Is it just me, or are there only a handful of RP options around these days? Everything is either a) Harry Potter, b) superheroes, c) supernatural-themed, d) celeb/faux celeb. And the few games that don't follow the "norm" are basically gpsls with little to no activity going on.

This isn't a complaint, really. I'm genuinely curious. Is that all the majority of people are interested in?

Any tips for getting a game off the ground which doesn't include the aforementioned settings?

I think it's more a case of the long tail. There are a few things a lot of people are interested in, and a lot of things few people are interested in. It's probable (IMO) that most people are interested in things that aren't the few big things, but everyone is interested in different things, so it's hard to put together a game.

I wonder if anyone has ever considered putting together a small fandom game, i.e. like a multi-fandom game, but only small fandoms allowed.

True that. It'd be cool if something cropped up that kind of catered to everyone's (or, not everyone, but more than there is) interests. I only do original games these days and that seems like an even harder niche to carve a way into.

A gazillion months later just because I want to chime in my 2c -- I definitely agree with anon here. Part of the problem is that there's tons of small unique canons that I would love to explore in a non-panfandom setting (the VFD in A Series of Unfortunate Events! The Half-Made World! Galavant-esque fantasy satire! a Fast and the Furious GPSL!), but the odds of getting together a cohort of good like-minded interested players is, well, tough. So wider umbrellas like superheroes/paranormal tend to be the most popular game premises.

[info]nicepants, is there an itch in particular that you want but haven't gotten scratched? I've seen some other stuff -- e.g. zombies, spies, Final Fantasy -- do the rounds sometimes, so there's definitely room for other things that aren't panfan/HP/superheroes/paranormal/celeb. It's just more rare, as you've noticed.
