Who: Luke Smith and Sarah Jane Smith
When: Day 28
What: Luke goes to visit Mum
Rating: PG
Status: Complete

Thanks to Violet's help, Luke had discovered his mother was in the room right next to him. Luke had taken a quick peak in his own first. There'd been a journal left for him to write in that also let him see what other people had written who where at this strange place called Mirage. Luke wanted to understand more about how it work and hoped he could eventually find someone to explain exactly how it did so to him, but later. His room looked exactly like his room back home (yet another thing that Luke wanted to know how it worked) and home reminded him of Sarah Jane, so he ducked back out and over next door. He hoped she would be there as he knocked on the door... He'd keep trying until he found her if she wasn't.

Luke tried not to frown. That meant that Sarah Jane didn't know that Maria had moved away. She hadn't met Rani either. He'd have to be careful never to mention her. When she mentioned his exams, though, he grinned. "I pass them," he said honestly. "Perfect scores."

He nodded when she showed him her journal. "The one I have looks like that too. Are they all the same?" He made a mental note to do what she suggested. It was odd, thinking about not being able to remember something when he was always able to remember everything.

"I will," Luke replied sincerely to Sarah Jane requesting he always leave a note should he wander off. "If they're like the Doctor's psychic paper, maybe he would understand how they do..." Luke trailed off curiously. He wanted to learn how everything worked here because it was something he didn't know and he always got excited when he learned something new.

Sarah Jane grinned at Luke's results. She was pretty sure that was how it would end up, but it was nice to know for certain. "Marvelous," she said. She wrapped an arm around his shoulders to pull him in for another quick hug. "I never doubted it."

When he asked about the journals, Sarah Jane nodded. "They're all the same in that they talk to each other. The covers are unique, from what I can tell. One of the others asked a question about them and their appearance earlier."

Sarah resisted the urge to laugh as Luke drifted off into his own thoughts. It amazed her how involved he could get, once he'd set his mind to a problem. Much like the Doctor, she mused. "If anyone would, it's him," she said.

Luke was pleased that Sarah Jane seemed to be proud of him about his exams. He liked making her happy. He knew that not all kids got along with their parents but he was very grateful to Sarah Jane for all that she had done for him so he tried very hard not to get her upset about anything that he was the cause of.

"I'll have to ask him about it later," Luke said, making another mental note to talk to the Doctor eventually. "So... what do we do now?" he trailed off, unsure of what they would do now that they were here. Surely they wouldn't be here for long. He didn't like missing school but he knew it would be easy for him to catch up.

"Oh!" he exclaimed, remembering he wanted to tell Sarah Jane about his birthday. "Is it alright if I tell you something that happens in the future that doesn't massively affect the timeline?" Luke was pretty sure picking out a birthday wouldn't mess anything up as long as he didn't tell her the reason why he had chosen that particular day...

What did they do now? Sarah Jane had wondered that herself in the last day. She was used to being busy. Here, there wasn't anything required, it seemed. You just existed. That sort of living would stagnate the mind, if taken too far. "We learn absolutely everything we can about this place," she said, "and about the types of people who were brought here. There must be a reason, after all. And we also do not panic."

She looked out the window at the snow. "And, perhaps," she said, smiling slightly, "we take a little holiday here and there. Make the most of this enforced idleness and relax just a bit. Not necessarily let our guard down, but there's no harm in allowing ourselves just a bit of holiday." It wasn't like Sarah, or Luke for that matter, would be content to idle away time. They'd get bored too easily and be back at the problem at hand.

Sarah Jane was about to reiterate that sharing information was probably not a good idea, except that Luke looked so eager to share the news. And she had asked about his marks on his exams.... "All right, just the one thing," she said. "But you never know what might or might not affect the timeline, so mind in future what you say to whom." Advice she'd do well to remember herself. "So, what's the news?"

"I'm not worried," Luke said when Sarah Jane said they shouldn't panic. "Well. Maybe a little," he admitted. "I wish Clyde and Maria and - " Luke caught himself before he gave away Rani's name. "And our other friends were here, though," he finished.

Relax. Luke found that hard to do when he was bustling with questions, wanting to do exactly as Sarah Jane had suggested and find out everything he could about this new and strange place. It almost felt like he'd just been activated again and there was so much to learn and take it.

"I have a birthday now!" he said excitedly. "I picked it out on my own, so it's mine. I won't tell you why. I'm officially 15 now." Luke said it proudly. He knew he was different and that that was a good thing but he also felt good that he was at least a little bit like everyone else and not too different.

Sarah Jane smiled at Luke. "It's all right to be worried," she told him, "as long as you don't let it overwhelm you. I'm worried too, quite honestly. This whole situation is troublesome. We've just got to make the best of it until we find our way home." She didn't blame him for wanting to see Maria and Clyde again. She knew Luke felt awkward making new friends, but really, he needn't worry about that. But it was difficult not having the people you were used to around to bounce ideas off of, or to come up with their usual brilliant insight. "At least we've got each other here," she said, "which is better than being on our own, right?" She clapped him lightly on the upper arms.

