1. Why is Sci Fi
I'm hearing some people calling Dune shitty Star Wars when in fact to be accurate -- since Dune came out first -- Star Wars is improved Dune.
But I'm not sure if I buy the premise because really Star Wars and Dune have two things in common -- there is a desert planet and weird mind powers -- and that's it.
Other than that, to compare them is apples and oranges.
To be SUPER pretentious, they aren't even the same genre! Star Wars is actually Fantasy, not Sci-Fi. Dune is more Sci-Fi although some may argue that straddles the line. I don't. But some people may.
What do I even mean. Well.
Science Fiction is a weird genre because its purpose is to be talking about the ~future~ and the consequences of technology. For instance, Star Trek is Science Fiction because it envisions the future in which technology gets rid of our need for capitalism and chefs and war with each other. And racism is a thing of the past at least on Earth. Star Wars is fantasy because it is about space wizards.
And it is because of that Sci-Fi has a tendency to age poorly because what people in the 60s envision the future is so different than what people in the 80s or today see.
To give Dune credit, I think what they think the future will be is probably more accurate. Star Trek is so wrong to think our stupid Earth will get together to destroy capitalism and racism to explore the stars together. No, we're just gonna break into factions and fight over resources on desert planets just like the big powers do here. I think for that reason is why I would argue Dune is strictly science fiction.
I think if I would have to compare Dune to anything, it would be Lord of the Rings because I would rather watch it than read through a book that has the density of the shortbread cookies I tried to make once. And yes, I love how bad David Lynch's Dune is.
In other news, I've had the urge to rewatch Fullmetal Alchemist because I have been having a lot of dreams lately that I'm a white boy with a prosthetic. I don't do Alchemy though so my dreams are strictly in the Science Fiction category.
