Day Seven
Who?: Katara and Miguel
What?: Pheromone Extravaganza
Where?: The Lake
When? Day Seven; Early Afternoon- just after lunch
Rating: PG
Status: Complete

Katara felt a little bit sore when she awoke that day. The training session with Xena had been tougher on her than she thought. Then again, the waterbender hadn’t exactly taken precautions before the work-out and stretched or anything. All in all, the soreness was pleasant. It meant she had been productive instead of sitting around doing nothing.

Instead of dressing in her customary Water Tribe ensemble, she decided to wear something else. Ever since Aang, Sokka, Toph, and Katara had stolen Fire Nation clothes to disguise themselves, she had enjoyed the look; however, she rarely wore it because she enjoyed showing her heritage.

The femme donned a cropped red top with gold trim that revealed her flat belly, and a red skirt, with attached pants of a darker shade of red, both of which had gold trim. Katara couldn’t help, but to keep wearing her mother’s necklace because she loved it so much. This time she decided to leave her hair down, though she did slip beads onto two strands and tied them together at the back of her head.

After she was ready, she went to the kitchens to eat a fruit filled breakfast of berries. Once she’d finished she decided to check out the library she’d happened upon the other day.

Preferring to learn about truthful things opposed to fiction, Katara searched through the non-fiction section of the library. There were shelves upon shelves of books. It may not have been as vastly huge as Wan Shi Tong’s Library, but there were books here that the knowledge spirit didn’t have. The owl had only had what his Knowledge Seekers could find, and the foxes couldn’t find things in her world that were here because this was a combination of many worlds and times.

What Katara truly wanted was to find a way back to her home world, but the Planet didn’t seem to have any knowledge of the way this world really worked. There was a book that said something about how the Mirage would change into different kinds of resorts. Right now it was a dude ranch resort, she learned. Dude ranches existed in her world by different names, but they were as pampered as this one. Normally they were just used as farms. The idea that it would change was endearing. A new environment would prove to be some interest. Then again, if it changed all the time it would be more difficult to come up with a solid plan of escape. With a sigh she continued her research.

After quite a while of reading, a grumble from her stomach signaled lunch time. Because it seemed Katara would have all the time in the world to continue her research, she stood. With a passing glance at the generous piles of books she had acquired, the waterbender left the library, feeling only slightly guilty about not putting them back. It was simply another show of contempt for the Planet, despite the fact that she knew it wouldn’t be hard for it to put a few books away.

Wanting a good lunch, Katara went to the restaurant for a meal. She ordered noodles with teriyaki chicken-pig. To drink she ordered green tea. Her meal was simple, but filling and tasty. After that she decided to go outside and practice her bending. If she got rusty, she would be very unhappy with herself. Even though she didn’t seem to need it now, she might need it later to escape, or if she was propelled back into her world. The latter was an futile dream, but even knowing that didn’t make it go away.

When she stepped outside, the Water Tribe femme thought the air smelled a bit strange, as if too many strong smelling flowers were bunched up near by. Maybe she would get used to it.  With a shrug, she continued toward the lake.

Once she was there, she decided she’d rather stand in the lake to bend, than outside it. It felt more comfortable that way, more natural. Besides, maybe the too-sweet scent in the air wouldn’t be as strong there.

Katara removed her clothes and shoes, revealing her underwear- though this wasn’t nearly as risqué as modern undies. It consisted of white fabric that wrapped around her chest, and another piece that wrapped around her lower body to her knees.  She walked into the water until her legs were submerged to her shins.

The waterbender warmed up by pushing and pulling the water with smooth, slow movements. Eventually she built them up to smaller waves, moving separately from the waves caused by the natural currents of the lake. Eventually these turned into large waves. Once the waves were shoulder height, she had one swirl around her until she was completely surrounded by a wall of water. With another movement the wall broke apart into eight separate sections of water, which she then used to lash out in different directions. The octopus form wasn’t a difficult move for her, but she always wanted to absolutely perfect it, so she continued controlling all eight limbs at once. Eventually she would move on to a larger number of limbs.

Miguel had gotten up at around 9am and decided to hit the gym before breakfast. In Oz gym privileges were considered the worst to lose because the gym was where you could strengthen the only weapon the guards couldn't take away from you: your body. A physically strong man had a better chance of surviving and of fighting off attacks so most prisoners usually wanted a chance to improve that body.

