"I wish I was Dalek. I think it would be great."

She sat on a sofa, feet up on the coffee table, and laptop resting on her thighs. A cord connected her wrist computer to the laptop, loading all kinds of files while she sifted through codes trying to reprogram a few of the features. Anything to keep her busy, and thankfully she'd been brought here with more then enough of her things to tinker with to at least keep her amused for a little while.

"I'd roll around the corridors, and cry "Exterminate!" And I will swivel my dome head around, and everytime you walk I will watch very carefully with my eye upon a stalk."

A dalek was one of the last things she'd want to be. A cockroach was preferable to those alien toe-rags. She liked the poem though, it was pretty funny. Ace and friends she'd served with had always come up with chants, poems, songs, anything to keep them entertained. Ways to lighten the mood between fighting so they didn't focus on how many friends they lost.

"And I will terrorise the cities. All the folk will scream and shout, and I will be invincible 'til my batteries run out."

She grinned as the right program opened on her screen, and cracked her knuckles before going to work. It'd been a while since she'd programmed anything, but what better time to refresh her memory? Not like she had anything better to do, and this mapping program might come in handy. Sort of a mapquest of the future. Typically she could use it, load information into a PDA or her holodeck to find her way around any city in any time. Unfortunately, the information in it had all of Earth's cities loaded in it, and was useless here. All she had to do though was make it so everywhere she went here was stored in the device's memory, and after another trip around the resort she'd have the whole thing mapped out. Then maybe she'd try going out into the desert, once she had this to help her find the way back.

"Ther-wait! No! Damn it. I didn't want to delete those...Three hundred cities. Gone." The brunette groaned, trying to bring back the files she'd only meant to put in back-up storage, but they were completely erased. Ace yawned and ran a hand through her hair, glancing at the wrist processor/watch, and taking note of the time. She'd heard of some kind of party later, and had every intention of going. A little fun, meet some new people, hopefully see Bones again...Right now though -- "I could use some coffee." She stated, glancing around in search of one of the golem things.

Ianto decided that being stuck at the resort wasn't completely bad. Jack was here and there were no aliens terrorizing the place. A definite two thumbs up in his book. He'd decided to do some exploring on his own today and had come across the library. It was heaven. He'd limited himself to selecting three books at first and had taken to them to sitting room to settle down and read. Just as he was about to walk in, however, he heard someone mention a Dalek and he froze.

At first frowning, a grin started to grow on his face before he entered the room. "That's... quite an interesting, yet humorous poem," he noted, settling down with his books on his lap. "I was not aware Daleks had batteries, though," he said teasingly. "Would have made it a lot easier defeating them if I'd know that."

Teasing aside, he studied the young woman. "So, since you know what a Dalek is, I assume you've either run into them or met someone who's told you about them." He wondered if she was from his... dimension, he supposed it would be called.

"It's more a power unit then a battery, and they don't really run out. Close enough though, right?" She chuckled and shrugged slightly, mildly surprised to find that someone else here knew and had fought the Daleks. Though, she supposed it wasn't that unlikely, what with the planet taking people from all different times and places.

"Spent three years blowing 'em to bits." Ace stated proudly. "How 'bout you?" He didn't exactly look like the fighting type to her, but who was she to judge? He'd fought a dalek and lived, after all, which was a feat not many could really boast about.

"I'm with Torchwood," Ianto told her. "Torchwood Cardiff to be precise. There's a rift that runs through space and time... and also right through the city. It's our job to take care of the things that come to Cardiff. I've had the pleasure of fighting the Daleks twice now," he added in a dry tone, carefully masking his true emotions. While the Cybermen were his worst nightmare, he wasn't too fond of the Daleks either. "The last time, they stole the Earth and my boss helped to get it back along with the Doctor." He paused for a moment. "You don't happen to know him, do you? The Doctor?"

"No kidding? Torchwood." She had to say, that was kind of a put off. Ace didn't exactly have the best history with that lot. Of course, she'd run into a different group, so she tried to keep an open mind. She had heard they got better -- rebuilt or something by someone new, less of the old 'if it's alien it's ours' mentality. "Last time I met someone from Torchwood I ended up getting shot, and spending three weeks in some prison cell. Can't go back to New York in the 1940s anymore, not that I'm missing out on too much there, but still..." The brunette shrugged.

