James has a buzzcut. He’s 16 years old, and he drives his convertible with his red-headed companion. The windows are down and her hair whips around wildly. As he pulls up to her mansion, they exchange a goodbye kiss.
“Okay, but I really have to get moving. I’m supposed to meet my dad in 15 and I don’t want to be late.” As she pouted and got out, he winked at her and said, “See you tomorrow, Olive”
He didn’t see her blow the kiss because he was speeding off to the restaurant. He arrived in record time, he sees his father. sitting at the table already, checking his watch. He gives his father an apologetic smile as he sits across the table from him.
“You’re late.” The father says, raising an eyebrow.
James checks his own watch and sees that he’s not actually late, but he nods anyway, “I know, sorry, there was traffic.”
“It’s fine.” He dismisses, obviously frustrated until the waitress appears to take their orders and any trace of disappointment washes from his face, transforming into the charm that he works so well. “Hello sweetheart,” he smirks at her, “how about you get the two of us started with a bottle of Gaja Barbaresco.”
“Would you like an appetizer?” She asks pleasantly.
James’s father looks the woman up and down flirtatiously for a moment, then finally responds, “How about we start with the wine, huh, cutie?”
She fights the urge to roll her eyes, and instead smiles again, “Yes sir.” And she’s off.
“So, how’s everything going with Olive?” He asks James casually.
“Great, homecoming’s coming up. We’re both pretty stoked.” He gives a geeky smile under his large glasses.
“Oh? That’s nice. Actually, the reason I called you to come meet me so soon was because I have good news.” He lifts the corner of his mouth as if he’s telling a joke.
“Yeah? What’s that, dad?” James asks hopefully.
“I was talking to Lucien today, Amelia’s father? We’ve decided that you and his daughter Amelia will get married. Her entire inheritance and yours will be combined the moment you place the wedding band on her finger.” He smiled proudly.
James tried to hide the disappointment in his face as he received the news. He didn’t want to marry her. She’s so much younger than him and his friends, and he hardly even knows anything about her besides that she knows how to L33t 5p34k and plays video games. He lifts his gaze up to his fathers to see that it looks like his father is reading his face for a reaction. James nods, “Yes, dad.”
He smiles brightly, and as if on que, the waitress returns with the wine and pours the glasses, then places the bottle in the ice bucket. His father raises his glass, “To James and Amelia Carson” his father chirps cheerfully. James lifts his glass and clinks it against his father’s while smiling flatly.
