Open RP, Day 29
WHO: Haruka and OTA
WHAT: Haruka's found the snowmobiles^^
WHEN: Day 29, just after lunch
WHERE: Out in the snow
RATING: PG-13, just to be safe
STATUS: Incomplete.

Haruka had decided that, rather than join in the snowball fight, she'd do a bit of exploring. She hadn't really ventured out in the snow, and curiosity finally got the better of her as to what this place was like at the moment. She left Michiru a note, since the two took no chances after the kidnapping incident, and, dressed in a dark blue snowsuit, struck out toward where the stables had been before. Now, it looked like a little garage of some sort had taken their place.

Haruka pulled open the door to the garage, and a grin spread across her face. "Now, this is more like it," she said aloud. Half a dozen snowmobiles were lined up, gleaming in the sunlight that came in from the open door, just waiting to be played with. She walked over to the first one and noted that the key was already in the ignition. She looked around, and found a shelf of helmets on the wall behind the vehicles. She pulled one off the shelf and slipped it over her head. She'd been itching to drive something since she'd been brought here, and this snowmobile was just the thing. Not that Haruka had ever driven a snowmobile before, but if she could handle a race car and a motorcycle, she was pretty confident that a snowmobile wouldn't be too much trouble.

She pulled the snowmobile out onto the pristine snow outside the garage, then closed the garage door again. No sense in letting any passing snow showers pile snow inside the garage. That wouldn't be fun to clean. She swung her leg over the seat and started the engine, grinning as the vehicle hummed to life. She stared down at the controls, working out what each one was for. Then, she set off, racing across the open expanse of land. It was a lot like a motorcycle, and she let out a yell of pure delight at the feeling of flying across the snow. This was what she missed, the rush of going faster than anything around you. She turned the vehicle with a little effort, and sped off around the perimeter of the resort, screaming her joy for all to hear.

Ahead of her, Haruka spied someone out in the snow. She braked, allowing the snowmobile to slow and slide to a stop just in front of the person. "Isn't this a great day?" she asked, pulling off her helmet and grinning.

"You sound like a friend of mine," Haruka remarked. "She'd always say she's better with the books than with anything else. But she's also a top-notch swimmer. So, there's got to be something related to sports that you're good at too, I figure. Just not skateboarding." She smirked. She'd never really understood the idea of skateboarding. Wasn't fast enough for her liking.

Haruka looked at Luke, a wicked gleam in her eyes. "You know, there are more of these things in the garage across the resort," she said slowly. "Don't suppose you'd want to ride with me?"

"I'm okay at swimming," Luke admitted. He'd learned how to swim by reading it in a book. Learning and putting something into practice and actually doing it were different things, though. That was where Luke had trouble. "I can't think of any sport that I'm good at."

Luke's face lit up. "Really? I'd love to try!" he said enthusiastically. He'd make sure to wear a helmet. Wouldn't want Sarah Jane to worry about him.

Haruka hadn't yet met a boy who wasn't good at some sort of sport. Even the Three Lights had been somewhat athletic. She shook her head at Luke's declaration. "Well, then we'll have to make sure you get good at something while you're here," she said. "Then you can impress all your friends at home when we get off this crazy planet."

She grinned as Luke's eyes lit up. She swung her leg over the seat of the snowmobile and got ready to ride. She turned back to Luke. "Climb on and hold tight, okay? I'll go slowly until we get you back to the garage."

Luke's face split into a grin. "Would you teach me? Clyde will be shocked when I show him I can actually do some kind of sport." He imagined the look on Clyde's face and laughed a little.

Since Haruka already had a helmet, Luke held his hands out and said, "I would like a helmet please." A helmet materialized in his hands and Luke put it on securely, marveling at the way the planet worked once again. He climbed onto the snowmobile and held on to Haruka's waist, wondering if she found it awkward or not. He hoped he wasn't causing her to be so. She had said to hold on. Still, he was excited to be trying out a new thing.

Haruka smirked. "I'm only learning myself today," she said, but she nodded. It hadn't been too difficult to figure out, after all. She could at least show Luke the basics. He'd probably pick up on it quickly, smart kid like him who remembered Juuban from a book. And, from the way he talked, he needed to show his friend up just a bit. Well, driving impressed any fellow teen, and driving something exotic would be doubly impressive.

