did it turn into internal bleeding? Sam tried to focus on her food, she wasn't trying to make this more nerve wracking on anyone.

"I hope you get to go, Sam, it's really awesome." Deacon said, curls falling over his eyes. He looked at her, and then glanced at Miguel when he wasn't looking. Deacon sighed and tore his gaze away. He had to get over his crush on Miguel, and he knew it. It was going to be hard. He looked at his father. "I'm sure he'll be okay, Papa." Deacon told him, hoping it wasn't too soon to call him that.

He and Sam shared a soft smile.

"I hope you're right." Daniel knew Johnny was a stubborn asshole. He wanted to believe that he was far too stubborn to die on the operating table. But he also knew at the end of the day Johnny was human and even he couldn't out-stubborn death.

His stomach ached with nerves. He barely had an appetite but he knew Sam would worry if he didn't eat, so he forced himself to take a few more bites.

If only he had gotten Johnny to the hospital sooner. Things might have been different.

Sam looked at Miguel. "You want to go down to the gift shop? I want to get something for Papa." She said, and she partly wanted to give Deacon and Daniel some alone time together. Miguel gave her a small smile. "Yeah, okay." He agreed, and gave Sam a kiss. She grabbed up their trash. "We'll be back in a little bit."

Leaning to hug them both, she said, "I've got my phone. Let me know if something happens." Deacon gave her a nod, and watched them walk off. Then he looked back at Daniel. "You can quit pretending you're hungry now, Papa." He told him, putting his own trash back in the bag.

"I know you're not really hungry."

Daniel hugged Sam, pulling her in close so he could kiss her forehead before watching her and Miguel retreat.

He set his half-eaten food aside. "Sorry. I really do appreciate you bringing food for us all. I just... my stomach is doing somersaults. I know he'll be fine. Or rather... I hope he will be. But the way he just crashed so bad in the car... One minute he was fine and talking, the next he was unconscious..."

Daniel sucked in a breath. He could feel his panic rising. He put his head between his knees and counted his breaths. "... Sorry."

"No, Papa, it's okay. I understand. You're worried. It makes complete sense to me." Deacon said, brushing curls out of his eyes again. He moved to sit beside Daniel, and rubbed his back. "Breathe, Papa." Deacon said, he'd had his own share of panic attacks.

He'd spent his life being bullied. He knew the sting of a panic attack. Deacon was short, and while he had some muscles, not very many. He wasn't considered manly enough. And then there was the fact that he was gay. Deacon was used to it, he supposed.

Not that he was ever going to really get over it. "You have to try and stay calm, I know it's bad, but you have to try and think positively." Deacon advised.

	Daniel tried to focus on his breathing. He tried to think back to all the techniques Mr Miyagi had taught him. Eventually his breathing shallowed and evened out and he was able to lift his head without feeling like he was going to hurl chunks. "He needs to pull through. I need to tell him about you." "You'll be able to, I know you will. He's going to be okay." Deacon said, and this is when a doctor came up to them. "Mr. LaRusso?" He asked, and then began to give him the news. "We stopped the internal bleeding, but your partner also took a lot of damage to his kidney. He's going to need a new one. I put him on the list, of course."

Then he paused before he told them the rest. "He'll have to start dialysis, I put him in for a referral to a doctor that can get that started for you."

Daniel felt like the rug had just been pulled from under his feet and he was spiralling. Fuck. They had stopped the bleeding and Johnny hadn't died on the table. That was fantastic news. But his kidney was fucked and he needed dialysis? That was messed up.

Kreese needed to pay for what he had done. But that... that could wait.

He sucked in a breath and tried to steady himself, trying not to look like he was spiralling too badly. "Can I see him?"

"He's in the ICU. Only family, and still, only two in the room at a time." The doctor told him, and then added, "He's not awake yet, he probably won't be for another hour or so, he's gonna be coming out of the anesthesia."

Deacon let out a breath. "Go, Papa. I can wait for Sam and Miggy, let them know what's happened. You should be there when he wakes up." Deacon said, squeezing Daniel's shoulder. He was trying his best to sound chipper. He knew this was bad. But he didn't want Daniel to have a panic attack right now. It wasn't going to help anyone, and Daniel needed to remain calm at the moment.

Daniel pulled Deacon into a hug. "Thank you." He stepped back and patted his arm. "I swear, when things calm down we'll talk properly. You and me. Any questions you have or anything. I promise."

He took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves as he headed to the ICU. He hated hospitals. Hated everything about them. The smell, the sound, the artificial lighting. He had already sat by and watched his father and father figure die. He couldn't lose Johnny.

He took hold of Johnny's hand. "You gave me a scare, baby," he whispered, even though Johnny was still unconscious.
