Who: Luke Smith and Sarah Jane Smith
When: Day 28
What: Luke goes to visit Mum
Rating: PG
Status: Complete

Thanks to Violet's help, Luke had discovered his mother was in the room right next to him. Luke had taken a quick peak in his own first. There'd been a journal left for him to write in that also let him see what other people had written who where at this strange place called Mirage. Luke wanted to understand more about how it work and hoped he could eventually find someone to explain exactly how it did so to him, but later. His room looked exactly like his room back home (yet another thing that Luke wanted to know how it worked) and home reminded him of Sarah Jane, so he ducked back out and over next door. He hoped she would be there as he knocked on the door... He'd keep trying until he found her if she wasn't.

"November...." Sarah Jane turned to look at him carefully. It definitely had not been November when she'd been snatched away. Had he been without her all this time? "When I was brought here, it was summer, just after we fought the Daleks." She gave him an apologetic look. "Luke, I'm so sorry. You must have been so worried." She felt the urge to hug him again, and took a few steps toward him, then stopped, unsure. She offered a smile and a shake of the head instead. "No, it's not the Daleks this time. At least, not that we've been able to tell, and they are quite flashy with their plans."

She had no clue if they were in a different time or not, or how the gap between their arrivals could be so small, and yet so vast at the same time, unless the planet operated out of time, like the TARDIS sometimes did. "I wish I knew where and when this planet was," she admitted. "If anyone can figure that out, though, it's the Doctor. Once he's got the TARDIS back working normally again, he'll be able to tell." She smiled just thinking of the old girl. "Wait till you see, Luke, you'll think it's marvelous."

There was no question in Sarah Jane's mind that she'd be introducing Luke to the Doctor at the earliest opportunity. As soon as the blizzard was safely past, and he and the Captain were back in the residential area. "Of course you can," she said, grinning. "As if I'd be able to keep the two of you apart. And yes, you can meet Captain Harkness as well." Much as she disapproved of their methods, Torchwood had been so helpful in fighting the Daleks. And Captain Harkness was rather nice. A thought struck her as she remembered her encounter with the Doctor the previous evening. "Luke, before you do meet the Doctor, you need to be aware of something. He's not from when you and I last saw him. It's like with you and me. I'm here, now, from a few months earlier than you are. So is the Doctor. He won't remember battling the Daleks and you and K9 helping, because he hasn't done it yet." It made her head hurt to try and completely comprehend this. Time travel had always been a bit difficult to grasp, especially when it involved her own personal time line, but she could understand the basics, and she knew Luke would as well.

"Well," she said, clapping her hands together, "food and drink it is, then. Since you haven't had an after-school snack yet." She wasn't entirely sure about the psychic-Planet idea, but if the Doctor was right, then all she had to do, in theory, was think about what snacks she'd planned for Luke on the day she'd been taken away. What was it? Biscuits, she thought. From the shops, but definitely biscuits. Plain ones, or perhaps some with chocolate chips. And a glass of milk. After the incident at Bubble Shock, the idea of pop didn't really appeal to her.

She grinned as Luke mentioned his room. "I'm starting to think the Doctor's right about this being a psychic planet," she said. She reached out to wrap an arm around Luke. "Because that's exactly where I'd want you. Can you stand being so close to your mum?" she asked jokingly.

Luke blinked on confusion. "You've been here since the summer? But that's impossible. You've been back home. I saw you this morning." Luke's eyebrows furrowed together as he thought. "Mr. Smith never detected anything different and I couldn't tell something was either. You're my mum. I know you. I'm sure it was you," Luke insisted. "It couldn't have been a shapeshifter or something like that."

Luke felt excitement at the prospect of getting to meet the Doctor and see the TARDIS. Sarah Jane had told him so much about the Time Lord and his ship already.

He listened as Sarah Jane explained about the Doctor, a thought occurring to him. "Maybe when we go back home, we go back to whenever we were taken from with no memory of here. Maybe it's like an experiment of some sort. That would explain why the Doctor doesn't remember and why you haven't been gone at all," he theorized. He wondered if the Doctor would agree with him. "But I won't mention the Daleks to him if you don't want me to. Does he know about me at all? Does the Doctor think the planet is actually psychic? Mr. Smith's never said anything about a planet being able to be psychic before." Another thing occurred to Luke. "Maybe the Doctor can give me some lessons on things like Mr. Smith does." He looked at Sarah Jane hopefully, wondering what she would think.

