Plot Post: First Encounters
Who: Everyone at the Facility
What: R-Day (the R is for Ross)
Where: The Avenger's Facility
When: Sunday Afternoon
Rating/Warning: TBD

Thanks to their intel, Tony knew it was coming before the tanks arrived. He'd called Steve first. It felt like the right thing to do. Next, he got T'Challa on the phone to let him know what was going down.

By 1pm EST, the compound knew. Steve chose to send a message over the network so that even those off-planet would know what was happening.

"Bad News. We have US military incoming. ETA is 1 hour. Do not engage.

Captain Rogers, King T'Challa, Carter, and I are handling this."

Tony knew, even as he sent it, this probably wasn't going to end well.

"Those on the K. Bacon, do not return to Earth. Please keep off comms for now. I'll update you soon."

When Ross arrived, Tony was standing outside of the compound with a small entourage. He kept his face stern, but he was not in his Iron Man suit. Instead, he was dressed in his suit and tie, as if attending a business meeting.

Ross's entourage was let in without much in the way to stop them. Tony had communicated they leave the heavy military outside, for now, warning that any show of force wouldn't end well for anybody.

When Ross stepped out of the armored vehicle, he removed his sunglasses and gave Tony the once over.

"Stark. What the hell have you done now?"

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Cut the bullshit, Stark. We know what's going on here. Wormholes crossing dimensions. And time. You're gathering a small army and you thought you could keep it hidden. You're lucky we didn't nuke your ass weeks ago."

Tony glanced at Steve, quietly willing him to hold back for now. "I don't think bombing a civilian research facility would look too well, do you? On American soil, no less."

Ross stiffened. "The only reason you're still around is because the US government has intel that there might be a bigger threat on the horizon."

"So you're not all stupid. Good. We can work with that."

**This is a MAJOR plot thread that will have long-term implications in game.

Any attacks made first against the military might end badly.

Characters' deaths are discouraged, but injuries are possible. If there is a battle, a dice roll will be used to determine winners/losers.

More threads will be added depending on the directions characters go (for example, a thread will be added if someone starts fighting).

An ending thread where characters can react to the outcome will be added later.

After some persuasion (Sam), Bucky headed out to meet Ross with the others, hanging back some but looking intimidating and standing behind Steve as the Secretary of State stepped out of his vehicle.

Ross noticed exactly who Tony had with him. And he would comment later about the escaped war criminals being housed at the facility, but they had bigger things going on for now, and he wasn't quite ready to start a fight with these guys on American soil.

Not yet.

Loki had projected himself back to the compound. To anyone on Ross's side, he wore the face of a stranger. To anyone who wasn't, he wore his own. He had quickly scouted out the entourage of both side s and then approached someone who stood a little bit farther in the back.

"So, who is that guy?" He nodded towards the agent in the car. His expression was one of eager innocence.

Bucky nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard Loki, glancing at the man with a glare before shaking his head and whispering.

"How are you even here??"

"I'm a sorcerer," he commented as if the answer to Barnes' question was an obvious one. "Your ignorance, however, does not answer my question. Who is that guy?" A smile. He was a friendly bystander, just curious for information.

Bucky rolled his eyes. He was getting damn tired of magic. "Seriously, I am starting to get why Steve doesn't like you. This is Ross." He kept his voice low.

"Secretary of State and apparently a pain in the ass."

Loki ignored the comment. Midgardians he learned were very touchy when you pointed out their flaws. And if you asked him, they had plenty.

"Ah..." His face shifted from Ross to Sharon. He couldn't quite see her face but Ross' face clearly gave away his dismay. "So... he doesn't seem to like the blond very much, hmm?"

"I don't think he likes anyone much if we're being honest," Bucky muttered, rolling his metal arm a little as if he were trying to hold it back. He felt tense. And not just because he was talking to a ghost.

"And why is that? I thought you were all heroes..." Had that not been their status? Midgardians were very puzzling in their worship.

Bucky really wanted to punch the snark off this guy's face, but knew better than to even twitch at it. Loki was the sort to get under your skin, and Bucky was a soldier through and through. He could stand without reacting, even if his fist was itching for it.

"Yeah, well, that's the weird thing about humans. One man's hero is another man's supervillain."

"I see." Not that Loki would disagree. His own family history was proof of that. "And what deed has rendered you villains in his eye?"

"Existing," Bucky muttered, though that was far from it. "And being controlled. You know something about mind control, right?" He kept his voice down, but his gaze was clearly aimed toward Loki.

He'd never really met the guy. But he knew the stories. And Bucky had issues regarding that kind of manipulation.

"You asked."

A smile sprang on his face. It was a token of respect. The man had quickly turned the conversation around on him.

Loki took a moment to reply. The thought had brought him back to Thanos. The second time he had met the man was not the only time he spent in terror. "I do. Sorcerery is not the only way one can control the mind." His tone was quite. A gentle seriousness to it. Yet, it did not waver. "But I think you know that, don't you?"

Bucky didn't know what the guy was smiling at. He didn't like it.

"I do. And?" Three words, met with a firm stare. Bucky even met his eyes as his jaw set.

It was almost a challenge to see if the god would flinch or say anything else that might get under his skin.

