Day 14
Who: Ayla & John
What: Go-Carting!
When: Morning
Where: Cafe- then Go-Carts
Rating: PG, if that
Status: Incomplete

It was another glorious morning outside. Sunlight streamed through what could be classified as a window in the wall of her cave-like room. She was happy when she woke up. She prepared the tea she always made for herself and a different brew for Yvaine. The past several days she'd taken the tea to her so that her leg would heal faster.

But after showering, dressing and heading to Yvaine's room, she found that the star woman's leg was by some miracle completely healed. She examined the leg herself and was astonished. Yvaine explained about Tonks and the magical ability to heal instantly and Ayla wished that she had a similar power.

Leaving Yvaine, she headed down to the cafe for some breakfast. She settled herself in a booth and a golem made of clay walked over to take her order. She ordered some poached eggs, a ham steak and a nutty bread toast with gooseberry jam. She waited patiently for it to arrive, sipping some cold milk and looking around at the other patrons of the restaurant. When it arrived, she smiled and thanked the golem who promptly turned and left her to her breakfast.

She buttered and jellied her toast, taking a bite out of it. She was still astonished at the idea that she didn't have to go find all this food herself. That it was already prepared was even more strange. She was used to having the hunters provide the meat for her, but she always had to prepare it. And she had to gather grains and roots to supplement their meat supply. For it all to be laid out in front of her with no work on her part other than requesting it, was altogether unnatural.

She hummed slightly under her breath as she ate, still watching the other customers in the cafe under the cover of lowered brows. She had been reprimanded many times by Creb not to stare. But staring in the Clan equaled eavesdropping. She was just observing, but she still didn't want to be caught in case these people also thought it was rude. She lifted her gaze to the door when she saw it open from the corner of her eye.

She recognized the broad, dark-haired man and, after swallowing the mouthful of food, she smiled and lifted a hand to wave.

John grinned, “I sure will, Princess, but let’s get you out into the middle of that empty space, just to be safe”, he winked, “Hold on, honey”. He pushed his foot down on the pedal and turned the wheel so they spun in a circle before they headed out towards the great expanse, “WooooooHooooo!”, he yelled, as a wake of dust and dirt flew out behind them. At this point, they were going about 80 miles per hour. When they came to a stop, he was tempted to slam on the breaks and wildly fishtail it, but he thought about what he should be teaching Ayla…so he slowly de-accelerated until they came to a stop and he put it in park and jumped out to hurry around to Ayla’s side.

With a big smile, John bent to help unbuckle Ayla and then took her hand to help her out of the idling go-cart, “Come on around here, darlin’, you’re gonna love this!”, he promised , as he escorted her to the driver’s side. Once there, the former astronaut eased her down into the driver’s seat and buckled her in. “Okay Princess, it’s easy...this wheel here steers the go-cart, you turn it the way you want to go…when you turn this wheel, it turns those wheels…”, he pointed to the front wheels of the go-cart. “Now, you don’t use this foot here at all, okay? Just rest it over to the side. With your other foot, you push that pedal to make the go-cart move…the harder you push it, the faster it goes. If you ease off, it will slow down…if you need to slow down faster, you tap the break…that’s this pedal. This pedal is for stopping. Always start easing on the break way before you want to stop…don’t step on it hard when you are going fast…unless you are going to hit something…but…I’ll be with you…redy to go?”

John ran around and jumped in the passenger seat and buckled up. “Houston, she’s ready for lift off! Let’s go, baby!”, he encouraged with a big grin and his fist in the air.

Ayla's eyes widened as their speed increased and she clutched the sides of her seat for support. The land was flying by at a rate she was unaccustomed to, but it was wonderful! She had a huge grin plastered to her face, her hair whipping back and behind her to tangle in the wind. She laughed at his obvious delight with how fast they were going and sucked in a breath when they finally came to a stop in the middle of the open field.

As John helped her out of the seat, she stood and felt herself come flush against his body in the moment between stepping out of the car and standing on solid ground. He held her hand and took her around to the driver's side, but she was having a difficult time concentrating on what he was saying to her. And that was totally unlike her. She was always very attentive and paid very close attention to instructions. And honestly, one corner of her active brain was paying attention, but the close proximity of the man had her stomach doing somersaults.

She nodded her blond head, looking down at the petals he was talking about and settling both hands on the wheel. It felt foreign and strange under her touch. Nothing like riding an animal. But she did have some sense of how to control the machine because she had similar unconscious commands she used with Whinney. She laughed at John's enthusiasm, and waited for him to get inside the buggy before she took the vehicle out of park and slowly eased on the gas. She tested out the brake and stopped a little too hard, giving them both a gentle taste of whiplash.

She eased on the gas again and then the brake, a little easier this time and slowly became used to it. She glanced over at John, her blue eyes shining with excitement. "This is fun!" In fact, she couldn't remember when she'd had more fun. Gradually, she began to experiment with the speed, and realized that if she took her foot off the gas pedal that the car would slow on its own and she didn't need to use the brake so much.

Soon, they were whipping around the field at speeds between 20mph and 45mph. She wasn't so sure about going as fast as John had just before she'd been moved to the driver's seat. But finally, she came to a halt and put it in park as she'd seen John do before and looked over at him. "Thank you so much. It was kind of you to bring me out here and show me how to drive." She was being entirely sincere and honest. She wasn't one to beat around the bush or hold anything back.
