Day 32
Who: George Lass and Lucas Scott
What: George finally gets the guts to go knock on Lucas' door and ask him for some basketball lessons, like he offered
When: Day 32, afternoon
Where: Lucas' residential building, at his door (probably will move on to a more suitable location for basketball practising)
Status: Incomplete
Rating: PG just to be safe

George had thought about it most morning. Not all the time, of course, she'd been in too good a company to obsess over anything, but she had definitely thought about it.
In all fairness, Lucas had said he was serious about the offer, and that she could go knock on his door at any time. However, something like that was easier said than done for George, who, for some reason, dreaded to begin human interaction.

Finally, after much thought and downright obsession (after a while) George decided to walk over to Lucas' building and knock. Just knock. It wasn't like she was going to force anyone to do anything, and it wasn't like knocking on doors wasn't an everyday sort of thing. People knocked, all the time, because they had to. And now, George had to, as well. Because she was bored, because she wanted to do something under that awesome sun other than lie down and sleep, and, if she was honest, because she wouldn't mind seeing Lucas again. Also, because if she didn't, Lucas wouldn't know she was outside.

As she finished this entangled train of thought, she arrived at his door. Taking a deep breath and sporting a look of dread that was akin to her being forced to kick a puppy, George knocked.

George took another sip from the bottle of water.

"Yeah, sure." She said. She was pumped up enough that she wouldn't mind keeping at it the whole afternoon - provided she wouldn't get tired before the afternoon ended.

"OK," he said grabbing the ball.

"Any point you score before his line is worth two points," he said pointing to a line. "Any score you make after this line is worth three points. One point is awarded to an unguarded shot taken from behind the free throw line while the clock is stopped," he said pointing to the free throw line. "This usually happens when a player is fouled and awarded a free."

"There is four common forms of fouling. They are blocking which is impeding the progress of an opponent by extending one or both arms horizontally or getting in the path of a moving player, charging which is running into a stationary player while you are moving with the ball, hacking which is where the player hits the arm or hand of the person holding the ball and holding which is where the player holds the person with or without the ball."

"And then there are violations which are traveling which is moving illegally with the ball, the three second rule which is where an offensive player remains in the key, the free throw lane which is the area under the basket, for more than three seconds and double dribble which is where a player dribbles the ball with both hands at the same time or they stop and then start dribbling again. Violations also earn the other team a free."

He paused and smiled at her.

"You following so far?" he asked.

"I...guess..." George replied, which was actually true. She wasn't sure whether her brain had registered what Lucas had been saying or not. Basketball sure had a lot of rules. "So basically, you can't touch another player. Ever."

He laughed softly.

"Yeah, pretty much. It's a very non-contact sport," he said.

"But it's still a lot of fun to play. I loved playing it, when I was able."

He missed not being able to full the game to his full ability like he used to.

George nodded in understanding. She looked at him abruptly after he mentioned he used to be able to play.

"What do you mean, when you were able?" George looked at him worryingly.

"I uh, I have a heart condition called HCM. It's a genetic heart defect. I was allowed to play for fifteen minutes a game and we got to the State Championship and after I had a heart attack cos I didn't take my meds."

George didn't say anything. She could imagine what it was like to want to do something and not being able to, for reasons that surpassed her control.

She looked down at her feet, completely at a loss as to what to say. She could say she was sorry to hear that, which was true, but it probably wouldn't do Lucas any good. Still, it was better than not saying anything at all. "I'm sorry..." She finally mumbled, still looking away.

"It's OK," he said softly. "I mean, I get to teach the game I love all the time."

He gave her a warm smile.

"It's OK really. I've come to terms with it. I didn't react very well when I first found out."

George smiled sadly. "I bet you didn't. I bet you went through the so-called stages of grief, and tried your best to deny you had the disease, did stupid things and then realized there was nothing you could do to fight it. Except for the stupid things that lead nowhere and made things worse, that is."

She was talking about her own experience, as well, because it had nothing to do with disease, but she felt like Lucas' problem could easily be compared to the rules her new condition had established for her in regards to her family.

"I stopped taking my medication because I didn't want to let it slow me down. I didn't want this disease to stop me being able to live my life the way I wanted to. Then when my Uncle Keith was murdered I realized the mistake I'd made and I told my mom and coach."

George nodded. "Death has away of putting things into perspective." She thought back to when she finally stopped trying to be with her family, and decided to watch from afar instead. "I get it."

"You've been through something similar haven't you?" he asked softly.

He walked over to her and hugged her to him.

"I'm sorry too George."

George nodded softly. "It's complicat-" And then he pulled her into a hug and George just stopped talking. Maybe he needed this hug more than she did, so she did her best, and hugged him back.

He gave her a soft warm smile.

George smiled weakly and looked down again. "I don't think you'd understand if I told you the whole story..." She hadn't pulled away from Lucas, even though they had stopped hugging. For some reason, she didn't feel like it just yet.

George sighed, and looked Lucas straight in the eyes.

"Okay. I died. I died, but instead of actually dying, I got tagged, and turned into a reaper. So, in a way, I never really died. I mean I was buried, what was left of me, anyway, but I kept existing." She paused, shook her head - she couldn't believe she was actually telling him this. Telling Andy was different, he had started by saying he was a freak himself. - and licked her lips.

"Anyway, to other mortals, I had another body. Even when I looked in the mirror, it wasn't me, it was someone else. So, for obvious reasons, I had to let go of my family, even though I stayed close by. But of course I didn't want to let go of them, I couldn't conceive seeing them grieving for me when I was right there and I couldn't even tell them I was okay. So I tried, and I tried, and I lost some of my memories trying to prove to my mother I was me, and it still didn't work, and she felt like shit afterwards. Until I gave up." George sighed, with a hint of tears in her eyes. She was now waiting for the look of horror in Lucas' face, and his hands getting off her shoulders, and him making some stupid excuse to leave. Any second now.

He looked at her as she spoke. It sounded a little unbelievable to him but something in the tone of her voice told her she was speaking the truth.

"Wow," he breathed out. "That must have been really hard for you. Seeing your family grieve for you while you're still there. I'm so sorry George," he said hugging her tightly to him and rubbing her back soothingly.

George's jaw dropped a little when Lucas hugged her again, instead of running for the hills. "Really?!" She asked, her voice muffled by her face against his shoulder. Soon, though, she could no longer care. She just closed her eyes and appreciated the comfort of his hug and his hand rubbing her back, and hugged him tighter.

"I am a little freaked out to be honest but I believe you. I saw my Uncle Keith after he'd been murdered. He came to be and told me to open my eyes to what had happened the day he'd been murdered. And later I found out it was because the person I thought had murdered him actually hadn't been the person who'd murdered him. And the way you spoke when you told me, it told me you were telling the truth. So I do believe you."

"So you can do that when you cross over..." George mused out loud. "I'm sorry about your uncle. And I'm glad you found his murdered." She still had her arms around him, and felt a little weird letting go, but also felt weird remaining there.

"But I'm me. Right now, here, you're looking at the real me. Something about this planet reverted me back. I see myself in the mirror. And I'm alive, I promise. I have a heartbeat. I'm just alive under special conditions, is all..." She smiled warmly.
