Day Thirty-One
Who: Shannon Rutherford and Sam Tyler
What: You heal my wounds and I'll heal yours...
When: Day 31 after dinner
Where: The bar
Rating: PG-13 for language
Status: Complete

Well, if Sam Tyler wasn't interested in a quick fuck to put their problems aside, Shannon could understand that, she supposed. In fact, she had a lot more respect for him, for it, if she was honest. The fact that he had a girlfriend back wherever he came from wasn't something she could've personally cared less about. She had Sayid, but Sayid wasn't here, so as far as Shannon was concerned, fair game. He had Annie and even though Annie wasn't here, he was committed. Admirable, if not a little annoying.

It seemed to Shannon that she and Sam had a bit in common - the fact that they had no friends here yet and the people they cared about were back home. Well. Maybe home for him; not for her. Home was a term she had learned to use very loosely, lately.

The idea of sitting at the bar with the golem in front of her was about as appealing now as it had been the other night with Greg, so she took her drink and, with a glare in the golem's general direction, she sashayed away and took a seat at one of the tables. She hadn't necessarily done it on purpose, but she'd chosen a different table, this time.

Sipping at her drink, she looked down at her watch - one she'd sorely missed the whole time she'd been on the Island and had asked the Planet to replace. She'd have to take it slow with this drink, considering the fact that all she'd been able to stomach for dinner was a passion fruit and an apple. God, she hoped that would let up soon... Nothing worse than having all she wanted at her fingertips and still not being able to stomach real food.

If Sam didn't show up soon, she'd call it a night; go back to her room, make use of the ballet bar again, and then cozy up on the damn floor because the stupid bed was still too soft compared to the sand to which she'd become accustomed. Hopefully, though, he would. Already, she'd unofficially adopted him as a friend and that was saying an awful lot about the guy, especially since she'd never met him in person. Part of her hoped he wasn't attractive, because if he was, that'd be all the more difficult for her to keep her cool and use him for what she wanted him for: an outlet for her emotions. Someone who sounded as broken as she did was perfect. No one would have to know that she was an emotional wreck except for Sam Tyler and she doubted he'd shout it from the rooftops, because he sounded like he was in pretty much the same boat.

So now, she just had to wait for him to show up. With another sip of her drink she crossed her legs and leaned back against her chair. He had until she finished the drink and she'd bail. Hopefully, he wouldn't disappoint.

"I'm not one to push for sympathy, really. In a job like mine you get use to keeping everything inside, not really ones for letting emotions show."

He listened as she mentioned not being able to figure him out and nodded a little.

"To be honest, not many people can."

Shannon couldn't tell whether or not Sam was just being honest and straight-forward or underhandedly insulting her when he said he wasn't one to push for sympathy. Especially since she was under the impression that the underlying reason for them to have been meeting up was because they were both suffering losses and it was the main thing that the two seemed to have in common.

"Well, no offense but...you're not at work here," Shannon pointed out gently.

She considered his response to her not being able to figure him out and paused, raising an eyebrow. "You sound just like me. You shut people out when they try to understand, huh?" she asked with honest curiosity.

Sam nodded. He knew he wasn't at work anymore, but he found it hard to shut that part of him away. He spent most of his days pushing people away, acting like nothing was bothering him. It helped him cope.

"I suppose so yes."

She was right. He kept himself to himself, refusing to let anyone in. Other than Annie, but he still kept things from her.

"Not to be a hypocrite," Shannon started slowly, "but that's maybe not the best way to do things."

She didn't go on to say that she did it because she preferred to be on her own. The point was that Shannon knew that most people did it because they didn't know how to do anything else or because they were socially awkward (probably this guy's problem, she thought). Some people did it because they thought they weren't worth anyone's time. Part of the reason Shannon did it was for the opposite reason - no one else was worth her time. For Sam Tyler, she could make an exception, though, she thought.

Sam chuckled a little, nodding. He understood that it wasn't the best way, but it didn't mean he acted any differently. He had grown use to keeping things to himself, and he didn't foresee any change in himself.

"I suppose not."

She really was starting to try and make him talk, wasn't she? He smiled a little across at her, unsure of the questions she was going to ask. More than worried that he'd sound insane, after all a lot of people thought he was back in Manchester.