When Sarah Jane wrapped her arm around him, he grinned. "Just as long as I get my own room," he said back, feeling much more at ease. "If you're from the summer, should I tell you what's happened in the time you've been gone, even though you haven't really been gone at all? Would that mess things up?" He wanted to tell her that he now had a birthday and about Rani too.

Now Sarah Jane frowned. "No, I've been here all of one day. It was summer yesterday when I stepped outside...." She listened to Luke carefully, trying to suss out what exactly had been going on. Something tugged at the corners of her memory, a weird feeling of deja vu, but she couldn't make it take hold. All she knew was that she couldn't be in two places at once.

"That...makes sense," she said as Luke offered up his hypothesis. It felt familiar to her, but she had no idea why. It would do as an explanation for now, at least. She was confident that the Doctor could tell them if it was viable. She grinned as Luke began asking questions about the Doctor. "I've mentioned you," she said, "but not really gone into much detail. I haven't had the chance yet. And no, I wouldn't mention the Daleks, just to be on the safe side. If your theory is right, then it might be safe to bring up, but not until we know for sure. We don't want to muck up the time stream."

She was reminded again of the alternate 1980 and Sutekh, and suppressed a shudder. She spied the food and drink on her desk and steered Luke toward it. "He does seem to think that the planet's psychic. And if he thinks it's possible, then I'm sure it is." She picked up the plate and offered him a biscuit. "And, to be fair, we've never thought to ask Mr. Smith about a psychic planet. When we get home, if we remember, we'll have to do just that."

"Lessons?" Sarah Jane thought for a moment. She grinned. Nothing seemed to please the Doctor more than when he could explain something technical to an interested party. Teaching Luke a few things about the TARDIS or whatnot might be just the thing for him. "I think he might be amenable to giving you some lessons," she said. "I don't see the harm in asking, at any rate. Just don't go off galavanting round the universe without telling me, okay?" She winked at Luke.

When he asked about filling her in on the missing time, Sarah Jane's expression turned serious. Part of her did really want to know, just to make sure that everything really had been okay at home while she had been gone. If she had been gone. It seemed harmless, on the surface, for him to tell her what had happened. But, you never knew. "As much as I'd love to hear what you've been doing in my not-quite absence," Sarah Jane said at last, "I think we'd best wait until we know how this all works. If we figure out that your theory is right, then you can tell me, because it won't make a bit of difference in the end, and I can enjoy the news here. If not, you don't want to run the risk of changing the time stream."

Luke nodded as he listened to Sarah Jane. "Alright. I promise I won't mention anything that hasn't happened yet, for the Doctor or for you. Do you remember the exact day it was when you were brought here?" It was times like this he was glad he had an eidetic memory. Once Sarah Jane told him the date, it would be easy to split the time between what she did know and didn't.

"I hope we remember this place. I've already seen lots of things that I've never seen or heard about back home, even from Mr. Smith." He couldn't help but let excitement leak into his tone as he reached out and took one of the offered biscuits. "Thank you," he said politely. "And I promise I won't go anywhere without telling you first." Luke remembered how frantic Clyde's mother had been when he'd gone off with his father. He didn't want to make Sarah Jane worry about him like that.

Sarah Jane nodded. "Thank you, Luke. Let me see, it was...." She trailed off, thinking back to the day before. "It was Thursday, the Thursday after we beat the Daleks." She couldn't remember the exact date. "You were due to start summer holidays in another week's time." She smiled at him. "I suppose you could tell me whether you passed your exams," she said cheekily. "And if we get to remember what's happened here, I'll keep it to myself."

She couldn't help but grin hearing the enthusiasm in Luke's voice. "Did you have a journal outside your door when you arrived?" she asked him. She held up her plain leather one to demonstrate. "Sort of like this? There was one waiting for me. Perhaps you could write down all the things you've seen, and if you keep the journal with you all the time, when we do get to go home, you'll have it as a reference."

Come to think of it, that wasn't a bad idea. She'd have to start jotting down her observations as well. Violet had done so, to great effect, since she'd been able to show Sarah Jane what she'd discovered about the place. Then, at least, they wouldn't overlook anything that might be important.

"I appreciate that," Sarah Jane said. She was pleased that her son was so responsible. "If I'm not in when you decide to run off exploring, just slip a note under my door, or if you've got a journal, jot a note to me there. These things are quite marvelous. You can read notes from anyone else whose got one. And no, I don't know how they work," she said, anticipating Luke's question. "Although I imagine they're a bit like the Doctor's psychic paper."

