Day Two
Who: Miguel Alvarez and Rose Tyler
What: Miguel wakes up at Mirage and meets Rose.
When: 10:45 AM
Where: Out in the gardens
Status: Complete
Rating: PG for Language

Back in solitary.

Miguel didn't know how much worse his life could get at this moment as he collapsed on the hard cot attached to one of the walls. It was the same room he had spent most of his time at Oz inside of and the familiarity of those four walls were closing in on him, making the convict feel like throwing up. In fact, he could feel the bile rising in his throat and turned to the toilet where he dry heaved for a few minutes. Christ, he couldn't believe he was back in here again, trapped once more in the metal cell. "Fucking moron", Miguel swore at himself. "El burro sabe mas que tu". How could he have been so stupid to lose his temper at the parole meeting and actually attack one of the parole board members?

"I'm never going to see the outside of this place", he sighed as he laid back down on the bed. For a long while Miguel let that sad fact sink into his brain before he drifted off, still fully clothed on the prison bed. The criminal never felt the planet call out to him nor did he feel it pull him from his cell and dump him into the gardens of the dude ranch. There he slept for about a half and hour until the hard ground and bright sunlight finally forced Miguel awake. It seemed like a beautiful dream to Alvarez when he opened his eyes and saw the beautiful lush garden, the rustic buildings and the far off mountains. Not exactly a place Miguel would ever dream himself to but he was thankful for any respite from his cold prison cell. After about a ten minutes of simply staring at his surroundings, it dawned upon Miguel that this was no dream.

"No dream is this real", he spoke out loud, staring up at the sky in wonderment. How long had it been since he had seen the sky? Probably since his escape last year. His suspicious were confirmed when Miguel tripped up on a tree root and hit the ground face first. It hurt but the pain simply caused him to laugh. This was real! He could feel the grass beneath his body and Miguel kissed the ground with joy. "I'm free", he laughed, climbing to his feet before crying out, "I'm free!"

That was when Miguel realized he wasn’t alone.

It was a little relieving to hear there were other people at first but Miguel's natural wariness reminded him that being around others wasn't always a good thing. Especially when someone was on their own without any friends to back them. 'But this isn't Oz', he inwardly reasoned. 'No one iss going to try to shank me'. At least Miguel hoped not.

As Rose turned, Miguel followed after and took the opportunity to get a good look at the blond. It was only natural considering he had just spent five years in prison where the only females were Sister Pete the elderly nun, Doctor Nathan, and the frighting C.O. officer Claire. It wasn't like he saw a lot of women.

When she mentioned people made of stone Miguel gave her look of disbelief. "You're kidding me. How can people made of stone exist?" Miguel shook his head. "Esto es una locura", he muttered in Spanish before realizing it might be rude to speak in Spanish when Rose was clearly English. Miguel didn't want her to think he was saying rude things about her. "This place is crazy", he repeated in English.

"So if you ain't from around here, where are you from?" Miguel asked, glancing at Rose's face as they moved toward the buildings. "Judging by the accent, I'd say England right?"

"No, I'm not," she replied with a laugh. "I have no idea what this place is. It seems to be simply called The Planet, and there are these people made of stone."

She heard him mutter in Spanish, but couldn't catch anything but the "locura"-- she wasn't sure if he was talking about her or something else, but she kept her mouth shut, nodding when he repeated himself in English. "Yeah, it is. But everything seems pretty nice so far."

"England, yeah. London, actually. Where are you from?"

"New York city", Miguel replied. "So this is quite a change of scenery". As they came closer to the center of the dude ranch, Miguel noticed the wall and upon it a large tablet that was inscribed with the laws of the planet. Or at least they read like laws to him.

"Your every need will be fulfilled. You will have a place to live. You will have food and clothing....You will not be able to leave?" He glanced at Rose before re-reading the tablet. "Sounds like a prison", Miguel muttered before pausing. "Well, except a helluva lot nicer looking". Still, the idea of going from one prison to another didn't sit well with Miguel. 'It could be worse', a voice silently reminded him. That was true. He could still be solitary.