"Stole the Earth -- see that is just not fair. I keep missing out on these interesting fights." A mild scowl tugged at her lips at the thought, as if denied an invitation to a party. "Yeah. Skinny old timelord, big hair, always showing up when there is trouble...I used to travel with him, but he was a different man back then. Actually ran into him here too couple days ago." The whole surprise factor wasn't all that high this time around -- where there were Daleks, the Doctor was usually close behind ready to knock 'em out, and save the Earth -- his usual gig.

"What's he to you?"

"I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him personally yet but I do know quite a lot about him. It was required at my first job at Torchwood but well... that kind of fell apart and I went to Cardiff. I'd seen first hand that he wasn't dangerous himself. And I suppose he was responsible for causing me to meet... someone very important to me," Ianto finished after a pause. "I'm grateful, I suppose."

She quirked a brow as he spoke, some how doubting he knew all that much about the Doctor. She knew about groups like Torchwood, U.N.I.T, things like that, but she had traveled with him for years and there was still so much she didn't know. The files these sort of groups had on him probably barely scratched the surface. Maybe they knew where he had been in the past, knew some of his old regenerations, even information about or from old companions -- it was small time. Still, Ace refrained from saying so. "You'll probably cross paths with him here eventually. He'll probably be at that party thing tonight actually. I could introduce you..."

Ace glanced down, pulling the wrist device off and carefully setting it on the table in front of her along with the laptop. "I'm Ace, by the way."

Ianto wasn't quite sure if he wanted to meet the Doctor... The curious half of him wanted to so he could ask many questions about what it was like traveling and all the things he'd seen.... However, the other half wanted to punch him in the face for what he'd done to Jack in the past.

"I honestly wasn't planning on going," Ianto admitted. "Everything's still so new."

He smiled slightly, holding out his hand to shake. "Jones. Ianto Jones. Keeper of the Archives and Chief Recorder of Torchwood Cardiff in the year 2008. Can't say I've ever traveled through time although the thought sounds appealing."

"Even more reason to go. Have fun, meet people, a few drinks to make everything go down easier. Why don't you go with me?" She said, shaking his hand pleasantly now that it was free from all the computer bits. Her grin widened a bit as he offered a year as well, as not many did. Granted, not many had experience with time travelers, so it was understandable.

"It's addicting, but not for everyone." Ace commented. "When did you get here, Ianto?"

Ianto put on his 'I'm smiling just to be pleasant' look. "Thank you for offering, but I'm afraid I'm going to decline. I've only arrived yesterday and haven't been here for very long." A perfect reason for going to the party to meet other people, Ianto realized after he spoke, but he really didn't do parties...

She rolled her eyes but didn't say anything more about it. She'd drag him there later. If he kept her interested, that is. "So how'd you get into Torchwood and aliens and all that?" Ace asked. Sure alien stuff happened all the time, but generally normal people did everything they could to explain it away, or they went completely nutjob-overthetop. Few went on to become part of U.N.I.T or Torchwood. Generally the sort that did move on to those sort of things had strong characters.

A short laugh burst from Ianto's throat. "I was used a hostage against Torchwood by an alien. Almost got my throat ripped out. It was very... eventful. What about you? How did you meet the Doctor?" he asked curiously.

"I was transported to Ice World on Svartos when I was 15 by a time storm, worked there for nearly a year before the Doctor showed up. His companion at the time left to travel with this guy Glitz and so I took her place." She explained, not exactly as exciting as being held hostage, but uncommon to boot.

"Are you friends with that Rose chick then? The one traveling with him now?" Ace asked. "Or someone else the Doc has come across?"

"He picks them up from all over the place, doesn't he," Ianto noted, a slight smile sneaking onto his face. "At first I thought perhaps it was just from around my time but then I learned it was different from another companion. He's around here. His name is Jack. I've never actually met Rose before but I've seen her around a few times."

"He does. Goes with the territory, I guess." She shrugged slightly. Her brows furrowed together slightly at mention of Jack. The name sounded vaguely familiar, aside from being a common name, but couldn't be...The Jack she was thinking of was from decades before this man was even born. Granted, the Doctor could be responsible for that. It was interesting that so many companions and friends of such have ended up here. Convenient though. It would no doubt come in handy later.

"I'd like to meet him. Maybe we should all get together." She laughed slightly at the thought.

"2008 then." She tried to recall her last visit to that time. It had been a while. It was a transitional sort of era, the 21st century. When alien life started to be recognized by the human race. The time afterward was more interesting. "Can't say I've been there often. Didn't like the feel of it..." She'd showed up around the time of Mr.Saxon, and hadn't been close enough to him to realize what exactly about it made her uncomfortable.

