Day 32
Who: George Lass and Lucas Scott
What: George finally gets the guts to go knock on Lucas' door and ask him for some basketball lessons, like he offered
When: Day 32, afternoon
Where: Lucas' residential building, at his door (probably will move on to a more suitable location for basketball practising)
Status: Incomplete
Rating: PG just to be safe

George had thought about it most morning. Not all the time, of course, she'd been in too good a company to obsess over anything, but she had definitely thought about it.
In all fairness, Lucas had said he was serious about the offer, and that she could go knock on his door at any time. However, something like that was easier said than done for George, who, for some reason, dreaded to begin human interaction.

Finally, after much thought and downright obsession (after a while) George decided to walk over to Lucas' building and knock. Just knock. It wasn't like she was going to force anyone to do anything, and it wasn't like knocking on doors wasn't an everyday sort of thing. People knocked, all the time, because they had to. And now, George had to, as well. Because she was bored, because she wanted to do something under that awesome sun other than lie down and sleep, and, if she was honest, because she wouldn't mind seeing Lucas again. Also, because if she didn't, Lucas wouldn't know she was outside.

As she finished this entangled train of thought, she arrived at his door. Taking a deep breath and sporting a look of dread that was akin to her being forced to kick a puppy, George knocked.

George blushed. He'd noticed. "Damn..." She muttered under her breath.

She looked at him with a wide gaze. How the hell was she supposed to know how to take a shot? George reported herself to the occasional television game, and positioned herself like she'd seen them do.

"This it?" She asked, picking the ball up with one hand above and one beyond.

"Not exactly," he said. He stood behind her and placed his hands over her, guiding them into the right position.

"OK, that's more like it," he said stepping back again.

"Try taking a shot," he said.

George was holding the ball so tightly, she thought she might burst it eventually. Luckily, she didn't.

She licked her lips and sniggered, shaking her head. The ball was most likely to end up going through someone's window, but she wasn't going to stand there holding it all day.

George took a shot. "Aaaand she fails miserably!" She yelled, half-laughing, as she watched the ball going everywhere but inside the hoop, or even near it. She turned around to face Lucas, shrugging.

"That's OK," he said, giving her a warm smile. "We can try again."

He ran to pick up the ball and handed it back to her. He stood behind her again and placed his hands over her, guiding them into the right position.

"OK bend your knees and then stand up straight before you go to take a shot," he said, as he waited for her to do so, his hands still over hers guiding the ball.

George shook her head in mock disbelief. "I can't believe you talked me into this. I can't believe I talked myself into this!"

Her heart was pounding a little - been a long time since she had done anything remotely requiring physical capacity - when she positioned herself right, like Lucas had said. "Bend the knees. Okay." She muttered. She wouldn't want to think about it, but she was enjoying the human contact, too, even if it was just a basketball coach teaching her to play. It felt nice. She stood up straight, and then stopped. "So, I stand up straight and then release?"

"It'll be OK," he said softly.

"Yeah, stand up and release," he said. "And don't worry if you don't get it in. It takes practice. And I have every confidence in you that you'll get it in by the time we're finished."

George smiled. This guy should be a public speaker, a confidence booster - professionally. He was good at it, probably as good as he was at coaching basketball to completely inept people.

She bent her knees again, and then as she stood up, her hands released the ball when she stretched her arms. Hopefully she had given it a good boost.

Unfortunately George was as strong as she was tall - not that much - and it didn't reach the loop again. She turned to face Lucas, but didn't say anything, she simply smirked.

"Well it was closer this time," he said smiling at her.

He grabbed the ball and handed it to her again.

"OK, this time I'll stand back and let you try it yourself. I'll be your own personal cheering section," he said playfully.

"Just believe you can do it. Believe it and it you'll do it."

He knew that probably sounded corny but he didn't care. He wanted to see her get the ball in the hoop.

George caught the ball and smiled. "You know, I never liked cheerleaders. You might just change my mind about them." She winked, and positioned herself to try again.

Bent knees, release while standing up straight...And putting some strength into it. George released the ball and while it didn't go in, this time it actually touched the hoop, albeit slightly so.

George dropped her arms to the side of her body and stared, in awe.

He blushed a little when she said she'd never liked cheerleaders. Most of his previous girlfriends had been cheerleaders.

He smiled when she winked at him though.

"Well done, you're getting closer," he said happily.

George stopped to catch her breath, and a bottle of water materialized on her hand.

"Hey, great timing." George said, opening the bottle. "So, what now I keep repeating it until the ball finally, magically, drops on the loop?" She took a sip.

George nodded and smiled. That smile of his must move mountains where he was from. She picked the ball up and cracked her neck. She was finally getting the hang of it, it seemed, and it was kind of pointless to stop now.

She did her thing, like Lucas had taught her, and released the ball.

It bounced a little on the hoop, and then, finally, after what seemed like hours, it went in.

"HA!" George threw her arms in the air.

"I knew you could do it," he said smiling widely when he released her.

Oh, a hug. A hug felt good. Nobody hugged her other than Mason on occasion, and he wasn't there. She hugged him back happily.

"Thanks for the pep talk, it really helped! You must be everyone's favorite coach."

He chuckled when she said he must be everyone's favorite coach.

"Well I don't know about that," he said, running his hand through his hair and smiling at her.

"But you did really well. You caught on fast and I'm really proud."

She still knew nothing of the rules of the game itself, but being able to toss the ball into the hoop was good enough for now.

"It's not as hard as it looks, though I'm pretty sure I got lucky." She said, smiling sweetly. "Thanks."

George took another sip from the bottle of water.

"Yeah, sure." She said. She was pumped up enough that she wouldn't mind keeping at it the whole afternoon - provided she wouldn't get tired before the afternoon ended.

"OK," he said grabbing the ball.

"Any point you score before his line is worth two points," he said pointing to a line. "Any score you make after this line is worth three points. One point is awarded to an unguarded shot taken from behind the free throw line while the clock is stopped," he said pointing to the free throw line. "This usually happens when a player is fouled and awarded a free."

"There is four common forms of fouling. They are blocking which is impeding the progress of an opponent by extending one or both arms horizontally or getting in the path of a moving player, charging which is running into a stationary player while you are moving with the ball, hacking which is where the player hits the arm or hand of the person holding the ball and holding which is where the player holds the person with or without the ball."

"And then there are violations which are traveling which is moving illegally with the ball, the three second rule which is where an offensive player remains in the key, the free throw lane which is the area under the basket, for more than three seconds and double dribble which is where a player dribbles the ball with both hands at the same time or they stop and then start dribbling again. Violations also earn the other team a free."

He paused and smiled at her.

"You following so far?" he asked.

"I...guess..." George replied, which was actually true. She wasn't sure whether her brain had registered what Lucas had been saying or not. Basketball sure had a lot of rules. "So basically, you can't touch another player. Ever."

He laughed softly.

"Yeah, pretty much. It's a very non-contact sport," he said.

"But it's still a lot of fun to play. I loved playing it, when I was able."

He missed not being able to full the game to his full ability like he used to.

"What do you mean, when you were able?" George looked at him worryingly.

George didn't say anything. She could imagine what it was like to want to do something and not being able to, for reasons that surpassed her control.

She looked down at her feet, completely at a loss as to what to say. She could say she was sorry to hear that, which was true, but it probably wouldn't do Lucas any good. Still, it was better than not saying anything at all. "I'm sorry..." She finally mumbled, still looking away.