She was amused that Luke asked for things aloud, the way Michiru did. He was polite, as Michiru was, but his politeness wasn't laced with the bitterness that her lover's was. It was, if Haruka was honest, a little refreshing.

Luke climbed on and Haruka felt his arms wrap around her waist. Not awkward personally, no, just felt a little funny because of all the layers. She couldn't quite feel his arms, so she had trouble gauging his grip. "All set?" she asked. She revved the engine, then started off across the snow again, driving more carefully this time, since she had a passenger. She made a wide turn, steering well clear of the snowman, and headed back toward the garage. She also kept well clear of the snowball fight, afraid that she might ruin it if she distracted people with a snowmobile driving through. Within minutes, she was back at the garage. She brought the snowmobile to a stop and pulled off her helmet. "Find a color you like inside," she told Luke, nodding toward the garage, "and we'll see what they can do."

Luke let out a loud whoop of delight after Haruka took off. This was fun! These snowmobiles didn't seem that hard to handle. Sort of like driving a car, since it had an engine. "Do you have to be a certain age to legally use them?" Luke thought to ask. He didn't want to get into trouble if he wasn't supposed to be using them...

When they pulled up in front of the garate, Luke slipped off and removed his own helmet. "Thank you for letting me ride with you," he said gratefully. It sure beat walking back. Luke ducked inside to check out what other snowmobiles were inside.

Haruka shrugged. "Not sure, actually." She smirked. "I don't think it'll matter here, though. Are you not old enough to drive?" She gave Luke another look as they got off the snowmobile. He didn't look any younger than she did, really. Only in the face, in the eyes. He looked more...innocent...than she did. He hadn't seen the things she had. Hadn't done the things she had.

"Not a problem," Haruka said, grinning at him and shaking off her sudden bout of seriousness. She followed Luke into the garage and let her gaze wander over the machines inside. "If I'd have realized these were here earlier, I'd have been riding every day," she said. "That's the thing I've really missed here, driving. It's been weird not to have the wind in my face like that, not to feel an engine humming around me." She watched Luke as he inspected the snowmobiles. "Which one do you like?" she asked.

Luke shook his head. "I just turned 15. I can't drive anything at all for at least another year." Luke left out the fact that he was actually much younger than that.

Luke's eyes picked out a green and blue colored one that had an interesting pattern, so he walked over to it and rested his hand on the seat. "I'll try out this one. How does it work?"

Haruka smirked. "I was driving at 15," she said. "International license. My father liked my passion for things with motors, so he taught me how to drive." She followed Luke over to the snowmobile. "Let's get it outside, first," she said. She took the machine by the handlebars and steered it outside. The light was better out there. She carefully closed the garage again once Luke had stepped outside.

"It's actually not too difficult," she said. "Steer with the handlebars, sort of like a bicycle, but with a lot more power. Gas is here, brakes are here, and this is the ignition, here." She pointed out various controls over the vehicle. Then, she walked back to her snowmobile and straddled the seat again. "We'll take it slow at first, so you can get the hang of it. Just follow me." She waited until Luke had situated himself and turned the snowmobile on before she accelerated and headed toward the edge of the snow-covered forest. She kept her speed much slower this time, so Luke would be able to keep up.

"Really?" Luke asked, interesting. "What's an international license?" He hadn't heard of that... Maybe he could get one, that is, if Sarah Jane let him.

Luke helped Haruka get the snowmobile outside, then listened to her explanation. He made sure his helmet was on securely, then got on the contraption. Very very carefully at first, he did as Haruka had instructed and made it jerk forward for a moment before he stopped. Slightly more confident, Luke drove it forward very slowly until he got the hang of it, grinning underneath his helmet. He followed Haruka, grateful that she wasn't going too fast.

"It's a license that lets you drive anywhere in the world," Haruka said. "You can get it once you get a driver's license in one country."

She turned back to look at him as they headed across the resort grounds, and grinned when she saw him handling the snowmobile like a natural. He'd been very attentive when she'd explained the workings of the vehicle, and he seemed, like Ami, to understand how things worked easily. "You sure you've never driven before?" she asked, slowing down so he could drive along side her. "You're gonna put me to shame if you keep driving that well."

Luke mentally filed this information away, thinking it might be useful later on. It would be fun to see the world one day and driving in any country he wanted to would be useful.

