Hearing Katara explain where water-bending had come from was interesting but it didn’t distract Miguel from his attraction to the young woman like he had hoped. Her voice was just as lovely as the rest of her and Miguel couldn’t help but smile somewhat foolishly as she described how she had learned water bending and improved her technique over the years. When Katara asked Miguel about his own talents it took the Latino a moment to realize she had even asked him a question. “¿Qué? OH! Sorry….my talent?”
Miguel’s brow furrowed as he tried to think of one. A talent he’d be willing to admit to Katara but his mind managed to work and Miguel relaxed when an answer came to him. “I’m pretty good with animals, like training them. I was part of a program to train Seeing Eye dogs for the blind and I did a good job of it. My…uh…boss McManus was impressed anyway since I trained the dog in two languages”. Actually McManus was the unit head for the prison Miguel had been in but he wasn’t ready to admit that part about just yet. “I’m also a pretty good boxer too but I dunno, hitting people ain’t exactly a talent, is it?” he laughed.
Miguel wasn’t surprised to hear that Katara was from another world since it seemed like almost everyone he met here so far was from a different world or time than him. Even if they were from the same planet and nearly the same time, like John or Rose, then it turned out that they had been space or time traveled. Simply put, the things Miguel had once assumed were impossible were clearly possible here. Like a woman controlling water.
“I imagine you must miss your home very much”, he said sympathetically. “Was it anything like this place?” Miguel continued, glancing around the lake and surrounding land.