While Miguel was planning on avoiding any and all fights that he could in Mirage it didn't make sense to stop working out. After all, just because he didn't want a fight didn't mean someone wasn't going to try fucking with him. He stretched out his muscles before beginning a series of strength training exercises before hitting a punching bag for a bit. Miguel use to box back when he was free and found it was a good way to relax and burn off some energy.

After a while he got hungry so the convict got a shower and got dressed in dark gray jeans and a white sleeveless shirt before heading to the kitchen for some food. It quickly discovered why he was so hungry when he saw the clock in the kitchen. "Lunchtime", he muttered as he fixed himself a sandwich and grabbed some milk. Lunch didn't last long and soon Miguel was wondering what else to do. It was too nice a day to spend outside so Miguel decided a walk couldn't hurt. Maybe he'd head down to the lake for some fishing.

Once he got outside however Miguel noticed something was different. The air smelled funny, a good fruity smell to him that made the Latino inhale deeply. What a great place he thought, smiling as he looked around. What a beautiful day. The sun was sparkling off the lake, making it all the more enticing and Miguel thought to himself, Maybe a swim would be better. Walking along a beaten path though the field, Miguel just couldn't get over how beautiful and sunny it was. In fact, he felt particularly hot and took off his shirt and tucked it in to let it hang from his jeans.

When Miguel drew closer to the water he noticed something strange. Bits of water seemed to be lifting up from the lake as if controlled by magic. Was this more the planet's strange surprises? Curious, Miguel started moving up along side the lake until he found the source of this moving water.

It was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen in his life. The first thought in his mind was 'Goddess'. The water lifted up and moved around in such graceful way, matching her movements. It was like watching a skillful dance with the elements or so Miguel fancied. So entranced was he that as Miguel walked closer and closer to the lake he hadn't even realized that the water was now reaching his knees.

"Who are you?" he said with wonder.

Katara didn’t see the man as he approached, simply continuing her waterbending. At one point she even made another limb of water, so she controlled nine instead of eight. Bending took a lot of physical work as the bender had to move with their element in order for it to work. It was really just an extension of the body, or extensions in the case of the octopus form. This was ten times easier to the Water Tribe femme than training with a staff had been, and she also felt it was more convenient. However, that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to train again. It had been a good work out, and if she was ever in a pinch and couldn’t afford the time it took to bend water out of objects, she could just use a staff. She hadn’t seen Xena that day, though, so she figured maybe today hadn’t been the best of training days.

As she practiced, Katara didn’t see the man approaching her, or she might have stopped. Instead she sent five of the nine limbs into a whipping motion- while the other four remained waving in place as if to protect her- just as she heard a voice and turned her head to see one of the whips heading straight for him. Immediately she broke her form, and all liquids previously under her control fell with a splash into the water. “Oh! I’m sorry!” She cried out. “I was just… waterbending.” This was the second time she had attacked someone while waterbending. They’d both been deliberate, but neither was really meant to harm an innocent person.

She half-walked half-waded nearer to him, looking him over. He was quite attractive now that she was close enough to see his features. He was also wearing pants that weren’t rolled up to prevent them from getting wet. “You’re okay, right? I’m really sorry about that. If I’d known you were there I wouldn’t have done that. I thought I was only whipping the air.” The waterbender asked apologetically before offering her hand. “I’m Katara.”

The water was now up to her lower thighs, wetting the bottom of her underwear. “Come on. Let’s get out of the lake. I’ll bend the water out of your pants for you.” She offered.

The water was coming directly at Miguel and he flinched instinctively but it didn't hit him. Instead it fell harmlessly back into the lake. She did that, Miguel realized, feeling a mixture of awe and gratitude. "Don't be sorry", Miguel said quickly, wanting to make everything okay.

"I should be sorry, I'm the one interrupting you." His eyes followed Katara as she moved toward him and Miguel was painfully aware of how long it had been since he had seen a woman as beautiful as her. Some men Miguel knew might have turned ugly at the sight of a pretty young half-clothed in front of them and some would get dangerous but Miguel was not one of those men. He had seen too many people get hurt when a man let his prick dictate what he should do so he tried very hard to push out all inappropriate thoughts at that point.