When she complimented him, Luke grinned underneath his helmet, although he kept his eyes straight ahead. "You really think so? No, I've never used anything like this before. This is fun! I wish we had lots of snow back home... but I'm not sure if my mum would let me have a snowmobile or not. She's here on the planet too."

Haruka nodded, her gaze shifting between Luke and the stretch of snow in front of her. She slowed down farther, so they were riding parallel to each other. Conversing on snowmobiles probably wasn't the safest thing to do, and she didn't want Michiru to scold her later for being too unsafe. "I do. You're a natural on it," she said.

"Your mother's here as well?" Haruka asked. It wasn't the first she'd heard of a parent and child here together - she'd met Corran Horn and his son at the party a few nights earlier - but it still struck her as an odd occurrence. "Did you arrive together? It must be hard to explore with your mother around, worrying about you."

"Thank you!" Luke said enthusiastically. As soon as he got back home, he'd tell Clyde that there might be some form of sport activity that he was actually good at.

"Yes, she's here. No, we didn't arrive together. She was the one who actually encouraged me to go exploring. I believe she trusts me to be careful and safe on my own for a little while."

Haruka laughed. "Better than my mother would be, then!" she said. She banked left, heading around toward the front of the resort area, near to where the beach had been, and then turned around entirely before bringing the snowmobile to a stop. As soon as Luke caught up, she pulled off her helmet for a moment and turned to him. "Want to race back?" she asked, a gleam in her eye.

Luke paused after they stopped. Sarah Jane always told him to be careful... but Luke felt a bit of recklessness coming on, wanting to do something daring. And besides, he was wearing his helmet, he was paying complete attention to where he was driving, making sure that he didn't run into anyone, and he wasn't going at the maximum speed. Haruka was sure to win anyway. "Alright," he agreed, a grin slowly stretching across his face.

Haruka nodded, her grin a mirror of his own. She put her helmet back on securely, and revved the engine on her snowmobile. "Ready?" she called over to Luke. "Three...two...one...go!" With these words, Haruka hit the gas and took off across the snowy fields, back toward the garage. She didn't go top speed - she was still new to the machine, and she didn't want to hit anything accidentally - but she went faster than she'd been going with Luke, about as fast as she'd been going when she started, perhaps. Her grin only widened as she flew across the snow.

Luke let Haruka go in front of him and followed the path she took, trusting that she knew where she was going and that her way wouldn't lead him to crashing into anything. After they'd been going for a few moments, he let out a loud whoop then laughed. This place really wasn't that bad.

Haruka glanced back as she just caught the edge of a shout behind her. It seemed like Luke was enjoying himself. Although, it wasn't much of a race if he was following her. Didn't really matter, in the end. She was just happy to be driving something again, and happy to have found someone to share her love of speed with. She steered around the resort carefully, avoiding the large snowball fight she'd noticed earlier in the day, and, after several minutes, ended up back at the garage. She braked and pulled her snowmobile up to a stop just outside the garage. She pulled her helmet off, grinning. "Not bad, eh?" she asked Luke once he'd pulled up as well.

Luke let himself be momentarily distracted by the snowball fight, thinking it would be fun to join later on, then focused again on driving safely.

Luke started to slow down much more sooner than Haruka had, coasting the last bit of the way until the snowmobile came to a stop. He took of his helmet as well so he could see Haruka better, grinning back. "Not at all!"

Deciding to let the snowmobile rest for the afternoon, Haruka walked over and hauled open the garage doors. "You did very well for your first time riding," she said, glancing back at Luke. His grin was infectious. She returned it full force as she checked over her snowmobile, brushing the skis and front clean of excess snow and walking it into the garage, replacing it carefully in line. "Assuming we have a few more days of snow, we should go out again."

"Thank you," Luke said gratefully, feeling very pleased with himself. He watched as she cleared the snow off and, figuring he should do the same thing, copied what she did and cleaned off his snowmobile too.

"That would be great!" he agreed, putting the machine back where he had found it. "Thank you for showing me how to use it. I had a lot of fun."

"You're very welcome," Haruka said, grinning at Luke as he put his snowmobile away as well. "It was fun to have someone to ride with, for a change. My Michiru isn't one for things like this." Unless there was room for two on the snowmobile, which there really wasn't, Michiru wouldn't go for it. And she'd never be able to ride one of these side-saddle. "It's been a good day, Luke-san. I'll see you around, I hope."