Luke tried not to frown. That meant that Sarah Jane didn't know that Maria had moved away. She hadn't met Rani either. He'd have to be careful never to mention her. When she mentioned his exams, though, he grinned. "I pass them," he said honestly. "Perfect scores."

He nodded when she showed him her journal. "The one I have looks like that too. Are they all the same?" He made a mental note to do what she suggested. It was odd, thinking about not being able to remember something when he was always able to remember everything.

"I will," Luke replied sincerely to Sarah Jane requesting he always leave a note should he wander off. "If they're like the Doctor's psychic paper, maybe he would understand how they do..." Luke trailed off curiously. He wanted to learn how everything worked here because it was something he didn't know and he always got excited when he learned something new.

Sarah Jane grinned at Luke's results. She was pretty sure that was how it would end up, but it was nice to know for certain. "Marvelous," she said. She wrapped an arm around his shoulders to pull him in for another quick hug. "I never doubted it."

When he asked about the journals, Sarah Jane nodded. "They're all the same in that they talk to each other. The covers are unique, from what I can tell. One of the others asked a question about them and their appearance earlier."

Sarah resisted the urge to laugh as Luke drifted off into his own thoughts. It amazed her how involved he could get, once he'd set his mind to a problem. Much like the Doctor, she mused. "If anyone would, it's him," she said.

Luke was pleased that Sarah Jane seemed to be proud of him about his exams. He liked making her happy. He knew that not all kids got along with their parents but he was very grateful to Sarah Jane for all that she had done for him so he tried very hard not to get her upset about anything that he was the cause of.

"I'll have to ask him about it later," Luke said, making another mental note to talk to the Doctor eventually. "So... what do we do now?" he trailed off, unsure of what they would do now that they were here. Surely they wouldn't be here for long. He didn't like missing school but he knew it would be easy for him to catch up.

"Oh!" he exclaimed, remembering he wanted to tell Sarah Jane about his birthday. "Is it alright if I tell you something that happens in the future that doesn't massively affect the timeline?" Luke was pretty sure picking out a birthday wouldn't mess anything up as long as he didn't tell her the reason why he had chosen that particular day...

What did they do now? Sarah Jane had wondered that herself in the last day. She was used to being busy. Here, there wasn't anything required, it seemed. You just existed. That sort of living would stagnate the mind, if taken too far. "We learn absolutely everything we can about this place," she said, "and about the types of people who were brought here. There must be a reason, after all. And we also do not panic."

She looked out the window at the snow. "And, perhaps," she said, smiling slightly, "we take a little holiday here and there. Make the most of this enforced idleness and relax just a bit. Not necessarily let our guard down, but there's no harm in allowing ourselves just a bit of holiday." It wasn't like Sarah, or Luke for that matter, would be content to idle away time. They'd get bored too easily and be back at the problem at hand.

Sarah Jane was about to reiterate that sharing information was probably not a good idea, except that Luke looked so eager to share the news. And she had asked about his marks on his exams.... "All right, just the one thing," she said. "But you never know what might or might not affect the timeline, so mind in future what you say to whom." Advice she'd do well to remember herself. "So, what's the news?"

"I'm not worried," Luke said when Sarah Jane said they shouldn't panic. "Well. Maybe a little," he admitted. "I wish Clyde and Maria and - " Luke caught himself before he gave away Rani's name. "And our other friends were here, though," he finished.

Relax. Luke found that hard to do when he was bustling with questions, wanting to do exactly as Sarah Jane had suggested and find out everything he could about this new and strange place. It almost felt like he'd just been activated again and there was so much to learn and take it.

"I have a birthday now!" he said excitedly. "I picked it out on my own, so it's mine. I won't tell you why. I'm officially 15 now." Luke said it proudly. He knew he was different and that that was a good thing but he also felt good that he was at least a little bit like everyone else and not too different.

Sarah Jane smiled at Luke. "It's all right to be worried," she told him, "as long as you don't let it overwhelm you. I'm worried too, quite honestly. This whole situation is troublesome. We've just got to make the best of it until we find our way home." She didn't blame him for wanting to see Maria and Clyde again. She knew Luke felt awkward making new friends, but really, he needn't worry about that. But it was difficult not having the people you were used to around to bounce ideas off of, or to come up with their usual brilliant insight. "At least we've got each other here," she said, "which is better than being on our own, right?" She clapped him lightly on the upper arms.