"I'm Miguel", he said as he took her delicate hand with his own. He kept his eyes on her face and was proud of that accomplishment until Katara mentioned his pants. He caught a glimpse of her well formed body as looked down at the water. The Latino would have stared harder except he suddenly realized he was in the water. "Holy shit", he murmured. "I didn't know I was in the lake". He shook his head in confusion before following Katara out of the water.

"You'll water bend my pants?" That sounded like innuendo to Miguel and he had trouble not laughing. "Sure", he said chuckle. "Water-bending, that was what you were doing just then? It was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Well, second beautiful", he added as he met Katara's eyes.

Katara was grateful he wasn’t angry with her. After all, it had missed him, so he wasn’t hurt, and he was already wet. He seemed like a genuinely sweet natured man. “No, no. Of course you’re not interrupting. I was just practicing a little. I could use a break, though.” Just as he hadn’t wanted her to trouble herself, she didn’t want him to trouble himself over apologies, though maybe not for the same reasons; however, she figured his reasons were the same ones as hers. After all, the Water Tribe femme was a genuinely sweet natured woman herself most of the time.

A smile lit her features as he introduced himself. “Nice to meet you, Miguel. That’s an interesting name.” However, her brows soon creased together as he registered shock at being in the water. How could a person not know they were up to their knees in a lake? For a split second, Katara wondered if she had indeed accidentally whipped him in his head with the water-limb, but she realized that was silly. If she’d done that, he would have fallen all the way into the water, and he would definitely have a mark on his face. A second thought occurred to her that he might be missing some of his wits. Perhaps she would learn more about this theory as time passed.

The waterbender wasn’t really sure what he found funny about bending water out of his pants, so she didn’t say anything about it. Chances were it might be something completely obvious, and she would look silly for not knowing. Instead, Katara led him out of the lake to shore. When he asked if waterbending had been what she was doing, she grinned and turned to face him. “Yes, it is.” Then he spoke of how beautiful it was, though it was only second in place of something more appealing. By the way he looked at her, she knew what he meant, and a deep blush coloured her cheeks.

“Um… Thanks.” Katara said nervously before quickly taking a stance and moving her arms and hands in a fluid movement. The water was pulled from Miguel’s pants, leaving them completely dry. In another movement, she too was dry, and she returned the water to the lake.

“So, Miguel, have you been here long?” She asked, changing the subject.

His eyes widened as with a mere gesture Katara drew the water out out of his soaked jeans. Miguel had to admit he felt more comfortable now that his jeans were dry and watched, fascinated, as Katara used the same gesture to take the water out of her own clothes. "That is amazing", he murmured as he watched the water return to the lake. "Oh? How long have I been here?" Miguel repeated her question, thinking to himself. "About six days now but the time's been flying so it doesn't feel like that long", he finished with a smile. "Between all the new people coming everyday, the activities and things to do I guess I haven't really had a moment to really think about the time".

Of course, Miguel's situation was different then most people's. A lot of people at the resort had lives back where they came from but not Miguel. His life generally consisted in being locked into a very small, windowless room so anywhere was better to him. "What about you Katara?" he asked, like the way her name sounded. It was a very unique name that made Miguel wonder if she was from a different country or world. She did have that exotic air to her. "How long have you been here for?"

While she was answering Miguel tried very hard to keep his eyes on her face but after a moments realized it wasn't that hard. She had beautiful face with startling blue eyes that reminded Miguel of water and her golden-brown skin looked so smooth-- Miguel blinked when he realized his hand had started to move up and stopped himself before it went above his waist. To her it might have looked like a weird gesture but Miguel's hand had been unconsciously reaching up to touch her face.

What the hell is wrong with me? the Latino wondered, feeling slightly panicked. Katara seemed to be the only thing he could focus on and he had this overwhelming urge to touch her. Not in necessarily a sexual fashion but simply to cur her face with his hand, to see if her skin was as soft as it looked.

Miguel wouldn't do that though. He was not the type to grab strange girls so he wretched his eyes away from Katara and stared at the water. "How do you do that stuff? Water-bend I mean.", he asked quickly to keep the conversation going.

