Day Thirty-One
Who: Shannon Rutherford and Sam Tyler
What: You heal my wounds and I'll heal yours...
When: Day 31 after dinner
Where: The bar
Rating: PG-13 for language
Status: Complete

Well, if Sam Tyler wasn't interested in a quick fuck to put their problems aside, Shannon could understand that, she supposed. In fact, she had a lot more respect for him, for it, if she was honest. The fact that he had a girlfriend back wherever he came from wasn't something she could've personally cared less about. She had Sayid, but Sayid wasn't here, so as far as Shannon was concerned, fair game. He had Annie and even though Annie wasn't here, he was committed. Admirable, if not a little annoying.

It seemed to Shannon that she and Sam had a bit in common - the fact that they had no friends here yet and the people they cared about were back home. Well. Maybe home for him; not for her. Home was a term she had learned to use very loosely, lately.

The idea of sitting at the bar with the golem in front of her was about as appealing now as it had been the other night with Greg, so she took her drink and, with a glare in the golem's general direction, she sashayed away and took a seat at one of the tables. She hadn't necessarily done it on purpose, but she'd chosen a different table, this time.

Sipping at her drink, she looked down at her watch - one she'd sorely missed the whole time she'd been on the Island and had asked the Planet to replace. She'd have to take it slow with this drink, considering the fact that all she'd been able to stomach for dinner was a passion fruit and an apple. God, she hoped that would let up soon... Nothing worse than having all she wanted at her fingertips and still not being able to stomach real food.

If Sam didn't show up soon, she'd call it a night; go back to her room, make use of the ballet bar again, and then cozy up on the damn floor because the stupid bed was still too soft compared to the sand to which she'd become accustomed. Hopefully, though, he would. Already, she'd unofficially adopted him as a friend and that was saying an awful lot about the guy, especially since she'd never met him in person. Part of her hoped he wasn't attractive, because if he was, that'd be all the more difficult for her to keep her cool and use him for what she wanted him for: an outlet for her emotions. Someone who sounded as broken as she did was perfect. No one would have to know that she was an emotional wreck except for Sam Tyler and she doubted he'd shout it from the rooftops, because he sounded like he was in pretty much the same boat.

So now, she just had to wait for him to show up. With another sip of her drink she crossed her legs and leaned back against her chair. He had until she finished the drink and she'd bail. Hopefully, he wouldn't disappoint.

Sam chuckled, agreeing with her. It certainly did feel awkward, both of them sizing each other up and not knowing if they were quite ready to trust one another. So she wanted to leave? Well he wasn't a man to force a woman to stay. So being the gentleman, he stood up, offering a hand to shake and to help her out of her seat.

"It was nice to look at you too, Shannon," he said with a grin. "Perhaps we can get that discussion in some other time."

God, he wasn't even going to try and talk her into staying? He wasn't...gonna try and get her to go back to his room? Really? Either he was a really good actor...or he really and truly epitomized this nice guy shtick. Shannon couldn't decide whether she was impressed or affronted. She decided, therefore, on a happy medium - a little bit of both.

Though, when he complimented her offhandedly by parroting her, she smiled and took the offered hand, standing and smoothing down her skirt with her free one. "Maybe," she replied vaguely. Yeah, maybe if she ever bothered to come out of her room again. It wasn't like she had to, after all, right? She didn't count the group activities. Those sucked ass, but they were mandatory and thusly totally did not count. The thing was, she had everything she needed right in her room. A place to sleep, a deep, old-style bathtub, books and magazines, her practice bar, and of course, at her whim, food and drink. The only reason to come out, really, was to socialize and so far, Shannon hadn't seen anyone in the journals she was interested in hanging out with. Greg, she supposed, if she randomly became desperate for attention, but he asked too many fucking questions.

"Although, if you ever find yourself lonely..." she added suggestively, giving him a flirtatious grin as she took her hand away again. "Have a good night, Sam," she said and nodded to him once before starting away.

Normally, she'd have just gone without giving him a chance to respond, but as he was the embodiment of the proverbial Nice Guy, she decided she could bend the rule a little and take it slow, should he have something else to say before she took her leave.

He grinned a little when she said she may finish the discussion with him some time.

"Well I know I certainly would enjoy another attempt at a discussion, if you're wiling."

He raised an eyebrow at her suggestion, pushing his own hands deep in his pocket. He was never use to women being this obvious with their flirtation, having been in the 70's for too long. After all, in 2006 women were far more open but having spent a fair few years in the 70's he was more use to women being more pulled back and within themselves

"I'll keep you in mind," he said with a wink, then watched her as she walked. Remembering the gentleman in him, he quickly caught up, hand on her elbow.

