[Day 397][Video|Action|Open]
[If you are in Sector 4 near the gardening plots, you might have heard the sound of bees buzzing along without a care near their hive, but it wouldn't last. There would be a shout of surprise and then another that was a curse of pain, and footsteps stumbling along. Look in the right direction and you'd see a young man with a mess of long hair flinging his arms around as he fought off the bees he'd unintentionally angered by waking up right next to their hive and knocking into it when he woke up, confused and disoriented, sending several of its inhabitants into a tizzy.]

Damned little demons!

[He's even more confused as to why the stings of the bees hurt--or why he can't simply use his speed to outrun them--but his main priority will be getting away from them and then trying to get some answers. But in his hurry he maybe tramples over some of the nearby gardening plots and doesn't see the people who might be nearby while he's trying to shake the enraged insects off his trail and out of his hair.

He barely notices the device on his head before he grabs it and swings it at them, like a weapon that he doesn't have. Public Video turns on just in time to see him trip over his own two feet while whipping his hair out of his face to see the enemy. The device drops to the ground and he scrambles to his feet, body tense, slit pupils contracted and teeth pulled into a near snarl. It might almost look like he's been in a real fight.]

How many of you are there?!

How fortuitous for those who would enjoy such a place. [Perhaps had it been just a month previous, he too would have found this place free and welcoming in comparison to where he'd been before. But when he had finally been given freedom--or the closest to such a thing as he could grasp--to be brought here was more a slap in the face than salvation.

But, as needs must, A'oran pushes down the anger and tries to sound as genial as he can.]

So the communicators are to keep ourselves amused rather than intruding on their leisure time? Do people here no longer make social calls in person? [Not unlike what he had learned of the world he had awakened to.]

I sense some sarcasm when you say that. Good. You'll fit right in.

[And he's serious. Even if he's "well-adjusted" to being there, he doesn't have to like it]

Probably more so than in other places. You run into people in the dome, swing by apartments. There are a lot of restaurants and other places to meet.

[A'oran is looking through the "map" again, brow furrowing.] Yes I see that there are a great deal of places to eat. One would think they wanted us fat and sedate to be plying the inmates with this much...

[He pauses. Because he just found the part of the map with a building called the "Blood Shack." Finally he finishes with]...variety.

[He raises an eyebrow at the fact that A'oran paused in the middle of his sentence]

See something interesting on there?

[He can't see that A'oran found the building labeled "Blood Shack"]

[A'oran recognizes his mistake too late. He continues to appear nonchalant as much as he can.] Some of these...establishments have very unsettling names, is all. Someone must have a dark humor.

Dark humor? Which one?

[He runs through the list of restaurants in his head until he settles on what is kind of a restaurant]

The Blood Shack? We have had vampires here. Don't know if we still do, but it is for them.

[He has no concern about vampires being there. That was - after all - the reason for the Blood Shack]

Vampires. Roaming freely among the prisoners. [The casual stance of his body is more affected, less natural.] Wonder that anyone is left alive. Do the wardens keep the separated now?

Well, the vampires are prisoners as well. I am not aware that they are separated. They haven't been before.

The reason for the blood shack is to limit vampires going after people simply because they are hungry.

[Lyle is getting the impression he either has a problem with vampires or there is something else]

[Vampires don't care about whether it's the hunger or their own need to slaughter. It makes little difference to them. But A'oran doesn't say that out loud because this man seems to have little concern about monsters in their midst. Instead he asks a question.]

Is that something that's happened here before?

[Lyle is making assumptions. Clearly he is not a vampire. Besides, he hasn't seen a vampire going out just to kill]

Which part: feeding on others because they are hungry or going after people?

[It is a boon that most people don't look closely enough at his eyes to notice that the pupils aren't like that of a human. Particularly as his eyes are not the bold, bloody red of a Fallen. But he doesn't know this man and doesn't know how observant he is or isn't, so he looks down, as if continuing his inspection of the device. Less direct eye contact means less scrutiny. Hopefully.]

I would consider both, truly. Even if they don't normally attack, a vampire is never not dangerous to those around it.

[Even if Lyle had noticed his eyes, he wouldn't have made assumptions. There were so many people here beyond "normal" that you stopped focusing on things that were only slightly off. If someone had a hand growing out of their forehead, that would have still gotten his attention. Someone's eyes? Not really]

I believe before the Blood Shack was established, we did have an issue with a vampire. However, I think it was more they were getting weak from not eating. I don't know what people do privately, but there hasn't been anyone asking any questions with regard to eating that I know of.

That's not to say vampires haven't attacked people. But we've had people who aren't vampires attack others too so it could be anyone.

It seems that you know a fair amount about vampires.

[There was little comfort in that assurance. A'oran knew well enough what vampires were capable of, knew that trusting them was impossible.]

Everyone knows of vampires. [He says it easily because it's true.] They are rather difficult to overlook, what with killing and turning people as they like.

And you are going to assume that all of them are like that?

[He's not too concerned with vampires even after living in a place he knows they exist and is rather surprised at how dead set the other is against them]

I would say it's better to be aware and ready than to assume they aren't, although I'm sure statistically some are less bloodthirsty than others.

[Of course that would include those like himself seeing as humans don't see any difference at all between Fallen and Sangarde.]

If they are indeed "good" vampires, the question would stand as to why they've been imprisoned here. Being a vampire doesn't make you a criminal, after all.

Yes, it is good to be aware of what is going on around you. If you aren't, something can definitely happen. We've had some odd things happen here.

The question could also be asked why any of us were. Some are here for serious crimes, others for something as simple as jaywalk. Even things we haven't done yet. There is no reasoning here. If you had no choice but to break a law in order to save someone's life, they only see the bad.

[Most of what he says makes some sense, but A'oran still isn't sure which of them is more naive. To believe that a "vampire" isn't fully capable of tearing out a citizen's throat on a whim is to put everyone in danger. But this man seems so casual in his words, as if there is nothing to fear here despite the knowledge. He doesn't appear a fool, and yet...]

I'm not so mindless as to believe every man serving a life sentence truly deserves his fate, but I find myself doubting that those here are as innocent as you may claim. "Jaywalking" sounds dreadful.

[Oh, he's aware they can do that. He's also aware almost everyone in the dome has the potential to be dangerous. He can't simply condemn one group when others are just as bad]

Suit yourself. Everyone is guilty of something, I am aware of that. The point is though, someone who has killed should not be given the same fate as someone who stole a candy bar or cheated on a test.

[At the comment about jaywalking, he's not sure if the other is serious. Maybe he truly didn't know what it was?]

Jaywalking is where you cross the street not in a designated crossing zone. If a police officer were picky, he could give you a citation for being a foot outside of this area.

[A'oran wonders if he's jesting with him. "Crossing zones?" From what he's seen of the future, barely anyone follows those little white lines and yet police officers are not swarming the areas arresting the masses.]

I don't know whether you are speaking honestly or trying to play on my ignorance of your laws.

I don't know about where you are from, but that is a law where I am from. Very few people follow it and unless its a dangerous intersection or someone has a quota of tickets to meet, no one really says anything. However, because it is a law that is in the books for a lot of people, it is a reason that the wardens can use to bring you here, even if police in your world don't bother with it.
