Tony had absolutely no concept of time. Hours passed. Hunger came and went. But none of it mattered. To him, there was only the work before him. Often in his workshop back in Malibu, he could lose whole days working on his latest project. Without some outside individual checking on him now and again, it was probable that he could entirely lose himself in what he was doing, and this was different only in that Tony was working even faster and harder than he ever had, motivated by the fear of potential loss and other emotions he had not allowed to surface. For this was no mere addition or upgrade to his armor, but Pepper.
And he would never forgive himself if he lost her now.
To that end, he had spent many of the past hours designing, and piecing together a generator with his hands and what other tools he had nearby, as he lacked the utilities at his present location to simply machine them together. To the untrained eye, the device looked like some sort of sophisticated wireless modem, with the exception of the wires that ran from it, to a chest piece over Pepper's wound that was more or less an updated version of the original build Yinsen rigged together in Afghanistan. It did not look like much, but it was powering magnets that were doing their job of holding the shrapnel in place.
Wiping at his brow, Tony shifted to look over Pepper, who was laying on a bed before him, to Hank. The mutant he had spat hate at not twenty four hours ago. It was fortunate for Tony, who was not a medical doctor by any means, to have Hank so close to the incident and willing to help, even after everything that went down. Tony could still hardly believe how gracious Hank had been, even if it was all really just for Pepper, their mutual friend. Whatever the case, he knew he could not have saved her life without him.
"I owe you an apology", Tony said, when he was finally felt safe enough to divert some of his attention from Pepper now that the device was in place and working. "I was a real asshole before. You're a good man, and without you..."
He could not quite finish the words, but he knew Hank would well know the rest.
"...Anyway, I'm sorry. I am sorry, and I am deeply in your debt for this. If there is anything, and I mean anything I can ever do to repay you, all you have to do is ask."