Katara felt a surge of pride at Miguel’s awe of her waterbending. In a way, it was nice knowing she was the only one with the gift for it here. It gave her a reason to show off a bit. His flattery over her waterbending was definitely something she could get used to hearing. Then again, it would be nice to have someone with whom to practice waterbending. She pushed the thought from her mind as he answered her question.

“I’ve been here six days. We might have arrived her on the same day.” Although Miguel stated the activities had distracted him from counting the time, Katara actually used those to help mark her days. She didn’t want to forget how long she had been here, though she couldn’t truly explain why it was so important to her to keep track of the time.

Eyes trained in observation noticed the man’s hand lift, but quickly dropped it. Her brows creased together for a moment, as she wondered if the movement was a nervous habit, or something else. It almost looked as if he’d had a difficult time of lowering his hand, but she wouldn’t jump to any major conclusions. She was about to ask him if he was all right, but he asked her about her waterbending before she could do so.

“The former princess of the Northern Water Tribe told me that the first waterbenders watched how the moon pushed and pulled the tides of the ocean and learned how to do it themselves. We use our flow of chi to move our bodies in pushes and pulls the water around. When I first started I couldn’t do much more than streaming the water and pushing and pulling small amounts to create tiny waves. I’ve reached a Master level within a matter of weeks once I found another Master to teach me. I’ve been working to hone and perfect my bending for years.” She hoped her explanation was understandable. Katara had never had to really explain it like that before. It had been a lot easier to teach Aang because he already basically knew what it was. On this Planet, she was among people who had never even heard about any kind of elemental bending.

“What about you? It’s obvious that you can’t bend elements, or you’d have known more about waterbending, but what kinds of talents did you have in your world?”

Hearing Katara explain where water-bending had come from was interesting but it didn’t distract Miguel from his attraction to the young woman like he had hoped. Her voice was just as lovely as the rest of her and Miguel couldn’t help but smile somewhat foolishly as she described how she had learned water bending and improved her technique over the years. When Katara asked Miguel about his own talents it took the Latino a moment to realize she had even asked him a question. “¿Qué? OH! Sorry….my talent?”

Miguel’s brow furrowed as he tried to think of one. A talent he’d be willing to admit to Katara but his mind managed to work and Miguel relaxed when an answer came to him. “I’m pretty good with animals, like training them. I was part of a program to train Seeing Eye dogs for the blind and I did a good job of it. My…uh…boss McManus was impressed anyway since I trained the dog in two languages”. Actually McManus was the unit head for the prison Miguel had been in but he wasn’t ready to admit that part about just yet. “I’m also a pretty good boxer too but I dunno, hitting people ain’t exactly a talent, is it?” he laughed.

Miguel wasn’t surprised to hear that Katara was from another world since it seemed like almost everyone he met here so far was from a different world or time than him. Even if they were from the same planet and nearly the same time, like John or Rose, then it turned out that they had been space or time traveled. Simply put, the things Miguel had once assumed were impossible were clearly possible here. Like a woman controlling water.

“I imagine you must miss your home very much”, he said sympathetically. “Was it anything like this place?” Miguel continued, glancing around the lake and surrounding land.

Katara looked at Miguel as she asked her question, wondering if something was a bit wrong with him. He looked dazed to say the least. Why was he looking at her like that? When he suddenly seemed to come back to himself, his eyes cleared a bit. Then he explained something he did in his own world. “Seeing eye dogs? Are those sort of like dogs that lead blind people around?” The only blind person Katara had ever really known was Toph, but the blind earthbender hadn’t needed any guide other than her bare feet to lead her around, but it was common knowledge that most of the blind couldn’t see the way the younger girl could. The waterbender felt a newfound respect settling in her mind about the man before her. “I admire that you were helping people who needed it when you were in your home world.”

The Water Tribe femme thought for a second before speaking. “If you do it well, hitting people could be considered a talent. I hit people with water sometimes, and I have enough control that I’m really good at it.” Katara said consolingly, a smile on her lips. She found she liked his laugh. Laughter was a good way to keep everyone’s moods light.

