Good Ending/Bad Ending meme
Do you get a happily ever after? Or a 'Rocks fall, everyone dies'? Why not both?

* Post your characters and set up two scenes. One with an ideal setting (They got what they always wanted, hit it big, became rich and famous, etc.) and one with a bad twist of events (They're homeless, everyone hates them, maybe they're even dying!).
* Others respond to one of the two settings (Or both in different comments, if they want!)
* Respond.
* ???
* Profit!!!

Just remember: no ending is set in stone, good endings can turn sour, and bad endings can be made better. Just see where it takes you and enjoy the ride!

He took the tunic in hand. It was a bit of a struggle to put it on since it hurt like hell to raise his arms, but he didn't make a sound to indicate his discomfort. "Well, I suppose I will have to make do with this, but really, I'd expect better. I've gotten accustomed to the high living standards here, you know."

He eyed her bundle with muted curiosity. It didn't feel real, that he was getting saved. It was entirely possible he was hallucinating this. "I have no way to keep time here, mademoiselle. They're finished with me for now and won't come back until they think I can survive another lashing, if that helps at all."

"Then we'll simply have to move quickly." She said, giving a short nod. And move quickly she did, finishing unwrapping the bundle, nudging him gently out of the way so that she could shake ashes out of a waterskin, nudging them here and there into a roughly human silhouette.

That done, she dusted her hands, rolling the oilcloth back up and tucking it back down into the drain, replacing the grate once she'd done so, "We've been working on getting your lot out of here for the past few days, slow going, and we've lost more than we should have." Her voice was quiet, tone conversational as she worked a lockpick out of the end of her braid, setting to work on the lock to his cell as she did so, "You're one of the last still here, we shouldn't have to make another run tomorrow."

He was about to say something grateful--I'm forever in your debt, thank you, I'll do everything in my power to see them avenged--but the words catch in his throat when he realizes...

"There were other survivors?"

That was all that was in him. No feeling. No thought.

Just one niggling hope: that some of his people had really gotten out alive.

"A few." She replied, "No more than a handful, those that made it out of the fire, or were elsewhere at the time." And not all of them had survived Justice as well as he had, though the ones that had were being spirited away the same as he was. This was a concentrated, cooperative effort, something that had been planned and re-planned until they knew they could do it without getting caught.

He couldn't formulate a response. He barely had the strength to remain in a sitting position; he couldn't process this. He couldn't dredge up his broken hopes at the idea that there were even a few left.

"I..."

He couldn't. He couldn't say anything. He was too tired, and he was too weak.

"Your highness, you have to stay with me." She said, tone gone just a little sharp, "You won't be any good to the ones that are left if you don't stay together starting now. Do you understand me?"

She herself was only half gypsy, on her mother's side, but she had the same fire to her that her mother's people were, she wasn't about to let him slip away, not now.

"Yes. Of course." He scrubbed his face with his hands, forcing his mind back into motion. Escape. That's all he can think about right now. Escape. "Yes. Tell me when you have the lock picked and I'll follow." He'd make himself follow, even if his legs collapsed under him.

... 'her mother's people were -known for-', use all the words next time, self.

"It's open." She said, tucking the pick back into the end of her braid where she'd first gotten it from, "Follow where I step, quiet as church mice and we just might make it out of this in one piece. Ready?"

He needed to take a second to gather his strength. One final dash. As battered and abused as he was, he could take one final dash. He could collapse when they were safe.

He took a deep breath, grasping one of the bars to his prison and pulling himself up. His body trembled and shrieked for him to just let it lie, but he refused to acknowledge it. "As ready as I'll ever be. Lead the way, ma mie."

Luckily it wasn't a long walk to where they were going, side door, back corridor, a couple short steps and they were at the edge of what amounted to a sewer under the palace, though it was a wide drainage river, and there were three small boats tied at the base of the steps.

She cursed softly, shaking her head, jaw set, "We have to go." There weren't supposed to be any others, it seemed, but she offered him a hand all the same, "After you."

He eyed the boats suspiciously, but he didn't have the strength to question her too thoroughly. He'd just have to have faith that she knew what was happening.

He took the hand, a tiny part of him reluctant to admit that he needed it, and went on. "Would I be wrong to hope that those are friendly, mademoiselle?"

"You wouldn't be wrong at all." She said, clambering into the boat herself, casting off the mooring rope with an easy flick of her arm, "It's simply that they aren't supposed to be here, we were meant to be the last ones out." She wasn't going to hope they were early, but she also wasn't going to let herself dread for those who were late, she couldn't, not yet.

He understood the implications. He nodded grimly, glancing back to where they came from briefly before climbing into the boat. There was nothing he could do about it, not like he was now.

And there was nothing he could say for it. "Where are you taking me?"

He trusted that his ally had a plan in mind, but he wanted to know what that plan was.

