DAY 398 | OPEN | VIDEO
[ Have you ever been treated to heavy breathing on the end of a phone call? Well, that's the sound you're hearing now, except there's a video to go with it, which is mostly occupied by Kirk's sweat-streaked, dirt smudged, scratched up face. He looks more put upon than hurt, and from the looks of the background he's somewhere green and up high. He's tucked tight against what appears to be a tree trunk, running a hand through his hair and flashing his best charming grin under the circumstances. ]

So, probably not the smartest decision ever in my life, but I've found myself up at tree and in need of some assistance. If anyone has suggestions on how to make it out of Sector 6 with...

[ He paused and looked down, moving his lips as his eyes flicked back and forth purposefully. ]

Let's say around four very unhappy raptors. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

[ Hopefully everyone got this without static, but who knows, right? He's hoping for the best. Seems to usually work form. Usually. ]

[She is just going to "distract" a couple of them by killing them. She might feel worse about this if they had any sign they ever wanted to do anything but eat everyone they find and if they weren't just virtual reality generated monsters. Then she phases through the trunk of a tree which seems to confuse the remaining raptors at least for the moment. As they scratch helplessly at the tree, she makes her way toward Kirk.]

[ Well that felt unnecessary, but he wasn't going to argue with results either. He did like being alive and not being chased by angry creatures with teeth.

Kirk has kept moving, not to fast, but far enough that he wouldn't risk attracting attention again. He nods his thanks when he sees Kitty and starts moving again, quiet until he feels they're out of range. ]

Thanks, I owe you one.

[It might have been unnecessary. It was largely precautionary. She also has something of a long history with these things and she knows for as many as she's taken out there have always been plenty more. But without the context and even with it, there's still a lot of blood and death involved.]

Not a problem. Can't let a friend of Pavel's get himself eaten. I mean you'd be alive again tomorrow but you'd always remember getting eaten and that can't be good for a person.

Yeah, I've been through that sort of the thing once already, I don't really want to add another experience to my resume. So thank you for sparing me that.

You...what? [This is news. Who goes through that sort of thing if it's not here?]

[ He glanced at her, somewhat surprised. ]

Chekov hasn't mentioned it to you?

Guess he skipped that part of the life and times of Jim Kirk lecture series. What happened? [She reaches out without warning or explanation to take his hand. A moment later the ground falls out from beneath them, but they remain walking firmly on the air. She spent some considerable time exploring this sector. Not that it doesn't still have plenty of surprises, but it helps to be intangible for them.]

To be fair, it's not a very fun chapter.

[ He would shrug, but he's concentrating on following her out of the sector. ]

The short version? Ship was going to crash into Earth if we didn't get the engines back up, and the only way to do was to kick the reactor back into place. I did that, and got overdosed with radiation.

[ The result of that was fairly obvious from some previous statements. ]

I can see where that would lead to death. I'm less sure where being alive came back into play. [Keeping an eye out for anything that might be following them or trying to jump them.]

Bones - that's how it came into play. Well, him and the blood of an Augmented human.

Bones...is a person? [A person who Chekov always calls, "Dr. McCoy."] Augmented?

Ah, Chekov might have mentioned him as "Leonard McCoy". Bones is his nickname - he's the CMO on the Enterprise.

Yes, Augmented - genetically engineered. They were supposedly the ultimate humans, and they nearly destroyed humanity. They have incredible regenerative abilities, enough that it undid all the damage the radiation had done when I received a straight transfusion.

Oh, yeah, Chekov seems less the nickname-using type. He's mentioned him.

How did they almost [She reaches out, taking his hand firmly as a large, winged creature flies down to attack and sweeps right through them instead. Kitty doesn't miss a beat.] destroy humanity?

He's a pretty straight shooter, but then I think I'm the only who calls McCoy Bones to his face, so...

[ He ducks when she reaches out on instinct, except it went through them? He glances at himself and then her, but doesn't ask the immediate question. Staying alive is more important, and he can grill her about being incorporeal once they were out of the sector. ]

How else? Killing us off. There was a big war, a lot of weapons, a lot of blood. Well before my time, but it was a turning point in human history.

Good point. Why did they want to? [She keeps holding Kirk's hand as long as he doesn't pull it away. They are getting close to the exit. Might as well have her intangible fail safe ready for them in case that inmate comes back or another makes a go for them.]

They believed they were superior. Or at least, that's how Khan always put it, and he was an arrogant bastard to say the least.

But honestly? Without questioning one of them, we might not ever really know. Those that weren't killed were charged with war crimes, and were put into cold sleep.

[ Did anyone really need a good reason to try and wipe out another race? It was disturbingly easy how some people could justify it, he had found.

He's smart enough not to let go of her hand, not until they cross the threshold. No last minute death strokes, thanks very much! ]

[Safe and sound on the other side of the gate she lets his hand go.]

They weren't questioned or they might have been but the records weren't public? [She doesn't expect a good reason because what good reason could there be for that? But it does remind her of mutants. They evolved naturally and not by design, but the humans didn't take it so well. Was there something like that? Were they fighting for their rights and it went too far? Or was it another case of someone with power lording it over others.]

[ He rubs it, because the phasing had felt weird and he had enough nightmares over death and his spirit that making sure he really was corporeal suddenly took precedence. ]

Most likely a mix of the two, depending on who they were. The events are discussed in history, but I suspect a lot of what the governments of Earth know is classified, including the technology and practices used to make the Augmented Humans. That sort of thing has been largely outlawed, in my era.

[ He had understood Khan's anger - not in that he shared the experience, but he could understand why he would hate humans so very much. He would hate someone too who had kidnapped him and altered him so completely without his consent. And then to try and use him as a weapon? Strip his humanity?

It was no wonder they had turned on humanity and tried to destroy them. It didn't make what happened right, none of it, but he couldn't exactly fault Khan's motivations either. ]

[She watches as he rubs his hand.] It's not damaging.

[But then she continues to listen to his story curiously.] What was the goal? The scientists who did the augmenting in the first place or the people over them.
