Day 14
Who: Ayla & John
What: Go-Carting!
When: Morning
Where: Cafe- then Go-Carts
Rating: PG, if that
Status: Incomplete

It was another glorious morning outside. Sunlight streamed through what could be classified as a window in the wall of her cave-like room. She was happy when she woke up. She prepared the tea she always made for herself and a different brew for Yvaine. The past several days she'd taken the tea to her so that her leg would heal faster.

But after showering, dressing and heading to Yvaine's room, she found that the star woman's leg was by some miracle completely healed. She examined the leg herself and was astonished. Yvaine explained about Tonks and the magical ability to heal instantly and Ayla wished that she had a similar power.

Leaving Yvaine, she headed down to the cafe for some breakfast. She settled herself in a booth and a golem made of clay walked over to take her order. She ordered some poached eggs, a ham steak and a nutty bread toast with gooseberry jam. She waited patiently for it to arrive, sipping some cold milk and looking around at the other patrons of the restaurant. When it arrived, she smiled and thanked the golem who promptly turned and left her to her breakfast.

She buttered and jellied her toast, taking a bite out of it. She was still astonished at the idea that she didn't have to go find all this food herself. That it was already prepared was even more strange. She was used to having the hunters provide the meat for her, but she always had to prepare it. And she had to gather grains and roots to supplement their meat supply. For it all to be laid out in front of her with no work on her part other than requesting it, was altogether unnatural.

She hummed slightly under her breath as she ate, still watching the other customers in the cafe under the cover of lowered brows. She had been reprimanded many times by Creb not to stare. But staring in the Clan equaled eavesdropping. She was just observing, but she still didn't want to be caught in case these people also thought it was rude. She lifted her gaze to the door when she saw it open from the corner of her eye.

She recognized the broad, dark-haired man and, after swallowing the mouthful of food, she smiled and lifted a hand to wave.

When his food came, John set in to eating right away…he was starving and being around this incredibly beautiful young woman seemed to not only make him feel like he was about to crawl out of his skin…it increased his appetite too. It wasn’t long before John was holding his mug of black coffee up for a refill and looking into Ayla’s blue eyes.

He smiled when Ayla mentioned this woman, Yvaine. “She’s a star? Ohhh, a star? Maybe she’s an actress, Ayla…like in movies. Have you been to the Entertainment center to see the motion pictures yet? They call the people who act in those pictures ‘stars’. I think maybe that’s what your friend, Yvaine, meant. I traveled in a ship up among the stars in the sky”, he reached across and touched her hand, “I wish I could show you”. Removing his hand before Ayla became too uncomfortable, John took a long drink of the steaming coffee and studied her as if he were making a decision.

Ayla was more than just a very pretty woman; she was so…fresh, so innocent…so untainted by everything. She had none of modern mankind’s negativity or cynicism and her feelings were real…she didn’t play games…it was unbelievably refreshing and surprisingly…exciting to him. There was so much that she had never seen…the world and all it’s wonders…well, this world…was all new. John wanted to be the one to show her…he wanted to see her face…her eyes.

“Ayla, How would you like to go Go-carting with me after we finish here?”, he asked, suddenly inspired, “I promise to take it easy. I’ll drive and you can sit next to me and we’ll take a picnic lunch for later…and then, if you want to, I’ll teach you to drive and you can drive us back! What do ya say?”

Ayla watched him devour his food. Most men she'd come across ate in a similar manner. It amused her and she wondered if all men ate like they wouldn't have a next meal. She tilted her head, furrowed her brow and listened as John explained that Yvaine was probably an actress. She had some idea of what an actress was because the hunters in the Clan acted out their hunting scenes sometimes.

She shook her head to his question about checking out the motion pictures in the entertainment room. "She told me she was a star from the sky, and when she fell she broke her leg. And she shines like a star. It's how I found her the night she arrived. But I suppose she could be this other type of star you speak of, though she didn't talk of acting." She looked down at his hand as it touched hers and then removed more abruptly than she cared for.

"I wish I could see the stars the way you saw them, as well, John." His name was so similar to Jondalar of the Zelandonii that she very nearly called him that. And that would have been embarrassing. She caught herself before she said it, however. She finished her breakfast shortly after he did, although she had begun before him.

Taking a drink of her tea, she lifted a brow. "Go-carting?" She didn't know what that meant. She also didn't know the word "drive". She was confused and her brow wrinkled to express it. "I think I would like to do this go-carting with you, John." She smiled. Even though she didn't know what she was committing herself to, she didn't think John would ask her to do something he thought was dangerous or dull.

She lifted her hand and called the golem over, not only to clear their plates, but to ask him to pack a lunch for them. Shortly afterward, the golem brought back a basket packed with food, complete with a red checkered tablecloth to sit on while they ate. She lifted the lid and peered in as it was set on the table between them. There were baguettes, wine, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and corn on the cobb. It smelled delicious, even though she was no longer hungry.