Ianto saw the way she reacted when he mentioned Jack. "Do you... know him?" he asked slowly. "Captain Jack Harkness. He's... also a sort of time traveler. Sort of. Not in my time anymore, though. I'm sure he'd love to met another friend of the Doctor's."

Ianto smiled wryly at her talk of the 21st century. "It has it's ups and downs. Jack says the 21st century is when everything changes." He paused. "Do you know if that's true?" He wanted to know if being with Torchwood really made an impact on the world... He didn't regret doing his job for a second. If he could save just one innocent life, then it was all worth it in Ianto's eyes. A small part of him wondered if the 21st century was when something... important happened, if Ianto would ever get to see it now.

"I know of him, I think." She said with a small shrug. Being a time traveler made it made it more likely that she was thinking of the same person. "I heard rumors of him, but it was back in 1890-something." Ace wasn't sure the exact year, but remembered hearing of someone named Jack working for Torchwood that new of the Doctor. She would've looked more into it, but she heard whoever he was he hadn't given up too much information on the timelord so she wasn't all that concerned.

"Pretty much. Aliens have lived quietly among the human race for ages. 21st century is when people start accepting them as a part of everyday life. I'm sure your lot will play a big part in that." She said.

"Yes, he was... around then," Ianto admitted. "He's been around for a while, waiting for the Doctor." His voice became softer. "I met him near the end of that time."

Ianto shifted so he could get more comfortable. "Really? I thought it would be something... bigger than that, the way Jack makes it sound," he admitted. "Still, at least it's not something horrible." He paused. "Do you think we'll ever leave here?"

She didn't say anything on that account. Sitting around waiting for the Doctor seemed kind of pointless, but to each his own, she supposed.

"It's bigger then it sounds." She said. "It's really not good to know too much about your own future though." If she remembered right, things got worse before they got better. The human race wasn't exactly all that welcoming of the idea of living in peace with alien races at first. They could barely keep peace among themselves. Not to mention the more hostile races that came to Earth, but it all worked itself out eventually.

"Yeah. I can't stay in one place for too long, and the Doctor is just as restless. I'm sure we'll find a way out of here."

Ianto nodded in agreement. "That it isn't. I'll just have to wait and see if I make it that far," he said with a sort of odd amusement to his tone. After working for so long with Torchwood and seeing the things he'd seen, he found it easier to joke about dying as the time went by.

Restless. That word got Ianto thinking about Jack again. Jack was from the future and from the stars... Was he truly happy staying in one place? He'd leave eventually, Ianto felt... but whether it would be before or after Ianto or Gwen died, he wasn't sure.

"Yeah. You're going to have to be careful. It's not the most exciting era, but some dangerous stuff happens now and then. Especially around Christmas...Never understood that -- why the holidays attract so much trouble." She shrugged. It didn't make much difference. Ace didn't really celebrate Christmas, and had no one to spend it with anyways.

"So Ianto, what's buggin' you?" The brunette may not be close to all that many people, but she could still tell when someone was feeling a little off...And he looked that way, especially at mention of the Doctor.

"You get a funny look about you whenever the Doctor is brought up." She pointed out, though still keeping up a friendly sort of smile. It wasn't all that surprising. You didn't actually have to meet the timelord to have mixed feelings about him, but it made her curious nonetheless. "What'd the skinny dolt do to get on your bad side?"

Honestly, she loved the Doctor to death, but that didn't mean she couldn't stand him a lot of the time. It was why she'd left him, a couple times in fact. Ace wouldn't fail to join up with him is he needed her help, but she doubted she would ever want to really travel with him again. This new regeneration was a lot more tolerable so far, but it was hard to tell after less then a day with him.

"It's... complicated. I've never really met him so it's nothing he's done against me... More so how he's treated a few people I care about. But then, I do have to thank him because without him, I wouldn't have met those people in the first place." Ianto paused for a moment, realizing just how true that statement was. Without the Doctor, he would never have met Jack but on a wider level, without the Doctor there would be no Torchwood. "All of them."

[info]timevigilante

"How he's treated them..." She repeated. That didn't sound good. Ace had met the Doctor here, and he'd seemed a lot different. More immature, playful, sad, but different from the time lord she'd left. Though she supposed it was hard to tell how much of the old regeneration had stuck around from the short time they were together here. "That sounds a bit like my old Doctor. Couldn't have been too bad though if your friend, Jack, was still waiting for him."