The smile faded, though, at the mention of missing her home. “Yeah. I really do. It wasn’t anything like this place. The only thing that’s even remotely the same is my room, but that’s because I chose for it to look that way. I mean, this place has things that make life a lot more convenient, but I miss having to earn what I get. Most of all, I miss my family and my friends. I was doing so much good where I was, helping people in the Earth Kingdom recover from the war. I feel completely useless here. That’s why I’ve been trying to figure out how to get back there.”

Katara took a deep breath. “I bet you miss your home, too. Maybe we could find a way off this rock together?” She suggested, immediately assuming that anyone brought here would not wish to stay.

Wow. She is just so amazing, Miguel mused as Katara told him of her own world. Working for what she needed, helping out people recovering from a war...Katara was just so down to earth. A far better person that Miguel was since he's usual way of living was to look out for himself and take what he could. Standing next to such a good person made the prisoner feel inwardly ashamed of himself. Besides training those dogs, what good had he ever done in his world?

Miguel couldn't stop himself from snorting with laughter when she said he must miss his home too. "Not really. My life back home ain't worth going back to, believe me", he explained. "But, if you're looking for help to get back to your world then I'd be glad to help you". Miguel sincerely meant that but of course, if Katara had asked him to jump off a cliff at that moment he might have promised to do that too. At that moment he would have promised to do anything she asked.

"Course, I don't really know much about getting off of other planets", the Latino admitted. "But whatever I can do, you know?" After a moment's thought he remembered Temperance. "I met this woman yesterday who was really interested in getting back to her world. Name's Temperance and she's pretty smart. Had a whole lab in her room so maybe she could help".

Katara looked at him with surprise. How could one’s former life not be worth returning? He must have really had it bad if he felt that way, but then there were people in her world who would have gladly switched places with the waterbender to leave their old lives to enter this one. “Aren’t there people that will miss you, or at least people you miss?” She couldn’t imagine having no one to whom she could go back.

“You would really do that? What if you help a successful escape, and the Planet punishes you for it? I don’t know if it would do that, but it’s not impossible. I wouldn’t want you to get into trouble if you really want to stay here.” Katara could use all the help she could possibly get, but not at another’s expense. This man was truly a nice guy, and she knew that whatever his past had been it couldn’t have followed him to this place. If life had been so terrible for him in his home world, it would be much better henceforth. The waterbender couldn’t see things getting better for herself without her family and friends, though.

“Temperance?” If another person was genuinely trying to find a way out, then it wouldn’t hurt to find her. “That could be really helpful. Thank you, Miguel.” A smile lit her features as she placed a hand on his arm. Maybe Katara could find the woman later. She was sure the Planet’s golems would show her where the woman was if she asked them- unless of course the Planet really didn’t want a gathering of plotters. It was ridiculous of course. If the golems wouldn’t help her, then she would just find the woman on her own. Now wasn’t the time for that, though.

Katara suddenly remembered she was standing around in her underwear. “So, um… I’m going to go put my clothes back on. I’ll be right back.” She wasn’t embarrassed about it. It’s not like her underwear was revealing. It was just a good idea to put her outerwear back in place. The waterbender quickly removed herself to the spot where she’d left her clothing, and, after replacing it on her person, she jogged back to Miguel.

“Have you found anything interesting while you’ve been here?” She asked in an attempt to keep the small talk going.

"No", Miguel simply admitted. "No one would miss me and I wouldn't miss any of them". The sad thing was he really meant it. Miguel barely saw his mother or his other family, his girlfriend had stopped calling and visiting, and even while his father was in the same prison as Miguel, the Latino barely knew the man and would never really get to know him since his father couldn't talk anymore. He was completely alone.

"Yeah, of course I would!" He promised Katara. "Just 'cause I wanna stay here doesn't mean the rest of you should be stuck here too". He was glad to hear his suggestion about finding Temperance was helpful and grinned widely. "You're welcome Katara", he replied, once more enjoying the sound of her name. When she said she had to go change her clothes, Miguel was slightly disappointed. Not because she was wearing anything particularly revealing but because it meant he had to be a few moments without Katara.

At this point he was convinced he never wanted to be without her again. The seriousness of that thought was enough to wake Miguel up a bit from his stupor. One minute he met a chick and the next he was thinking about proposing? What the fuck was wrong with him? His head seemed to clear those few moments he was separated from Katara but once he saw her again in her red clothes, the feelings returned.

