It’s years prior to the present. Maggie looks a few years younger. She is in a room with only a few chairs, standing in front of a white sheet that has been hung up against a wall. There is a camera focused on her. She’s in the middle of a cold reading.
“No! Jake, don’t do it!” Tears are streaming down her face. “I love you!” She sniffles and stifles a sob. A man, the only other person in the room, stands up and claps. He’s grinning. He walks towards Maggie and as he does so he shuts off the camera.
“That’s the best I’ve heard that scene done all day, Maggie.” He puts a hand on her shoulder. It’s clear that she’s a little uncomfortable, but she smiles awkwardly.
“Thank you.” She turns her torso slightly in an attempt to shake off his hand, but he stays with his hand fixed on her shoulder. Maggie doesn’t say anything, but she’s becoming more and more uncomfortable by the second. “I feel like I can connect with the character.”
“And it shows! I’m thinking I might as well just give you the part now.” Her face lights up with a smile.
“Really? I mean, seriously?” She looks hopeful.
“Seriously.” The man uses his hand to pull her a little closer and he lowers his mouth to hers. Maggie jerks her head away.
“Whoa. I mean, I don’t mean to offend you, but I’m just here for work.” Her voice is a little smaller than usual. She’s heard about auditions gone bad like this one. She just hopes that if she’s polite about turning him down that she’ll still get the job.
“This is part of working in this town, Maggie. C’mon, loosen up.” He lowers his mouth to hers again, this time forcing her into a kiss. She tries to shout and object but it’s muffled by his lips against hers. Finally, she bites down hard on the man’s lower lip, causing him to jerk away quickly, a little bit of blood dripping down his chin.
“You bitch!” He shoves her and she stumbles back a foot or so. “You’re never going to work in this town again! I’m gonna make sure of it!” Maggie starts to cry. She runs to pick up her purse from the side of the room and runs for the hills, convinced that her acting career is over.
