I'd like to turn to a type of song that people like myself find ourselves subjected to with increasing frequency as time goes on, and that is the college alma mater. You'll find yourself at a reunion of grads, and old undergrads, and eh... somebody will start croaking out one of these things and everyone will gradually join in -- each in his own key, of course -- until the place is just soggy with nostalgia. Well, a typical such song might be called Bright College Days, and might go like this. Bright college days, O carefree days that fly, To thee we sing with our glasses raised on high. Let's drink a toast as each of us recalls Ivy-covered professors in ivy-covered halls. Turn on the spigot, pour the beer and swig it, and gaudeamus igit-ur. I was looking a bit haggard, so I had my hair cut. The person I wanted was out of town, so I had some tiny girl cut it. I just wanted a trim, but ended up with short sides and barely any hair on the top. Since I can't ask for it to be glued back on, I'm stuck with it. It's not completely horrible.

On a less annoying note, my mum called. It was nice to hear her voice. Why am I even announcing this? I have also returned to my work.

I have now returned from India where I was visiting my brothers and my best friend, Dōsta! I have come back here just shy of Raksha Bandhan! This year, the festival holiday of Raksha Bandhan (also Rakhi Purnima) falls on the 2nd of August. It is a holiday where brothers and sisters express their sibling love for each other and the sister ties the rakhi to her brother's wrist as a prayer to ensure his safety and well-being. It also symbolizes the brother's vow to protect the sister.

I have brought some back from India! Give one to your brother on the 2nd of August and be thankful for the bonds of family on this auspicious day. But I think it is okay if you share with your sibling of same sex. I do not want to isolate people. Namastē!

In a week, I'm leaving to see my dad. I'm nervous and excited and antsy. He's having a hard time. Illinois is having a bad drought and the corn isn't doing so hot. He sent me a picture. They look nasty.

I watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze. Now I have Ninja Rap stuck in my head.

Due to the fireworks subverting my attempts at starting my class off on the right tone, I feel I must apologize to my students for the way things have been. Our bird-watching and identifying attempts have been woefully stalled, except the two birds I suspect are my brothers and as such I've had to rethink my lesson plan for the remainder of the session. Were I the type to drink, this situation would have me indulging.

A student pointed me in the direction of a Native American-based horoscope. I find my sign incredibly fitting. In fact, I might have been a bit confused had I not been born under the Raven sign.