"Let me walk you to your room."

Shannon smirked. "Well, maybe...when you're feeling a bit more conversational, I wouldn't be adverse to it," she teased.

Her own eyebrows arched, impressed, when he came back to her come on with a wink. He touched her elbow and offered to walk her to her room and she shook her head, smiling. How could she turn that down? Maybe he was a little more normal than she was giving him credit for. "All right, then," she agreed, winking back. "No funny business, smart guy," she joked.

With that, she headed out of the bar and toward resident building C. When she got there, she paused before opening the door, because if he wanted to be the gentleman, she sure as shit wasn't going to stop him.

"Perhaps you need to keep prodding at me until I become more conversational," he teased back lightly.

When she agreed, he smiled, nodding his head slightly. Shoving his hands in his pockets as he walked beside her, glancing around as he walked. Of course, he had no idea which building she was in, so he had to just follow on. When they eventually got to the building he guessed was the right one, he reached out and opened the door for her, smiling lightly.

"Ladies first."

Shannon looked over at him, raising her eyebrows and putting a hand on her hip, pretending to look scandalized. "Why, Sam Tyler," she drawled out in a weak attempt at mocking a Southern Belle, "are you flirting?" she joked. A smirk crossed her lips.

He pulled the door open for her and she gave him a genuine smile. "Thank you," she replied and made her way in. "You can...come up if you want," she said with a shrug. "Or, you know, whatever."

Sam chuckled, looking down at the ground for a moment before back at her.

"I believe I may be, you've caught me out," he said with a grin.

Well that was unexpected of him.

"Oh I don't know..." he said, trailing off a little.

Shannon grinned, simultaneously amused and flattered. About time the guy noticed her there.

"I thought maybe," she said softly, the grin softening into a smile. "I don't mind," she added quickly. "You're very cute." And well-off, and successful, from the little bit she'd heard, she thought but didn't add.

When he wasn't sure he wanted to come up, Shannon shrugged again. "No big deal. I'm just gonna practice some more, probably. I can't sleep very much at night...I was used to having to stay awake out of, you know, fear. So my sleep cycle is pretty screwy. You don't have to if you don't want to, just figured I'd offer," she said.

Sam grinned, nodding.

"Cute? So I'm like a puppy or something then? Puppy's are cute."

Sam lost his ability to speak for a moment, looking everywhere but at her. He really did want to continue speaking with her, but it was getting late.

"Perhaps some other time? I'm pretty tired. But why don't you try and get some sleep as well? We can catch up some other time."

Shannon shook her head and smiled. "No, not like a puppy; don't be a smart ass," she teased.

It was adorably amusing, though, that he couldn't look at her when she suggested again that he come up. "That's fine," she agreed. "I'm not going to sleep, though. I'm still gonna practice, but you should get some sleep if you're tired, definitely," she agreed.

With one hand on the doorknob, she looked back at him and gave a fond smile. "G'night Sam," she said softly, pushing the door open and pausing in the doorway for a moment to give him a chance to speak, so that she wouldn't be shutting the door in his face.

"As far as I'm concerned, men can not be called cute. It's not manly enough," he joked.

He hoped he hadn't offended or upset her by turning down the offer, but she did seem genuine, and did seem to want him to be able to rest. When she turned to walk away, he smiled when she turned to face him. Reaching forward, he grabbed her hand, kissing the back of it.

"Goodnight Shannon. Tonight was most enjoyable," he nodded, smiling lightly, before taking a few steps back. He wouldn't leave until she closed the door of course, wanting to check she was alright, but he didn't make it look like he was planning on staying.

"Charming, too," she said, raising her eyebrows and looking impressed as he kissed the back of her hand. Her smile softened. "I'll see you when I see you," she said with a wink.

With that, she let herself into her room when he took a few steps back and she closed the door behind herself, leaning against it for a minute as she considered. Sam was going to be a bit of a hard one to crack, she thought, but maybe it'd be worth trying, in any case. He was charming and sweet...he reminded her, as much as she hated to admit it, of Sayid.

Her smile faded a little and she walked away from the door. It wouldn't do to think about Sayid right now, so she headed back to the practice room, taking off her heels as she went, and took hold of the bar.

"First position. Plie..." she said to herself. Hopefully, she and Sam would get together again sometime. Until then...there was ballet.