At his news, Sarah Jane beamed. "You do! Luke, that's wonderful! Congratulations!" She reached out to embrace him again. "I'm sorry I missed it," she said. "Or, rather, that it hasn't happened for me yet. Fifteen!" She stepped back to hold him at arms length and gave him a once-over. "Well, you do look a bit more mature, I must say," Sarah Jane said, her tone serious. "Perhaps a bit taller as well." She grinned again, pleased that he'd gone and done something so normal as have a birthday. "Which day did you choose? Can you at least tell me that, if you can't tell me the reason? And we did throw you a proper party, didn't we?" She was sure that Maria would have seen to that, but it would make her feel better for having missed it if she knew for certain.

Luke nodded in understanding. They'd get home eventually, if the Doctor was here. He had a time machine, didn't he? And he was smart too. Working together, Luke was sure they'd be able to get back home. He grinned when Sarah Jane mentioned that at least they weren't alone. He nodded again, giving her a quick hug. "You're right. I'm glad you're here, Mum," he said honestly.

"I do? Really?" Luke asked happily when Sarah Jane said he looked more mature and taller. He really was a genetically correct human. Not alien at all. "October 18th, 1994. Yes, I had a big party. It was really fun. I got presents! And we had cake and ice cream too."

"You most certainly do," Sarah Jane insisted, nodding for emphasis. He'd end up taller than her, which, granted wouldn't be a difficult thing. He did seem to be catching her height rather quickly. Gracious, he'd be shaving before long. That would be interesting. She supposed Clive would have to teach him that, since she had no experience with that sort of thing.

"October 18, 1994," she repeated, memorizing the date. She did wonder what made him choose it, but he probably had a good reason for not explaining it. She smiled as he described his party. "That's marvelous," she said. "I'm glad you had so much fun." She felt a flash of annoyance at the circumstances, since to her point of view, she'd missed it, but perhaps when the Doctor figured out how to get them all home, he could put them all back when they'd been taken, and she wouldn't end up missing it at all.

"Well, then," Sarah Jane said, looking down at Luke, "what are your plans for the day here, hmm? Because I doubt they include spending the entire day with your mum, as much as I'd like them to." Luke's curiosity was no doubt as energized as ever it was, and there was only so much she could do to satisfy it, given what little she knew about the place.

Sarah Jane shook her head. "I've only been here a little over a day myself, so I'm not exactly sure, but it seems like there's loads to do. Did you see the map of the resort? It's enormous." She grinned at him. "And as far as I can tell, it's safe. Well, as safe as anything can be when we've been dropped here against our will. Nothing seems like it's deliberately out to harm us."

She walked over and looked out the window at the snow. "Just make sure if you go out, you dress warmly. It's colder out there than it gets in Ealing in the wintertime. And..." She trailed off and turned back to Luke. "You've never seen snow, have you?" she asked him.

Luke almost thought it was odd how Sarah Jane could only have gotten here a day before him when so much time had passed between where they had come from but that was time travel for you, he realized. He shook his head when she mentioned a map.

He grinned when she said to dress warmly. "I'll probably need a thicker coat," he mused, taking a glace out the window. "I arrived outside. It was very cold. Now I've seen snow," he added, still smiling. "Do you want to go exploring?" Luke wasn't sure if she had anything planned but he figured he'd ask first to be polite. He'd go check out the interior of this place more thoroughly alone if she didn't want to, although he would be glad for the company.

Sarah Jane nodded in agreement Luke's assessment of his coat. "Of course you will," she said. "I'm sure that this psychic planet can give you just the thing." She'd found a warmer coat in her closet this morning, when she'd thought about taking a walk outside. More credence to the Doctor's theory.

Sarah Jane though carefully when Luke asked about going exploring. Part of her really wanted to, the insatiable journalist part of her that wanted to learn everything she could about the place all at once. The more practical side, however, protested the cold that she wasn't used to and the aches it produced in her joints. She didn't want to disappoint her son, but she wasn't quite sure she was up for a day of scrambling about. "You go on," she said, smiling at Luke. "You're far more likely to find out interesting things without your mum trailing along after you, at least for today. After all, you and Violet can't be the only teenagers here."

"Alright. When I come back, I'll tell you everything I've found out!" With that, he gave her a quick hug and a grin, then went back to his own room. Sure enough, there was a warm winter coat waiting for him. Putting it on, Luke set out to do some exploring.