"You look beautiful", he stated simply before answering her question. "Interesting? Uh...the activities I guess. The people are pretty interesting too. Seems like everyone's from a different world, time or reality. It's kinda amazing. So far I've met a cavewoman, a time-traveler, a time lord, and some astronaut. What about you?"

Katara felt a wave of sadness rush over her as Miguel admitted he really wouldn’t be missed by anyone in his home, and he wouldn’t really miss anyone else. She couldn’t imagine not having anyone who would worry about her, or anyone about whom she would worry. What kind of life must he have led that would be so devoid of compassion and love? The compassionate, motherly part of her wanted to comfort him and make him feel like someone really cared, but she didn’t even know him. The waterbender had only just met this man, so what could she really have to offer him in that area? She placed a hand on his arm. “I hope you find someone here who also wants to stay that you can truly say you would miss if they left, and vice versa.” She said with a small smile.

“I imagine it would get a little boring here if you were the only one left after helping the others escape, but I bet if you want to stay here you aren’t alone in that desire.” Katara couldn’t bring herself to argue with him about helping her escape right now. If he thought he really wanted to risk himself by helping, that was his problem. How many times had she and Sokka stuck by Aang’s side when he said he wanted to do dangerous things alone? Who was she to play the role of a hypocrite and deny him?

When she returned to his side after reclothing herself, a light blush rose to her cheeks at his comment. “Thank you.” Katara spoke a bit bashfully. How could anyone not miss such a sweet person? It was so strange to her.

It occurred to the young woman that others had been involved in activities, though she probably should have realized it sooner. Were all people here supposed to do different activities? “Me? Let’s see… I was greeted by a boy who seemed really nice. During the activities I had to bowl with a singer, a writer, an incredibly strong boy, and an aspiring healer… er… doctor who I met again the following day. I met a man who told me he’s an effective gambler, and a warrior woman who trained me a little on using a staff. What did you do for the activity day?”

After he told her Katara thought a moment. “I just realized that I really haven’t explored around outside, and I’ve been here almost a week. I mostly just perused the main building inside. Have you been around outside much? Would you like to go exploring with me out here?”

"We went fishing down by the lake. That's when I met the Doctor, Ayla and John. The time lord, cavewoman and astronaut", Miguel explained. "It was great, I'd never been fishing before but I never caught anything. I might try again later on". He was grinning the whole time he said this with a boyish air about him as he told Katara about the fishing. "You should have seen Ayla. She caught two fish with her bare hands!"

Katara then mentioned that she hadn't explored the outside of the ranch very much, Miguel listened attentively. "I've tried to but I ran into Temperance. She had just arrived so I couldn't really desert her to go exploring, you know? So yeah, I'd love to look around now if you want", he finished with a glance around the lake, the meadows and the forest off in the distance. "Aside from the lake, the only place I've really been around outside is the stables. What about you? Where would you like to go Katara?"

As Miguel waited for her to answer he shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans. For another brief moment he had the urge to reach out and touch her, an urge that had startled him a little. To prevent himself from doing something that stupid again he decided to keep his hands in his pockets and to keep talking. Anything to try and distract himself from Katara's glowing beauty.

"So...um...got any brothers or sisters?" he asked lamely.

“That sounds like a lot of fun. What’s a time lord, or an astronaut?” Katara had never heard those terms before. His demeanor made her smile, though. He seemed happier than when he talked about having no one back home, and she knew that perhaps this place really would be good for him. After all, anyone could turn over a new leaf if they were determined to make the effort. Whatever happened in his life before the Mirage was the past, and this was the present. “She caught a fish with her bare hand?” She repeated as a question with awe before an amused grin lit her lips. That was too good. Her brother used to hardly be able to catch a fish at all, and here this woman could catch them easily with her hands. “I’ve caught fish with my waterbending before.” It wasn’t often that she did that, though it was a bit fun.

“Yeah, I get it.” She replied. He really was a good guy, better than she suspected he might think himself. A new environment really gave people a chance to start over and to change themselves. I’ve really only been around the buildings, the lake, and the stables, too. I haven’t really explored anything over there.” Katara said as she swept her arm around to indicate the meadow, mountains, and wooded area. “Let’s go explore the meadow area. It looks like a nice place to start.” She placed her hand on his elbow after his hands disappeared into his pockets and tugged lightly to get him walking beside her before dropping her hands to her side.