She shrugged it off, and pulled her computer back up to toy with the files on her wrist processor. "Anyways, Cardiff in 2008..." Ace said, putting that in under a file labeled Torchwood that had other locations and time frames for other bases that she made a point to avoid after that first run in with the group. This one might be bit more accepting of a visit from her, as Jack was apparently another companion, but she wasn't going to seek them out if she didn't have to. "So, bet you get all manner of trouble there. That rift and all. Daleks, cybermen, sontarans...Have you ever seen a Chelonian? Those are weird as hell. Robotic-humanoid turtle things. Used to hate humans, thought we were parasites -- now they spend all their time arranging flowers." She laughed, it had been so long since she'd thought about those things, but it wasn't often she met someone who would listen and not think she was crazy.

Ianto resisted the urge to snort. "He was waiting for him because he had a... problem he felt only the Doctor could help him with," he stated, trying not to sound bitter. "In the end, the Doctor couldn't do anything so Jack wasted years of his life just waiting around for this man to show up and do nothing." Run away from him, too, Ianto added silently.

Ianto peered curiously at the wrist device. "What's that?" he asked, wondering if it was anything like Jack's. "I've seen Daleks and Cybermen," he admitted, keeping his tone neutral. "Heard of the Sontarans. Never seen a Chelonian. What with comes through the Rift, maybe one day I will. Everyday is definitely interesting when you're with Torchwood, though. I have to say, I much prefer and enjoy working in Cardiff than I did in London."

"Well, assuming he's the Jack I'm thinking of wasting a few years isn't that much of a problem for him." There were rumors. How could there not be? It wasn't every day you heard of a guy who couldn't die.

"It's a wrist processor. Saves my ass on a regular basis. I have all the locations of Torchwood, U.N.I.T, SpaceFleet, and other more rag-tag groups through time so I know who I can go to and who to avoid. Basic information on different aliens and people I've met. Maps of times and places I frequent. Stuff like that all stored on here that I can bring up on any computer. It also lets me interface with computers to take or alter information." She explained, as she pulled up a file on Chelonians.

"There is actually a small group of them living in the Amazon, but I wouldn't recommend going looking for them. They're docile enough now, but don't appreciate when humans stumble across their land." She learned that one the hard way. Granted, most of what she learned was through experience, and not always good experiences.

"As for the other two...I don't often see much of Cybermen. Daleks on the other hand are like cockroaches, I swear. By my time line there is a new Skaro in the twenty-fifth century, but it's always hard to tell what events are fixed and what isn't."

"I had a friend who would have loved to borrow that," Ianto said with a smile as he thought of Tosh. "See how it worked, take it apart, and put it back together again. It sounds like a very handy device." He idly wondered if Jack's wrist strap could do the same thing. Maybe, since Jack seemed to be more far in the future than Ace, it was an upgraded version? Perhaps he'd ask Jack about it later.

"I've had a few bad experiences with both the Cybermen and the Daleks that I, quite frankly, hope to God I never have to go through again. The first time was on of the worst times in my life," he admitted, opening himself up more to the young woman. "Have you heard of the Battle of Canary Wharf? The Cybermen came through from a parallel universe the same time the Daleks came through the Void... 27 survivors at Torchwood One out of over 700 staff. I used to wonder if I was glad to be lucky number 27. The aftermath of it..." Ianto didn't go on. He certainly wasn't glad that it had happened but it had led him to Jack and for that, he was thankful. Jack had given him his life back.

"As for the other two...I don't often see much of Cybermen. Daleks on the other hand are like cockroaches, I swear. By my time line there is a new Skaro in the twenty-fifth century, but it's always hard to tell what events are fixed and what isn't."

"It keeps me out of trouble, most of the time." Kept her out of trouble as much as a device could anyways. "It also connects to some of the weapons I've got as well. Like, I've got a voice activated dart gun that connects to it on my fore arm, and fires all kinds of useful toys." Ace commented, not actually having that toy on her at the moment. She'd taken to carrying a lot less in that department since arriving, though there was still a bit of nitro-9 on her belt, and a draconian army knife in her boot. She carried those out of habit, never being without them.