"Every need fulfilled", Miguel repeated. He had a tendency to do that but it was mostly because of the shock of the sudden change from Oz to this. While he might be a little apprehensive now he was still mostly happy about his new home. "This shit is for real?" he questioned Rose. "Clothes, food, it's all taken care of?"

Rose slowed to a stop beside him as he read the tablet. She reread it herself, half-hoping that there would be something new there, something to help her or the Doctor find a way to get out of here, to make the TARDIS work so that they could return. She knew how antsy he would get, stuck in one place for too long.

"Every need. At least, from what we can tell. The food's great, our rooms are exactly like we want them-" Well. She wondered what on earth prompted the room to give her and the Doctor only one bed between the two of them, but he didn't really sleep often, so it worked out okay. But still? Awkward- "I don't understand it, but it's all been pretty fantastic so far."

Miguel nodded as Rose talked, noticing her use of 'we' which made him wonder if she wasn't with her boyfriend or something here. Not that it wasn't any of Miguel's business but he was curious so he asked. "You were brought here with your boyfriend then?" That was interesting and made Miguel wonder why he came alone from Oz. Probably because he was alone in his cell and after a moment Miguel decided he was better off without any of the other convicts. No doubt they'd just get him into trouble.

"Food sounds good", he said with interest. Miguel had once been starved by the guards for a while after what he had done to Rivera and since then Miguel was always interested in getting food when he could. Nothing like being starved to make you appreciate the simple things like food.

"Could you show me around?" he asked Rose. "I mean, I know you've done a lot for me already by answering my questions but I'd appreciate any help I could get around here. My head's still spinning from all this".

"Boyfriend?" Rose blinked and then laughed, shaking her head. "I- no. I came here with the Doctor. He's..He's a Time Lord. We travel a lot- through space and time and- oh, it's complicated." God, Miguel probably thought she sounded completely off her rocker. "We're just friends." Even if she sometimes wished it were more.

"Yeah, I could do that. The Doctor's off trying to fix the TARDIS- er. That's what we came here in. It's his time machine. Anyways. I've got the afternoon free- I wouldn't mind. Suppose we could go find somebody who might know where you're staying. And..are you hungry or anything?"

The convict paused and blinked a few times as Rose explained who her friend was. Doctor he understood but Time Lord? What did that mean? And then she started talking about space and time travel which caused Miguel's eyes to widen a little. "Que?" was all he managed to say. Yes, he was starting to think Rose was off her rocker but after a moment he decided that he couldn't judge her. Miguel had just woken up on another planet after all.

"Time machine"" Miguel murmured before shaking and getting back to Rose's questions. "Yeah, that sounds good to me. Where are the rooms?" Miguel wasn't sure if should say anything about this time travel stuff or what exactly to say but one comment came to mind. "I guess coming here wasn't that strange for you then, if you're a...a time traveler. Muy extraño, this is very strange", he explained to Rose.

"Planet's called Mirage, waking up in strange places, time-travelers...feels like I woke up in a scifi novel, you know?"

"Extraño?" she asked, frowning slightly in confusion. "Sorry, I don't speak any Spanish. I have a cousin that does, though. Not that that does me any good now, but- yeah." Okay. She was shutting up now.

"No, it wasn't so terribly strange. We were heading for another planet, actually, when we showed up here instead." She lifted a shoulder in a shrug, then stepped back, turning toward the main lobby. "Come on, love. We'll find your room and then see about some food." She smiled a bit as she glanced over to him. "Yeah, I can see how it's a bit like a scifi novel. But then...All that scifi stuff is like nothing to me- not with everything the Doctor's shown me."

"It means strange", Miguel replied. "Sorry, I learned Spanish first and English second. I kinda just talk in both sometimes." He followed Rose as she turned toward the main lobby, smiling appreciatively. Being shown around by a cute blond, even if she might have a screw loose, was a nice change for Miguel. As they entered the lobby Miguel spotted the main desk but what really caught his eye was the blinking light coming from one of the key slots behind the desk. "How do you know which room is yours? I mean, does that blinking light have anything to do with it?"