At his news, Sarah Jane beamed. "You do! Luke, that's wonderful! Congratulations!" She reached out to embrace him again. "I'm sorry I missed it," she said. "Or, rather, that it hasn't happened for me yet. Fifteen!" She stepped back to hold him at arms length and gave him a once-over. "Well, you do look a bit more mature, I must say," Sarah Jane said, her tone serious. "Perhaps a bit taller as well." She grinned again, pleased that he'd gone and done something so normal as have a birthday. "Which day did you choose? Can you at least tell me that, if you can't tell me the reason? And we did throw you a proper party, didn't we?" She was sure that Maria would have seen to that, but it would make her feel better for having missed it if she knew for certain.

Luke nodded in understanding. They'd get home eventually, if the Doctor was here. He had a time machine, didn't he? And he was smart too. Working together, Luke was sure they'd be able to get back home. He grinned when Sarah Jane mentioned that at least they weren't alone. He nodded again, giving her a quick hug. "You're right. I'm glad you're here, Mum," he said honestly.

"I do? Really?" Luke asked happily when Sarah Jane said he looked more mature and taller. He really was a genetically correct human. Not alien at all. "October 18th, 1994. Yes, I had a big party. It was really fun. I got presents! And we had cake and ice cream too."

"You most certainly do," Sarah Jane insisted, nodding for emphasis. He'd end up taller than her, which, granted wouldn't be a difficult thing. He did seem to be catching her height rather quickly. Gracious, he'd be shaving before long. That would be interesting. She supposed Clive would have to teach him that, since she had no experience with that sort of thing.

"October 18, 1994," she repeated, memorizing the date. She did wonder what made him choose it, but he probably had a good reason for not explaining it. She smiled as he described his party. "That's marvelous," she said. "I'm glad you had so much fun." She felt a flash of annoyance at the circumstances, since to her point of view, she'd missed it, but perhaps when the Doctor figured out how to get them all home, he could put them all back when they'd been taken, and she wouldn't end up missing it at all.

"Well, then," Sarah Jane said, looking down at Luke, "what are your plans for the day here, hmm? Because I doubt they include spending the entire day with your mum, as much as I'd like them to." Luke's curiosity was no doubt as energized as ever it was, and there was only so much she could do to satisfy it, given what little she knew about the place.

"I don't know," Luke said honestly when Sarah Jane asked what his plans were. "I just got here a less than an hour ago. What is there to do? What's this place like?"

Sarah Jane shook her head. "I've only been here a little over a day myself, so I'm not exactly sure, but it seems like there's loads to do. Did you see the map of the resort? It's enormous." She grinned at him. "And as far as I can tell, it's safe. Well, as safe as anything can be when we've been dropped here against our will. Nothing seems like it's deliberately out to harm us."

She walked over and looked out the window at the snow. "Just make sure if you go out, you dress warmly. It's colder out there than it gets in Ealing in the wintertime. And..." She trailed off and turned back to Luke. "You've never seen snow, have you?" she asked him.

Luke almost thought it was odd how Sarah Jane could only have gotten here a day before him when so much time had passed between where they had come from but that was time travel for you, he realized. He shook his head when she mentioned a map.

He grinned when she said to dress warmly. "I'll probably need a thicker coat," he mused, taking a glace out the window. "I arrived outside. It was very cold. Now I've seen snow," he added, still smiling. "Do you want to go exploring?" Luke wasn't sure if she had anything planned but he figured he'd ask first to be polite. He'd go check out the interior of this place more thoroughly alone if she didn't want to, although he would be glad for the company.

Sarah Jane nodded in agreement Luke's assessment of his coat. "Of course you will," she said. "I'm sure that this psychic planet can give you just the thing." She'd found a warmer coat in her closet this morning, when she'd thought about taking a walk outside. More credence to the Doctor's theory.

Sarah Jane though carefully when Luke asked about going exploring. Part of her really wanted to, the insatiable journalist part of her that wanted to learn everything she could about the place all at once. The more practical side, however, protested the cold that she wasn't used to and the aches it produced in her joints. She didn't want to disappoint her son, but she wasn't quite sure she was up for a day of scrambling about. "You go on," she said, smiling at Luke. "You're far more likely to find out interesting things without your mum trailing along after you, at least for today. After all, you and Violet can't be the only teenagers here."

"Alright. When I come back, I'll tell you everything I've found out!" With that, he gave her a quick hug and a grin, then went back to his own room. Sure enough, there was a warm winter coat waiting for him. Putting it on, Luke set out to do some exploring.