Oh, he could see the challenge in the man's demeanour, feel it in his bones. It took him a moment to hold back the urge to say something meant to crawl under the other man's skin. It was unwise. He needed allies against what was out there. He needed to get along.

His tone was calm and collected as he continued. "Then you know that there is more behind a man's evil deed than meets the eye." A moment of hesitation. It was getting too personal. But the people around him already thought the worst of him. So he continued. He had shifted his gaze from the man beside him to Ross and the negotiation. His words were quiet enough so that only Bucky could understand them. But there was a subtle rage in them. "If you take a man at his worst, Mr. Barnes, you can break them and you can mould them to your wishes. Men like Thanos have always done that."

Bucky held his tongue, though it took a little effort. He knew too well what Loki meant by that. Bucky had more than enough evil deeds to make up for, things that could define him. What did Natasha refer to it as?

A lot of red on the ledger.

"Yeah. Tell me you don't have experience doing just that." He wasn't necessarily calling Loki out. Bucky was giving him a chance to defend himself.

Loki huffed a laugh at that. Of course he had experience in that. His expression hardened soon after. He had used people, he still would. But he would never be like Thanos. The mere thought added anger to his words. It was soft and subtle. Despite this, it very clearly betrayed how much he despised the thought. "I am not a man without cruelty. We both know that. Sometimes it is needed in this universe. Especially when you are in a position of responsibility. I am, however, and never will be like that man. I do not take away children from their homes, pretend to care about them while forming them to be my tools. Thanos has only ever cared about his own ideas and visions. He would stop at nothing to reach his misguided goal." He contemplated for a second. But then decided that information likely had already passed through the halls. How could it not? "I gave my life so my brother would stand a chance. Do not compare me to that monster."

Loki's demeanor surprised Bucky. It wasn't at all what he'd been expecting when the 'projection' appeared next to him. His vibranium hand clenched a bit, though, before releasing again.

"Yeah. But that still doesn't make you the good guy. You're going to have to prove that part."

That was Bucky's way of giving him a chance. He wasn't implying Loki was like Thanos. He acknowledged that he knew about the sacrifice. But he also knew Loki had a lot to make up for after what he'd done.

"Then again, I guess we both have something to prove." A quiet acknowledgment that Bucky's past wasn't exactly his own, either.

An eyebrow raised. A low chuckle. Good guy... it was an interesting thought. "Sometimes good is not what is needed..." Loki finally said. His gaze was dancing over the interaction that unfolded in front of the. "Ross - he likely thinks he is just that. A good guy." He shifted his head to the side. "Many might agree." There was an amusement sparkling in his eyes as he watched the puppets dance for a moment. "I think I prefer to be useful rather than good."

"Useful to who?" Bucky caught onto that, glancing back at him and knowing full well the guy probably had his own agenda going. He might not be Thanos, but Bucky wasn't going to trust him as far as he could throw him.

Just because Loki wasn't out to literally murder them didn't mean Bucky was willing to turn his back just yet.

"Ross does what he thinks is right. Just like Tony did. Just like Steve did. Good isn't always seen universally. But Ross is also doing something that can put everyone in danger. It's not about right or wrong, it's about orders for him."

Another smile. At least, the man caught onto the important questions. He remembered his brother's offer. Pride making his form stand just a little taller. "Asgard. Naturally," he said and at least at this moment, he believed in it.

"But tell me, what is it that Ross is after..." he asked, curious. He noticed that the guy on the far end had spinach stuck between his teeth. An obviously important piece of information that needed to be passed on to the people on the Kevin Bacon. Bucky, however, would notice none of that.

"Uh-huh." Bucky shook his head. "Asgard's gone, right?" He knew Loki meant to be people but Bucky wasn't going to let that one go. "It's not a bad thing to want to protect people- but your planet's gone. It's your people now."

He grimaced. "Dunno. Probably wants to take us all in. Definitely wants the machine if he knows about it."

"Of course, it's the people..." Despite the softness of his words, there was an edge to them. A warning. He didn't know what the other man was playing at but he had decided he already did not like it. "Are you suggesting that my people should shed their identity mere because they have lost their ground?" A sense of protection sharpened his tone even more. "Asgard's greatness has not been founded by soil, Mr. Barnes."

While he had taken in Bucky's words about Ross, the conversation about Asgard took priority for now. He would return to the government agent when room revealed itself.

"That's not what I mean. I'm saying that if you want to survive, you need to adapt. You know that. Which means when they get here, they're going to have to adapt." He didn't seem too flustered by the comment or implication.

"And it's not as easy as you think. Even for Asgardians."

Or they could change their surroundings. Loki did not say any of that. "Like you are adapting, hmm? And what does that adaptation look like for you? Because, right now, seeing this-" He nodded towards Ross. "- it makes me concerned. If this is how they treat you just because you are a little different, how will they treat us?

A little different? Bucky wondered what Loki knew about him, looking at the Asgardian with a raised eyebrow. "You know who I am, right?" He was almost indignant. Actually, no. Nevermind.

He didn't want Loki to know.

"Ross isn't everyone. If this works out here for your people, it'll be good. Just....try not to screw it up."