"Sure have. I was actually in Glasgow at the time. Not far from that Torchwood base, saved their asses a few times. Bunch of puny soldier Daleks. I was so jealous when I found out I'd missed out on the Cult of Skaro." Ace lived for blowing those tin cans sky high, and the soldier daleks were easy picking in her opinion.

Ianto had to severely clamp down on himself not to snap at Ace. She was from a different time. She was different. She probably had had so many run-ins with Daleks, from the way she talked about them, that she was used to them now. Ianto wished he had been far away from Torchwood when the Battle of Canary Wharf happened. He did his best to be civil. "I didn't see the Cult of Skaro. Didn't learn about them until later. I was trying to help people that were being taken away by the Cybermen." And some help I was, Ianto thought bitterly to himself. He barely had had any field training at the time and had no idea what the hell to do. It had been terrifying.

He dug into his pocket and pulled out his stopwatch with a small humorless smile. "This is the only 'weapon' I brought with me. Still, it's quiet useful."

"Oh -- uh, sorry. I didn't mean to come off as inconsiderate." She gave a sheepish half smile. Ace often forgot that not everyone had the experience with Daleks that she did. For the guys in the Spacefleet it was common place to joke, sing silly songs, swap stories about blowing to bits higher ranking Daleks. "Don't be to hard on yourself." She added, you could always tell. The new guys in the fleet always had that bitter look when things the first few times, thinking that whatever when wrong was their fault. "You couldn't help everybody. Between Daleks and Cybermen, I mean, the fact that you could push past your own fear to help anyone else -- it's more then most could do."

"A stopwatch, huh?" Ace looked at her own wrist. "I'm sure this thing has a timer on it somewhere." She joked, the time was hardly a crucial feature on the processor.

"I could give you something with a little more bang." She grinned. "I've got loads of weapons, even found some of my old ones still stored in the TARDIS."

Ianto forced a smile for a moment to be polite. He didn't really want to talk about Canary Wharf with someone he'd only just met. By people, he really meant Lisa, and he'd failed her. She'd died and had become a shell of herself, slowly drifting away from him until that day at Torchwood Three.

Switching the conversation, he was silent for a moment before he asked, "The TARDIS is here?" The way he said it made it seem like he wasn't quite sure to be happy or glad about that. If he was completely honest with himself, he had always wanted to see the inside of the famous blue box...

"Yeah. She's stuck though, won't move an inch." She answered. That would be her new goal though while she was here. Granted, if the Doctor couldn't coax the old girl into moving, Ace didn't stand much of a chance, but that wouldn't stop her from trying. Besides, it wouldn't be the first time she'd figured something out about the TARDIS that the Doctor hadn't known about.

"Still, it's nice. A little piece of home on this rock." Ace commented, more to herself really. She'd been a lot more thankful then she let on when she found out the Doctor was here, but he was the closest thing to family she had anymore.

"I've never seen it," Ianto admitted. "Always wondered what it was like on the inside." He slowly grinned. "I know it's bigger," he added with a chuckle. "I've seen photos of it and through a CCTV once or twice but never the real thing."

"It used to be clean cut, white walls, the center console in the middle very neat -- he changed the desktop theme though. Now it's all metal and I think the theme is coral or something. It's not just big though, it's huge. We used to have a swimming pool if that gives you any idea. I've never even managed to see every room." She explained. Ianto seemed nice, and if he met the Doctor she doubted the timelord would have a problem showing off the TARDIS, but Ace wouldn't promise him that.

"Jack's described it to me before. His room here looks like his old room in the TARDIS so I suppose I know a bit about what it looks like because of that. Not the room with the center console, though. It... seems to be quite a powerful spaceship," he remarked, thinking about the Doctor had used it to bring the Earth back where it belonged.

"She's a very powerful old ship." Ace agreed, having picked up the Doctor's habit of thinking of the ship as a 'she' rather than an 'it.' "I'm sure if you really wanted to see it, the planet could give you a good replica of at least the console room." She commented with a light shrug.

"That's alright," Ianto told her. "Jack's room looks close enough, I'm sure." He paused for a moment, unsure of what to say next. It'd been very nice talking with Ace even though he'd originally come down to read.

"Ah well, nothing can really compare to the real thing. Much more impressive." She commented, closing her computer, and gathering the devices. "Nice talkin' with you, Ianto. I best get going though. Things do do. See you around." Ace said, rising to her feet.

Ianto smiled and nodded in reply. "It was a pleasure. See you around, Ace." He waited until she left the room, then settled back to get down to some reading.