Miguel moved in closer to investigate and reached over the desk to grab the key. "C127", he read out loud. Since this was the only key that Miguel could see he had to wonder if it was his. "Hey Rose, do you know where C127 is?"

"Oh, you don't have to apologize," she said, waving a hand. She watched as he picked a key out. "Back this way, I think." She turned again, waiting for him to walk with her as she started toward the lodging units. "One-twenty-seven means it'll be on the first floor. C is which unit you're in." She turned down another corridor. "It seems like a pretty nice place, though. Nobody seems really unhappy, so far as I can tell."

It was a little like follow the leader. Rose lead and Miguel followed but he didn't mind in the least. If anything, he got to check her out a few times but mostly she seemed really nice. Reaching the lodging units, Miguel whistled as he took in the beautiful backdrop of the fields and lake behind the unit. "I can't imagine anyone being unhappy here. There are a lot worse places to wake up to then a resort", Miguel chuckled as he moved forward in the buildings and headed down the corridor with Rose.

The pair had no trouble finding Miguel's room and within seconds he had the door open to reveal a rather ordinary bland room. Or it was ordinary at first. It seemed like the room blinked for a moment before shifting. A brief shred of fear went through Miguel when he thought for a second it was going to turn into a prison cell but he relaxed as it changed into another ordinary room. A little bit bigger than the last one but with rich brown walls and lots of windows.

"Holy shit", he breathed as he stepped into the room. "This is where I'm sleeping? Nice". The convict did a quick inspection of the room and noticed that like Rose had said, everything he could possibly need was there. "This is amazing".

"It seems to change with whatever you want or need," she said, poking her head into the room after it shifted. "Ours looks like the inside of the TARDIS. It's not a bad replica." She smiled a bit at his awe. "Yeah, it's yours. I'd imagine if you wanted something-- anything-- it would show up pretty quickly, too."

A room that could change to suit your needs and a girl who claimed to travel through space and time. If someone had told Miguel that he would have encountered either, he would have told them they were nuts. But here he was, right in the middle of a strange but clearly powerful world. "This is really amazing", Miguel repeated, still having trouble getting his head around it all.

"It's like someone blessed us, you know?" Miguel added with a smile but thanks to his natural cynicism, that smile didn't last long. "Or there could be a nasty surprise in store for us yet". Few things in life were free but Miguel pushed that negative thought out of his mind. "Screw it, might as well enjoy while it lasts, right?" he said with another smile at Rose.

"So what about that food we were talking about?"

"That's what we're worried about," Rose admitted. "It seems so strange that we'd get pulled here and just given anything and everything we could want." Well. Except the freedom to leave, which she knew the Doctor wanted. She returned his smile. "Yeah. Yeah, we should."

Rose stepped back into the hallway. "Depends on what you want. I've only had the chips, but oh my god, they are to die for."

Miguel left the room with a twinge of reluctance but the criminal remaindered himself that one, he could return later and two, he didn't want to be stuck in any one room for a long period of time. "Chips?" Miguel asked as he locked the door behind him. "Like potato chips...oh wait, that's what you guys call fries in Britain, right?" he said, cluing in. "I think I had enough fries to last me a life time at--" Miguel broke off.

He almost said Oz, which would have been really stupid of the criminal if Rose knew what Oz stood for. It was slang on the streets for the Oswald State Correctional Facility and Miguel didn't want people to know he had been in prison. Talk about getting off on the wrong foot and he knew how they'd look at him after they knew truth.

Realizing that he was probably carrying the awkward pause on for too long, Miguel continued talking. "Yeah, I'm more in the mood for something more filling than fries." The pair headed out of Unit C and made their way to main building where the restaurant was located. Miguel let out a low whistle as they entered. "Wow, I'm definitely under-dressed for this place", he said, glancing down at his dark loose jeans and sleeveless t-shirt.

"Hope they don't have a dress code. So, where do you want to sit?"