"You have your Court, we have ours." She replied, keeping her voice low, just audible over the water against the boat's sides, it was a few long minutes before she spoke again, now that the risk of being overheard had passed, "You will be our guests until you're able to rebuild or relocate."

"We can't thank you enough." He slumped over just a little--he was too proud to completely collapse, but by God, he was exhausted. Food, water, medical attention, and sleep. He needed it all. "Bah... my apologies, but my conversation isn't as sparkling as usual. I promise to make up for it later, mademoiselle." He gave a wry smile and a playful wink; even at his weakest, he found the time to joke.

"I'll hold you to that, your highness." She replied, a flicker of a smile echoing his. She couldn't help it, really.

She was content to let him rest, it would be a while until they'd gotten to where they were going anyway, the Palace of Justice's drainage river fed into the actual river somewhere along the way, and no one was going to notice their small skiff at this hour.

It was another hour, nearer to two before she caught the mooring rope again, swinging it like a lasso, catching a dock at the back of what appeared to be a mill, if the waterwheel was anything to go by, "We've arrived."

He had fallen asleep sitting at some point during the ride, his body finally shutting down, but he snapped awake when she spoke, his entire body stiffening up a little.

He looked up, then forced his weary legs to move once more, one hand grasping the side of the boat so he could stay mostly straight. "Excellent. Care to share how many people I might see at this party?" He wondered if this was the headquarters or an outpost of sorts. Either way, he wouldn't be able to do much to thank his people's saviors until he had gotten some medical attention.

"A fair few, I suspect." She replied, swinging herself easily up out of the boat and onto the short dock to offer him a hand up.

The building was, in fact, a tailor's shop, the waterwheel was mostly decoration, but also used to hide the noise from the basement, as it was often where the Guild held their meetings.

The shop itself was dark, but she led him down a narrow staircase to the room below. It was, as she'd said, a guildhall, and aside from the scattering of Assassins there, there were also the few remaining gypsies, more than a dozen, but less than twenty at the moment. She tilted her head towards the tidiest of the tables, where healer's supplies had been set out, "Will you let me tend to you?"

Of course, Clopin wanted to immediately go to his people, to comfort and guide them as a leader should, but the wave of emotion made him wobble on his feet. He had to grasp the edge of a nearby table to actually avoid outright collapsing, which he really didn't want to do in front of people.

So he looked to his savior, giving a small nod. "Oui. Merci, mademoiselle. I'll warn you now that your work is cut out for you." The people of the Palace of Justice had pulled no punches for the gypsy king.

"Just the way I like it." She said, hooking a foot around one of the stools at the table, tugging it out to where he could sit and she could see the damage, "Have a seat, let me see what I've got to work with."

He sat down obediently, chuckling softly. "Like a challenge, eh? Good. That's useful in this line of work, as I'm sure you've noticed."

He peeled the tunic off, the cloth sticking uncomfortably to the dried blood on his back. He really was a mess. Bruises in various stages of newness blotched and discolored his sides and abdomen (he probably had bruised or cracked ribs), the motions he made with his right arm were stiff from a poorly relocated shoulder, and upon close inspection, it was obvious that some of the older lashes on his back had become infected. He hadn't noticed, but he was running a nasty fever from the infection. It'd take time for him to heal from all this.

"Well..." A pause as she surveyed the damage even before getting a cloth out of the kettle of water near the fire, "I'll say this much: it could be worse." She shrugged, working efficiently and quickly, but as gently as she could manage while still getting everything cleaned properly, "Could definitely be worse."

A flicker of a smile, inspecting the deepest of the lashes, debating stitches versus just a swath of bandage, knowing that if she went for stitches, and the infection spread, the swelling would probably rip them right out again and that would just make things worse, "Now I know, trusting your well-being to someone who's skill set lies more in ending lives than preserving them may seem counterintuitive, but we're good at putting people back together again."

He bit back a hiss of pain, but he could give a small grim smile. "You need to know how a body works before you can kill it efficiently. I think I'm in good hands." He winced, digging his nails into his palms to distract from the pain. "I've always hated this part."

"Never been my favorite either." She said with a soft laugh, going over the worst of the injuries again, "There's infection," She said finally, "Near the shoulder, but it's not deep, hasn't gotten into the bone, so you should be alright, with time."

She'd already set the cloth aside, snagging one of the boxes on the table and popping it open, "Drawing salve." She explained, daubing it gently against the infected marks, and those around it, just to be on the safe side, "Probably going to sting like hell, but that's how you know it's working."

He hissed, digging his nails further into his filthy palms. "It's working."

Clopin bit back another hiss, biting his tongue. "Infection? Ah, another gift from the oh so honorable judge." That would explain why he felt feverish. And there he thought that was just from not eating or drinking.