“Yeah. I have a brother who’s a year older than me. His name is Sokka. He’s the warrior and idea guy. He’s so much like our father. He’s married to a great woman- Suki. What about you? I know you said that there’s no one from your world, but was there at least any sort of family for you at one point in your life?” Katara was genuinely concerned about this as they walked. She knew how hard it was for her when her mom died, and when her father had to leave to fight in the war.

"A warrior eh? That's quite a job description", Miguel commented as the pair started walking toward the meadows. When Katara asked him about his family, Miguel's smile faltered. "I...yeah, I had a family. My mom and my younger sister Anna are back in New York and my dad...well, Eduardo went to prison when Anna was a baby and I was just a kid so I never really got to know him. By the time I got old enough to see him again he's tongue had been cut out by another prisoner so--" Miguel broke off, realizing he probably been giving Katara too many gory details and if he wasn't careful he would betray his own background with the prison system.

"So I didn't really get to talk to him", the Latino finished. Maybe he shouldn't have brought up the subject of family as just thinking about his own was kind of depressing. Instead Miguel forced himself to focus on the beautiful landscape and his compelling company. "I've never been out around this area of the resort before", he said with forced lightheartedness. "It's nice". Nice? You're an idiot, Miguel inwardly swore at himself for sounding so lame. "I mean, it's so nice compared to the city I'm from", he added.

"What about you Katara?" Miguel turned his brown eyes on the woman. "You said this place wasn't like your home but what's it like where you're from? Are you a city girl or small town gal?"

“Yeah. I guess in comparison to other jobs it is. It just seemed… normal in our family, though. I mean, my father is a great warrior, and I used my waterbending to fight, too, though I’ve never been in any sort of army.” When Katara heard Miguel speak of his own family, she paled a little. Perhaps the torment his family went through reflected on him too much, and that’s why he turned out without anyone really caring about him and without anyone for whom he really cared.

“That had to be difficult, growing up like that. My mom died when I was little, and my dad left to fight in the war when I was twelve. He was held as a war prisoner when I was fourteen, but my brother broke him out within a couple of days of his arrival. Nothing bad happened to him while he was in there, though.” Katara could see Miguel’s mood deteriorating, so she was glad when he changed the subject. As long as something kept his mind off the bad things, he might be okay.

“I haven’t been out here, either. I agree, though. It’s really nice. It’s beautiful.” She thought a moment when he asked his questions. “Um… I’m from the South Pole originally, so it’s completely covered in ice and snow. The Southern Water Tribe would be considered a small town, a village. It’s bigger than it was four years ago, but it’s still no where near as big as the Northern Water Tribe. Up there, in the North Pole, the Chief is royalty. My father is the Chief of the Southern Water Tribe. We’re peasants in comparison, but I don’t mind it. I love it there.

“I’ve been to big cities, though. The largest city in the world is Ba Sing Se, and I went there to help the effort to end the war. I didn’t like it very much, though. It’s so different. There were walls to separate the poor from the rich, and walls to separate the city from the rest of the world. It was dirty and not at all what I expected.” Crisp blue eyes caught the older man’s darker gaze. “Was your city anything like that?”

Miguel let out a low whistle. "The south pole? Wow, that is quite a change from here". The idea of living in a land of ice and snow boggled Miguel's mind but it made Katara seem all the more exotic and interesting. When she described her experience with cities, Miguel nodded in agreement. "Yeah, cities aren't the cleanest places and New York is pretty much that way except people aren't separated by walls but there's definitely that division between the rich crowd and the poor people. I kinda of belong to the latter", he admitted. "My old neighborhood ain't exactly what you'd call high class but there's good people there. Family oriented, you know? Maybe too many gangs though", he added.

"But yeah, the rich live on their side of the city and poor live on their's. Sad to say most cities in the world are like that. That's kinda what I like about this place though". Miguel took his hands out of his pockets and let one lightly graze against the tall grass of the meadow. "It's like everyone from anywhere can be here and kinda live together, you know? I mean, we're all from different backgrounds and worlds but it doesn't matter. We're all kinda in the same boat".

