Day 14
Who: Ayla & John
What: Go-Carting!
When: Morning
Where: Cafe- then Go-Carts
Rating: PG, if that
Status: Incomplete

It was another glorious morning outside. Sunlight streamed through what could be classified as a window in the wall of her cave-like room. She was happy when she woke up. She prepared the tea she always made for herself and a different brew for Yvaine. The past several days she'd taken the tea to her so that her leg would heal faster.

But after showering, dressing and heading to Yvaine's room, she found that the star woman's leg was by some miracle completely healed. She examined the leg herself and was astonished. Yvaine explained about Tonks and the magical ability to heal instantly and Ayla wished that she had a similar power.

Leaving Yvaine, she headed down to the cafe for some breakfast. She settled herself in a booth and a golem made of clay walked over to take her order. She ordered some poached eggs, a ham steak and a nutty bread toast with gooseberry jam. She waited patiently for it to arrive, sipping some cold milk and looking around at the other patrons of the restaurant. When it arrived, she smiled and thanked the golem who promptly turned and left her to her breakfast.

She buttered and jellied her toast, taking a bite out of it. She was still astonished at the idea that she didn't have to go find all this food herself. That it was already prepared was even more strange. She was used to having the hunters provide the meat for her, but she always had to prepare it. And she had to gather grains and roots to supplement their meat supply. For it all to be laid out in front of her with no work on her part other than requesting it, was altogether unnatural.

She hummed slightly under her breath as she ate, still watching the other customers in the cafe under the cover of lowered brows. She had been reprimanded many times by Creb not to stare. But staring in the Clan equaled eavesdropping. She was just observing, but she still didn't want to be caught in case these people also thought it was rude. She lifted her gaze to the door when she saw it open from the corner of her eye.

She recognized the broad, dark-haired man and, after swallowing the mouthful of food, she smiled and lifted a hand to wave.

The sun overhead played through Ayla’s hair giving it the appearance of spun gold…she never looked more like an angel…and John was mesmerized. He wondered if her beauty was truly appreciated by the men of her own time or if the just pulled her around by that lovely hair…he grinned at himself for thinking such a silly thing.

John drank a small sip of the wine and then almost spit it out, “Toast? Oh, no…no, baby, we don’t have any toast to eat”, he soothed, thinking Ayla must just be the most adorable woman ever, “…ummm…this kind of toast means to honor someone or bless someone with words. So, I blessed and honored us…you and me…Ayla and John!”, he plinked his glass against hers again and chuckled.

He watched her bite into the chicken leg and wondered at how she even looked beautiful doing that…then shook it off and selected a breast and took a bite himself. “Mmmmm…This is good, isn’t it?”, he exclaimed with a cheek full of white meat. Several easy minutes were spent in silence as they ate. John polished off one chicken breast and then an ear of corn and then another chicken breast, noting there were four in the basket.

When asked if he missed his home, the former astronaut wiped his mouth and hands and rested his arms on his knees, “Well, you know, Ayla, I’ve lost my home twice now. When I first went into space in my ship, I got taken away from my first home, Earth, and I missed it very much. Then, knowing I couldn’t go back, I made a new life in the place I was taken to and I was happy there and then I was taken away…and at first I missed it really bad…”, he looked down at the ground, “…still do at night sometimes”. After a pause, John looked up and smiled at the lovely cave woman, “Now, I am beginning to be happy here. I know this is going to be my new home and there are people here I like…”, he reached out and tapped her nose with his forefinger, “…and some people I like a LOT”. He reached in and pulled out some individually wrapped slices of apple pie, “Now, for dessert! I just wish I had some vanilla ice cream to give you, Princess!”. He handed her a slice and then got himself one and took a big bite, “Mmmm Mmmmm, Mama Planet’s deep dish apple pie! That’s good eatin’!”.

Ayla smiled as he explained the toast. "Oh." She laughed softly at her own misunderstanding. She plinked her glass with his when he did it for a second time. She ate with relish, finishing their meal before he brought out the slices of individually wrapped apple pie. She listened quietly while he answered her question.

She nodded. "I have also lost my home twice. First, when the Clan made me leave, and second when I was brought here from the Valley of Horses. I was very sad when I had to leave the Clan and Durc, but then I had Whinney and Baby in the Valley to keep me company and then Jondalar came. I wasn't so lonely then. But then I was brought here. There is so much different here. I like the people, too. I really like you, John." She smiled at him and laughed softly when he touched her nose.

She unwrapped her pie and began to eat it with her fingers, breaking off pieces and putting them in her mouth. She was pleasantly delighted with the dessert. It was a different way to eat apples, but it was delicious. She looked up and giggled at a little crumb clinging to John's lip. She pointed to it, but when he didn't seem to get it, she reached forward and moved the crumb from his lip into his mouth with her finger.
