DAY 398 | OPEN | VIDEO
[ Have you ever been treated to heavy breathing on the end of a phone call? Well, that's the sound you're hearing now, except there's a video to go with it, which is mostly occupied by Kirk's sweat-streaked, dirt smudged, scratched up face. He looks more put upon than hurt, and from the looks of the background he's somewhere green and up high. He's tucked tight against what appears to be a tree trunk, running a hand through his hair and flashing his best charming grin under the circumstances. ]

So, probably not the smartest decision ever in my life, but I've found myself up at tree and in need of some assistance. If anyone has suggestions on how to make it out of Sector 6 with...

[ He paused and looked down, moving his lips as his eyes flicked back and forth purposefully. ]

Let's say around four very unhappy raptors. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

[ Hopefully everyone got this without static, but who knows, right? He's hoping for the best. Seems to usually work form. Usually. ]

[He figured trouble was inevitable, but he'd held out some hope that a slightly older Kirk would be a wiser and less reckless Kirk.]

Ah... then you have two options. One, you can ask someone for help. [Note that Chekov is not offering his help. He's a smart kid, he knows better than to tangle with raptors.] Or two, you can wait until they become bored and go away.

[Or three, Kirk can do something stupid and get eaten. Chekov isn't going to offer this as an option because he'd be devastated if that happened and he hadn't done anything to prevent it.]

[ He had not been reckless! In fact he came up with a plan on the fly and got up a tree. But honestly, since when did any of his plans go perfectly straight? Never? And he had only gone a little bit into Sector 6. To begin with, anyways. ]

Are you going to keep me company until either of those two things happen, Pavel?

[ Your captain is giving you a 'I see what you didn't say there' look, sir. ]

[No. No. When you're a magnet for trouble and danger, you do not go into Sector 6, not even a little. Not even out of curiosity. Not even if you're Kirk and you have an uncanny habit of landing on your feet.]

Unless you end this transmission, yes, I am. [Okay, yeah, so Chekov's worried even if he isn't alarmed. He knows Kirk will get out of this in his usual Kirk way, but the worry is totally warranted.] I think that you're less likely to do reckless things in my company.

[ You could say that means he shouldn't go down to any planet, ever, but he still does. Look, he didn't get into his line of work to play it safe, though heaven knows Bones and Spock and others would appreciate if he did.

But can tell you care. Very sweet, Pavel, he appreciates it. ]

Would your Russian grandmother happen to have any advice for this situation?

[The crew's collective blood pressure would be much lower if Kirk didn't go down to any planets. Impractical and not in the spirit of boldly going, but less stressful by far.]

Do you know the Russian saying, "Even though there is nothing to eat, life is fun"?

[ It wasn't just planets! And it didn't happen all the time, only some of the time, and most of the time it was not his fault! Their blood pressure wouldn't be any lower if he wasn't there, his own would be higher and then Bones would have conniptions and everyone would suffer. ]

Is that your way of telling me to look on the bright side, Pavel?

[Excuses!]

Yes.

Also, you can try convincing the raptors of that. Maybe they can be persuaded to not eat you.

[ Facts of the matter! ]

To bad I forgot my goat at home to barter with. I'm sure your grandmother would be ashamed of me.

She would only be ashamed if you survived this incident without learning anything.

Well, I can't go making your grandmother ashamed of me. That just seems like bad luck waiting to happen.

Please avoid making her ashamed of you by learning, not by not surviving.

And leave you alone here again? I don't think so, Pavel. I would be a terrible captain, if I did that.

I know that you wouldn't do that intentionally.

[That gives him a lot of Feelings that he doesn't know how to interpret or what to do with. Or course Kirk wouldn't leave Chekov behind on purpose--not in any sense--but he has. More than once.`

Chekov pushes those thoughts back, but he's too expressive to mask the fact that he's thinking too hard about something.]

Would you like me to call Kitty? She would be better at rescuing you than I would be.

[ Well, he hasn't left him on purpose, and if he does go back from this place he plans on taking Chekov with him. He's not going to let him be here alone. He wants him home, on the Enterprise, with him. ]

No, no, let's hold back on her for a bit. She scares me a little - just a bit more than the raptors.

[There are all sorts of potential temporal disasters associated with this particular Chekov going to the ship that this particular Kirk calls home since there's some time between them, but Chekov appreciates the thought regardless.]

She isn't that frightening, but yes, okay, if you prefer the dinosaurs...

[ Well, you get his general sentiment, all right?

But time to focus on something else. ]

Not that frightening, huh? You spend a lot of time around her to know that?

[ Kirk thinks he has a scent, and it's a pleasant distraction from sharp teeth. ]

[It is the thought that counts!]

Yes, I do. [Said like a true ingenue with no inkling that Kirk might be getting at something (even though there's definitely something to get at; there's been a lot of intense snuggling).] I've had more intimidating friends.

[ Kirk is honing in on this, and he has to say, he feels a sudden surge of pride for his little Russian. Good on you Chekov. ]

Intimidating, but not intimate?

[Someday Kirk will need to hear about Chekov's girlfriend in Polychromatic. He would be so proud.

The wordplay makes him pause. Now he thinks he knows where Kirk's going here.]

I have not had many more intimate friends, no.

[ He really would. He wants only good things for his cute little Russian, and it is only right that someone else appreciate his adorableness.

But, he won't tease you to much, not today, nice a distraction as it was. ]

Well, I'm glad you've found at least one here. You'll have to properly introduce me to her sometime.

On a day when you haven't been chased into a tree by dinosaurs, yes.

Have you made a plan to escape them yet? [Because if Kirk hasn't and he isn't going to call someone in for a rescue, Chekov is going to have to do something. No one wants that.]

I think a few people are on the way, now it's just a waiting game. Eventually that should work in my favor - I don't think the raptors will want to waste a lot more time or energy on a single bit of prey.

[ He's just hoping here, he has no idea what kind of engineering and breeding these things might have. ]

Ah, good. If no one reaches you, then you can bore them into leaving. [Not actually sarcasm. That's a solid plan. Even super-raptors would get bored, right?] I promise that they will get tired of waiting to eat you before I get tired of talking to you to make sure that you're still alive.

You can tell me more about this lady-friend of yours while we wait.

That is a gift of mine.

[He knows he doesn't, don't avoid sarcasm to spare his feelings.]

What do you know already? [Why does he feel like anything he says can and will be used against him?]