The edge of the forest contrasted beautifully with the mountains as Miguel stared off contently across the meadow. For a few moments he simply said nothing and enjoyed the silence between them. "All things considered, there are worse places to be trapped in".

“Well, yeah, it is, but I wasn’t in the South Pole when I was taken here. I was in the Fire Nation. It’s climate is a lot warmer. “I know what you mean, though. Compared to the royalty in the Northern Water Tribe in the North Pole, those in the South Pole are peasants, but we’re all really close and family oriented, too. We don’t have gangs, though.” The idea of gangs in the South Pole was laughable, but it was true that there were gangs in the Earth Kingdom, and maybe even some in the Fire Nation. They weren’t exactly fun to deal with, but Katara had never had a real problem with them.

The waterbender smiled as Miguel spoke of this place being nice because everyone from anywhere could get along here. Money wasn’t an issue any longer, so there was no reason why anyone should have to flaunt it. It didn’t matter how rich or poor a person was before coming here, they were all on the same level from the get-go, except for the experiences they’d had before coming. This place was good for a clean slate if that’s what someone wanted. “I completely understand what you mean. It is really great in that aspect.”

The meadow grass swished gently around her legs as they walked, making a pleasing sound. This entire area was gorgeous, though in a different way that places in her home world had been. When he made his comment after a moment of silence, Katara’s silver gaze moved to his face. “I suppose you’re right. We could be locked in metal boxes and fed only sparingly or something along those lines. It would be a much worse fate than this.”

Miguel’s brow wrinkled at the mention of metal boxes, something that was all too familiar to him and he had to wonder if Katara had somehow picked up on that. Had he let something slip? That was the worst thing about keeping a secret. When you had a secret you were paranoid that somehow someone was going to find out. Miguel silently assured himself that it was just an innocent statement but he was still a little on edge now. Be more careful in what you’re saying, he silently reminded himself.

“Yeah, that would be hell”, was all Miguel said out loud. He was anxious to move away from the subject of boxes and prisons and looked around for a distraction. Luckily the planet handed him one. “Hey, look at that!” Miguel said in a low, excited tone as he pointed across the field. Just off by the trees was a white-tailed deer feeding off the meadow grass. It was the first time Miguel had seen any other signs of life outside of the guests and the golems but also the first time he had ever seen a deer in real life.

Immediately Miguel wondered how close they would be able to get and took a careful step forward. “I didn’t know this place had deer”, he murmured to Katara in a soft voice. “Think they’re tame?” The horses had been tame but horses were a lot different from deer. Besides the horses were in the stables while the deer were running around free. More than likely it was a wild animal but Katara and Miguel would learn that it wasn’t alone as a larger, clearly older deer came out through the trees.

“Have you ever seen deer before?” he asked as the deer moved closer to them.

Katara didn’t notice his brow rose because she was looking around the area. It was so beautiful. Her statement had had nothing to do with something she might have picked up from him because she still hadn’t the slightest idea he’d been in prison. The waterbender had more-or-less been thinking about the metal cells in the Earth Kingdom that prevented earthbenders from escaping- unless of course the bender was Toph who could bend metal. A small shudder went through her lithe frame at the thought of being kept in one of those prisons.

Silvery-sapphire eyes had begun perusing the flowers of the meadow when she heard Miguel speak and noticed he pointed toward the far end of the field. The creature who grazed there was beautiful, the epitome of grace. Katara was just about to ask what sort of animal it was when the man spoke again, answering her unspoken question. “I don’t know. It depends on whether or not they’re used to humans, or at least trusting of other species.” The waterbender began slowly approaching the deer. She stopped when she noted the elder deer with the smaller one.

“No. The closest thing to a deer I’ve ever seen was a saber-tooth moose-lion, but those are a lot bigger than these.” The deer began to move nearer to the humans, much to Katara’s delight. She, too, took small, slow steps to get closer, until she was only an arm’s length away. Slowly, her hand moved up to hover in front of the younger deer’s nose. It sniffed her fingers for a moment, but it didn’t move away, so the Water Tribe femme took the liberty of lightly touching it’s muzzle. The fur was soft.

She had always been really good with animals, even as a child. Then when Aang came along she’d bonded first with Appa then with Momo. It was just a gift she had, or maybe she just naturally put off a good vibe that allowed animals to trust her.
