Moon
The last day of Ramadan is judged on the sighting of the first sliver of the waxing crescent. Then, it is Eid al-Fitr.

Something about that always gave me strength to know the moon will grow big again in times of darkness and fasting.

It is interesting Seneca also took comfort in the moon like this

Anyways, just wanted to give some holiday words of wisdom and encouragement!

[Private to Faihan]

How are you? It's been quiet.

[Private to James]

So about the recent theft...

Just waiting/hoping for things to blow over entirely.

Thinking about past mistakes.

The usual.

You?

Thank you for the well wishes.

What past mistakes? Past mistakes or /past/ mistakes?

Well, I used the holiday to figure out where I should go from here -- and decided I would have to pause my desire for a quiet simple life for now.

And explain blow over to me?

Is everything okay?

Past-past mistakes. I keep thinking about several things Badr might have done that could probably have made things better. Hindsight and all.

Everything is fineโ€”thanks to my shiny connections. But on that note, I have something I want to show you, though, when you do have time to drop by. We unearthed some bizarre data. It's a read, but I think you'll find it interesting.

Ah yes. Letting hindsight make you feel guilty is never fun. :\

You really have become quite the social butterfly as of late.

Some bizarre data? How so? Now you got me curious. Never tempt a scientist with data. :P

I hope you like the concept of the "multiverse."

Even though it may seem like a lot is going on and you have taken on this leadership role, I am so proud of the growth you have made not just in the last year, but since I've known you. I would be very proud to call you my son.

Multiverse? Well, I have played all the Chrono games and early Final Fantasy. So I know it from that perspective.

Scientifically, multiverse seems more in a physicist's wheelhouse.

But I'm willing to take a look at anything at this point.

Kaveh...that's really...

Thank you. I don't know what to say...

I hope you know...that I've always felt the same.

It makes things certainly more complicated, but it might be what we're looking at. What it means for us...well, maybe you'll have some ideas. One of the magitech science kids of yore took a look at something for me, and this is his write up of everything he learned. The gist of it is that all the data from that time periodโ€”the period we rememberโ€”is showing as three possibilities at the same time, so that's definitely complicated.

I mean it. With all my heart.

This is all not any stranger than me being able to do magic.

Are the three possibilities here or there or a combo of both? Was this because someone tried to time travel? Maybe I should just read it and ask questions later.

To my knowledge [...] time travel is still implausible, if not impossible. But it seems that [...] there is a possibility that somehow, what happened in Elysium [...] is not yet an absolute reality. But what that means for usโ€”what that means at allโ€”I don't know.

I wish I were friends with the Physicists.

And they had Elysium selves.

But hmmm... I wonder if this means that ourselves here could be snapped back there if things are theoretically fixed.

I do know some of the professors in that department from classes. I'm not sure I feel comfortable following that lead, or that it would be particularly useful without an additional understanding of magic...

I don't know if we could or couldn't.

I do know that a gate to Elysium is in the underwater ruins here in Mar Luna.

Yeah, you also don't want to deal with physicists. Believe me. They think geology is easy so not really a science but ...

I'll try to dust off my physics notes to see if I can refresh my memory -- I only took a few classes back in the day -- but it couldn't hurt.

There is a gate to Elysium in the underwater ruins?

Have you spoken to James? This seems up her alley

They're not that bad. I mean, I didn't leave school because I hated those sciences or anything.

Yeah, she says she is going to ask around with the local fisherman who might know where those relics were found in the first place. There might be bribes required, though. Whether it's whiskey or cash, I'm still not certain.

I'm Persian but the moon is important in the Middle East/Islam in part because we follow a lunar calendar. The less religious reason is a lot of the Middle East is desert so people traditionally traveled at night by the light of the moon.

What kind of poetry do you like?

It may be cliche, but I really like Rumi.

"Some nights stay up till dawn,
as the moon sometimes does for the sun.
Be a full bucket pulled up the dark way
of a well, then lifted out into light."

I'm not that into it, but there are times it will catch my eye, or I have a craving for it.

For a short time, I had a girlfriend who was a fan of Meira Delmar, and that rubbed off somewhat. She was one of the only ones that lasted very long. An independent woman, but two overly independent people sometimes struggle to stay in the same space for long.

Why Rumi?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

I am not familiar with Meira Delmar. Perhaps I should check her out.

It is sort of amazing how people through the exchange of ideas with people we hold dear, if only for a moment rub off on us in subtle ways.

Do you miss her? Your ex-girlfriend I mean.

Why Rumi? Well, I loved the imagery he uses in his poems and also he wrote often on themes of love and forgiveness. I found it uplifting. There is one line of his poems that talks about love reaching everyone no matter what they believe.

People are always leaving things behind. Often things we can't even see. But no, I don't really miss her. I prefer to be single. I suppose I am atypical for "my kind" that way...

Is that what you believe? That anyone can be reached given the opportunity?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]khastenabashee
2022-05-05 03:28 pm UTC (link)
Some people like it that way and no one should feel judgment against them for it.

It is more that I want to believe everyone is good and can be reached and the world is mostly filled with love. Even if there is evidence to the contrary. Sometimes, it uplifts me to think of the world as in possibilities than realities.

What about you?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]trasnochar
2022-05-05 04:38 pm UTC (link)
I've always been a realist, I suppose. Then and now. The idea of a better world is nice, but I would prefer to focus on what I can make good for myself here and now, since that is, after all, the only thing I can control.

I didn't know you were such a dreamer, Professor. Was Seneca secretly an idealist?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]khastenabashee

I'm a cautious optimist, I would say.

Seneca is the origin story of every cynic -- once an idealist until they met the world he let it break him down.

What about Yrsa?

[info]trasnochar

I suppose you have managed to avoid the breaking down in this life. That's good.

Yrsa and I are of one mind. Be realistic. But don't accept the bare minimum. Take what you can from life, because it's too short to be demure.
